An active HDMI cable has built-in electronics that help carry a signal along the cable. It is usually chosen for a longer or higher-bandwidth connection, but “active” alone does not tell you what formats the cable supports. Check its HDMI cable category and specifications, connect its marked Source end to the transmitting device and Sink end to the receiving device, and confirm whether it needs HDMI Cable Power or a separate power connection.

What makes an HDMI cable active?

“Active” describes how the cable assembly handles the signal: it contains active circuitry that conditions, amplifies, or otherwise processes the signal path. It does not mean the cable must use optical fiber. An active optical HDMI cable is one type of active cable, not a synonym for all active HDMI cables. HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) includes active optical cable assemblies among the permitted cable types, alongside wire, passive, and converter assemblies in its HDMI 2.2 Specification Overview.

The practical distinction is between the cable’s operation and its performance category. Active versus passive describes construction and operation; the HDMI category and the particular model’s specifications describe supported performance.

Does an active cable mean HDMI 2.1 or a particular speed?

No. “Active” is not a speed tier or a guarantee of compatibility with a particular resolution, refresh rate, HDR format, or audio feature. HDMI LA’s current overview lists Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable at up to 48 Gbps and Ultra96 HDMI Cable at up to 96 Gbps. Those are category bandwidth figures, not a claim that every active cable can reach either rate. Check the exact cable’s category and specifications against the formats your devices need.

  • Long Distance Signal Lossless Transmission -- Fiber optic hdmi 2.1 cable can achieve lossless transmission, the longest transmission distance of up to 300m. Copper hdmi cord can't reach 18Gbps for more than 50 feet, while fiber hdmi cables can reach and without signal loss.
  • High Quality Active HDMI Cable -- The long hdmi cable feature gold-plated connectors to prevent oxidation and are protected by a zinc alloy housing. Withstands over 20,000+ bending cycles.
  • Unidirectional Transmission -- Fiber optic hdmi cable is one-directional transmission. The plugs at each end are marked "SOURCE" and "DISPLAY". The "SOURCE" plug connects signal source devices such as TV Box, PS5, PS4, PS3, Blu-ray Players, Xbox Series, Laptop etc. The "DISPLAY" plug connects display end devices such as TV, Displays, Projector, Moniter etc. Please make sure you plug in each end correctly, you will not get signal from the device.

When bandwidth matters, look for the official category and its certification label. HDMI LA says products marketed under the Ultra High Speed or Ultra96 designation must pass certification tests and display the corresponding label. Certification supports the category claim; it does not establish which way to connect the cable or whether its power requirements suit your setup. See HDMI LA’s HDMI Cables – Different Cable Types guidance and HDMI 2.2 Specification Overview.

Which end goes into the TV or display?

Active HDMI cables are directional. Connect the end marked Source to the device sending the signal, such as a media player, console, or computer. Connect the end marked Sink to the receiving device, such as a TV, monitor, or receiver. Check the labels before routing the cable through a wall, conduit, or furniture.

HDMI LA says a reversed cable will not cause damage, but the connection will not work. If there is no picture after installation, check the Source/Sink direction first. The official direction and power guidance is on HDMI LA’s HDMI Cable Power page.

Does an active HDMI cable need power?

Power needs depend on the cable and the source. Some cables support HDMI Cable Power, which draws power through the HDMI connection; both the cable and the source must support the feature. HDMI LA says HDMI Cable Power can draw up to 300 mA from the source’s 5V supply. The page does not state a publication year for that figure.

Some cables instead provide a separate power connector, often intended for a USB power lead. HDMI LA says such a cable can work with an HDMI device whose source does not support HDMI Cable Power if its separate power connection is attached. Check the cable and source documentation rather than assuming a port supplies HDMI Cable Power. The HDMI Cable Power guidance explains the feature and separate-power arrangement.

How long can an active HDMI cable be?

There is no single maximum length that applies to all active HDMI cables. HDMI LA says usable length depends on factors such as cable type and construction. Choose a specific model documented for the length of your run and the format you need; do not infer a maximum from the word “active” or from a category bandwidth figure. The HDMI cable types guidance discusses cable types and length considerations.

  • Supports HDR: HDR is an acronym for High Dynamic Range. TVs with HDR show a better, more realistic image with more contrast, brightness, and colors than ever before. HDR significantly expands contrast ratio and color accuracy. Contrast ratio is related to how bright or dark a screen is and color accuracy is how closely the colors on the screen match colors in real life. Bright images seem brighter, with more depth.

What should you check before buying or installing one?

  • Run length: Confirm the exact model is specified for the distance you need.
  • Connectors: Check that both ends match the source and display or receiver.
  • Required formats: Verify support for your resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio needs in the cable’s specifications.
  • Category and certification: Match the official cable category to the required bandwidth, and look for the relevant certification label when the category claim matters.
  • Direction: Identify Source and Sink before routing the cable.
  • Power: Confirm whether both source and cable support HDMI Cable Power or whether the cable needs its separate power connector.
  • Routing: Account for bends and installation constraints; for a difficult or permanent run, consider consulting a professional AV installer.

If the connection does not work

  1. Check direction: Source must connect to the signal-generating device and Sink to the receiving device.
  2. Check power: If the source does not support HDMI Cable Power, attach the cable’s separate power connector if it has one and its documentation requires it.
  3. Check format support: Compare the cable’s stated category and model specifications with the format selected on your devices.
  4. Check the run: Make sure the cable is being used within its documented length and installation conditions.
