Activision believes GTA 6 could increase Call of Duty’s audience rather than simply take players away. Chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl says the game may bring dormant Xbox and PlayStation owners back to their consoles, raise overall gaming attention and expose more people to Call of Duty. That is a strategic forecast—not evidence that either game will sell better after launch.

Why Activision thinks GTA 6 could lift Call of Duty

Bahl’s argument is based on audience expansion. A major release can prompt people who have stopped using their consoles to turn them on again, visit their dashboards and start playing. Once those players are active, Activision expects Call of Duty to gain additional visibility from the larger conversation around games.

“more people coming in to the dashboards, more people taking the dust off their Xbox or PlayStation and starting to play again, and loading up that experience is going to be more eyeballs for us, overall.”

— Tyler Bahl, quoted by VGC

He made the point while discussing the relative size of the two releases, saying: “Well, no offense to Zelda, but I think, you know, [GTA 6 and Modern Warfare 4] are the two biggest games of the year.”

Bahl also told Dexerto that broader attention can benefit multiple publishers: “If more people are talking about games, if there’s more press around it, that’s going to be good for everybody, not just us.”

Call of Duty’s claimed advantage is playing with friends

Activision’s retention theory depends on Call of Duty being more than a one-off purchase. Bahl described its durable strength as “the community and the social experience” of playing with friends. He summarized the research behind that view as: “It’s actually ‘my friends are there’, right? ‘I’m able to spend time with my friends.’”

That network spans PC, Xbox and PlayStation, with VGC also citing newly supported Switch 2 play. If a friend group keeps returning to the same multiplayer game, one person’s interest in GTA 6 does not automatically end the group’s Call of Duty sessions.

Modern Warfare 4 is launching before GTA 6

The apparent contradiction is in the calendar. VGC and Dexerto report that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026, while GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026. Call of Duty therefore arrives just under a month earlier and is outside the usual November release window associated with the series.

Game Reported release date Position in the launch calendar
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 October 23, 2026 Releases first
GTA 6 November 19, 2026 Arrives roughly four weeks later

That timing is a practical hedge even if Activision’s public message is optimistic. GTA BOOM characterized the situation as a tension between a “rising tide” argument and the industry’s revealed preference to schedule ahead of GTA 6’s launch. Activision is not putting Modern Warfare 4 directly on the same day, when players would face the sharpest choice over which game to buy and play first.

The available numbers show interest, not results

Current indicators explain why Activision is confident, but they do not establish what will happen after launch.

Modern Warfare 4 purchase intent 15% Among the U.S. console and PC player base, measured by Circana in August 2026
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake purchase intent 10.4% Same broad U.S. console and PC base and Circana measurement
Monthly Call of Duty players About 40 million in 2024; mid-20 millions in 2026 Ampere figures reported by VGC; post-July 2025 Modern Warfare 2 and 3 data is missing, as is Black Ops 6 data after July 2026

The purchase-intent figures indicate strong pre-release awareness for Modern Warfare 4, but intent is not a sale, and neither measure captures how many hours players will devote to GTA 6. The player-count trend also needs its stated data gaps; it should not be treated as a complete year-to-year accounting of every Call of Duty title.

Why GTA 6 could still cannibalize Call of Duty

Players have limited time and launch budgets

The counterargument is straightforward: people can own both games and still have less time for one of them. GTA 6’s launch period could absorb evenings, weekends and discretionary spending that might otherwise go to Call of Duty’s battle passes, expansions or other live-service purchases. GTA BOOM identified this finite-time and finite-money problem as the main risk to Activision’s theory.

GTA 6’s future online mode is the bigger long-term test

A story-focused launch creates more room for the two games to coexist than a simultaneous competitive multiplayer release would. The longer-term question is GTA 6’s planned online mode. If it develops into a persistent social and competitive destination, it could compete more directly for the friend-group time that Bahl describes as Call of Duty’s core advantage. The timing and final shape of that online offering remain subject to change.

Can players play both around the same launch window?

Yes. The reported schedule gives players nearly a month to start Modern Warfare 4 before GTA 6 arrives. A player who prioritizes Call of Duty’s multiplayer with friends can establish that routine in October, then add GTA 6 in November. The more difficult case is a player with limited free time who wants to finish GTA 6’s launch content immediately; that person may temporarily reduce Call of Duty sessions even if the games remain installed.

Cross-platform groups also matter. Because Call of Duty supports PC, Xbox, PlayStation and, according to VGC, Switch 2, a friend network can keep a regular multiplayer schedule while individual members explore GTA 6 separately. That is the specific behavior Activision is counting on, not a guarantee that every player will divide time evenly.

What would prove or disprove Activision’s forecast?

  • Audience expansion: rising active-console engagement and stable or improving Call of Duty participation after November 19 would support Bahl’s view.
  • Launch cannibalization: a sharp fall in Call of Duty playtime, spending or retention while GTA 6 dominates attention would support the opposing case.
  • Social resilience: continued group play across platforms would show whether the friend-network advantage survives a major competing release.
  • Long-term competition: the eventual performance and timing of GTA 6’s online mode will matter more than its initial story-led launch for sustained multiplayer overlap.

Those are outcomes to measure after release, not conclusions that can be drawn from Bahl’s interview. Release dates and platform plans can also change before October and November 2026.

The takeaway

Activision is betting that GTA 6 will enlarge the active console audience and create more gaming attention, while Call of Duty keeps players through established friend groups. Moving Modern Warfare 4 to October shows that the company is also limiting direct launch-day exposure to GTA 6. Whether the strategy works will depend on the balance between newly reactivated players and the finite hours that GTA 6 captures.
