Activision has confirmed that a future Call of Duty game will launch a completely new sub-franchise, with development groundwork already underway. The announcement, made on October 15, 2026, does not identify the game’s name, setting, developer, release year or platforms. Those omissions are driving widespread fan speculation, but reports of a 2027 launch, modern-era combat and martial-arts mechanics remain unconfirmed.
What Activision actually confirmed
Tyler Bahl, Activision’s chief marketing officer, told The Game Business: “We’ve already stated that a future title is going to be a new sub-franchise and we’ve already laid the groundwork.” Insider Gaming separately reported that work has started on a title intended to kick-start a new branch of the series.
That is the full scope of the confirmation. Activision has not announced a formal title, story setting, lead studio, launch window or supported hardware. Gaming Route also recorded that none of those specifics has been supplied publicly.

Why Activision is opening another branch
Bahl said players did not want another run of back-to-back sequels, even when a new entry changed its time period or features. “It was not something that our community was looking for. They wanted something fresh,” he said.

The recent sequence helps explain the decision: Modern Warfare 2 released in 2022, Modern Warfare 3 in 2023, Black Ops 6 in 2024 and Black Ops 7 in 2025. The official Black Ops 7 announcement described it as the first consecutive release within that sub-franchise, underscoring how quickly the annual schedule had returned to the same established labels.
The change also comes as Activision evaluates engagement and reception. The Game Business, citing Ampere Analysis, reported roughly 40 million monthly players in 2024 and mid-20 millions in 2026. The later figure has an important limitation: Ampere’s available data did not include Modern Warfare 2 or Modern Warfare 3 after July 2025, nor Black Ops 6 after July 2026.

The same report said Black Ops 7 opened about 50% lower in Europe than the previous year’s title and ranked No. 5 in the United States at year-end, which it described as the franchise’s lowest U.S. ranking since 2008’s World at War. These figures provide context for the push to innovate, but they do not by themselves establish why any individual player chose not to buy the game.
What fans are speculating about
Reports have connected the unnamed project with a possible 2027 release, a modern-era setting and a greater emphasis on martial arts or hand-to-hand combat. Those details have not been confirmed by Activision. They should be treated as reported possibilities rather than announced features.

Fan posts and leak claims are not part of the official reveal. Until Activision identifies the project, there is no reliable basis for stating whether it will be a grounded military shooter, a historical game, a futuristic entry or something built around a different combat system.
Modern Warfare 4 is the immediate release
The next publicly identified game is Modern Warfare 4, reported for October 23, 2026. The Game Business lists versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

Bahl described Modern Warfare 4 as a return to a grounded military shooter. He also said Activision is judging the game primarily by whether fans enjoy it rather than by a predetermined sales target.

Does this mean Modern Warfare and Black Ops are ending?
No. Activision has not said that either established sub-franchise is being retired. Confirming a separate future branch indicates an expansion of the portfolio, not a cancellation of Modern Warfare or Black Ops. The company can continue those series while using a new identity to vary settings, mechanics and release patterns.
Bahl acknowledged that the company was dissatisfied with aspects of the previous year’s game and had heard player criticism “loud and clear.” He added: “Where we go with future games, we have to innovate.” That language supports a design and scheduling shift, but it is not a promise that every future release will depart from the existing series.
What information would turn speculation into an announcement?
The next meaningful update would need to establish several separate facts:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The official name and whether it is a standalone game or the first of a numbered line.
- The lead developer and the studios contributing to production.
- The historical or fictional setting and the game’s central premise.
- Confirmed mechanics, including whether hand-to-hand combat is actually part of the design.
- A release year, launch date and platform list.
Until those details arrive, the defensible description is simple: Activision has begun work on a future Call of Duty sub-franchise, but the game itself remains unnamed and largely undefined in public information.
