An Active Directory forest is the top-level logical structure in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). It contains one or more domains that share directory-wide components—including a schema, configuration, and global catalog—and have automatic two-way transitive trusts between them.

What an Active Directory forest contains

Microsoft defines a forest as one or more AD DS domains sharing a common logical structure, directory schema, directory configuration, and global catalog. The schema defines directory object classes and attributes; the configuration includes site and replication information; and the global catalog supports forest-wide searches. These shared components make a forest broader than a collection of unrelated domains. Microsoft Learn: Understanding the Active Directory Logical Model

At the protocol level, a forest contains one schema naming context, one configuration naming context, and one or more domain naming contexts. It may also contain application naming contexts. These are directory partitions, or naming contexts—not ordinary parent-child object relationships across the boundaries between them. Microsoft Open Specifications: MS-ADTS

How a forest differs from a domain or domain tree

Concept Scope and contents Namespace Trust
Forest The top-level logical AD DS structure; includes one or more domains and shared directory-wide components. Can contain one or more domain trees; their namespaces do not have to be contiguous. Domains in the same forest have automatic two-way transitive trusts.
Domain A directory partition and domain-level administrative unit for objects such as users, groups, and computers. Its partition replicates among domain controllers. Has a domain name within a tree or forest. Participates in the automatic transitive trusts linking domains in its forest.
Domain tree A hierarchy of domains within a forest. Uses a contiguous namespace: child domain names extend the parent domain name. Domains in the same forest are linked through automatic transitive trusts.

Microsoft describes the domain as a directory partition that supports identity and authentication and replicates among domain controllers. A domain tree, by contrast, describes how domain names form a continuous hierarchy. A forest is the larger structure that can contain one tree or several. What the forest security boundary means

Microsoft’s MS-NRPC glossary calls the forest the security and administrative boundary for objects in its member domains. It describes a domain as an administrative boundary for managing objects such as users, groups, and computers. This terminology identifies the scope of the forest; it does not mean that simply creating a forest makes every deployment secure by default. Microsoft Open Specifications: MS-NRPC Glossary

How to picture the hierarchy

Think of the forest as the overall AD DS environment, a domain as one directory partition and administrative area within it, and a domain tree as the naming hierarchy connecting domains. One forest may have a single domain, or it may group multiple domains and even multiple namespace trees under the same forest-wide structure and trust relationships.

Microsoft’s logical-model documentation applies to Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025; it was last updated May 12, 2025. Microsoft Learn documentation
