Acoustic and optical black holes are laboratory analogues, not collapsed stars. An acoustic analogue uses sound waves in a moving fluid or condensate; an optical analogue uses light interacting with a moving refractive-index disturbance in a dielectric. Each arrangement creates a horizon-like boundary for its waves, allowing researchers to test selected black-hole physics under controlled conditions.
The key difference is therefore the wave and the medium: sound is carried by flowing matter in the acoustic system, while light is governed by a changing optical environment in the optical system. Results from either platform describe that analogue system; they do not, by themselves, prove that Hawking radiation has been detected from an astronomical black hole.

| Wave being studied | Sound or phononic disturbances | Light |
| Physical medium | A moving fluid or condensate | A dielectric medium with a refractive-index perturbation |
| How the horizon is formed | The flow crosses the relevant sound-propagation speed | A refractive-index change alters light propagation and can create a moving optical horizon |
| Typical laboratory platform | A Bose–Einstein condensate is one established platform | Fibre-optical and other dielectric systems |
| Example reported evidence | Stationary spontaneous Hawking radiation and time evolution of an analogue black hole in a condensate experiment | Stimulated Hawking-radiation processes and optical backreaction in fibre optics |
| What the evidence describes | Wave behaviour in an acoustic analogue | Wave behaviour in an optical analogue |

An astrophysical black hole is a region of spacetime produced by extreme gravity. Once matter or light crosses its event horizon, it cannot return to the outside universe under the usual description of general relativity. A laboratory analogue does not create that gravitational spacetime or compress matter into a stellar remnant.

Instead, researchers arrange a medium so that a particular class of waves encounters a one-way boundary. The wave equation in that medium can share mathematical features with wave propagation near a gravitational horizon. That similarity lets an experiment examine questions such as how modes split near a horizon, how positive- and negative-frequency components are related, and how radiation-like signals emerge.
Only the selected wave physics is reproduced. The analogue may lack gravity, an astrophysical mass, a true spacetime event horizon, and the full range of interactions present around a cosmic black hole. A successful analogue measurement is consequently evidence about the modelled mechanism in that medium, not a miniature astronomical black hole.
How an acoustic black-hole analogue works
Sound is carried by moving matter
In an acoustic system, sound is a disturbance in a material medium. The medium may be an ordinary fluid or an ultracold condensate. Sound propagates relative to that medium, while the medium itself has a flow speed. A sound pulse travelling against the flow can be swept downstream if the flow becomes sufficiently fast.

Suppose a region has a subsonic flow, where sound can still travel upstream, next to a region whose flow is faster than the relevant sound-propagation speed. At the transition, upstream-moving sound can no longer cross back out of the faster-flowing region. This boundary is an acoustic horizon, often called a “dumb hole” because it traps sound rather than light.
The important comparison is local: the flow speed must be assessed against the sound speed for the medium and experimental state. The horizon is not a solid wall. Sound waves still exist on both sides, but their possible paths are altered by the flow, producing the one-way behaviour that makes the analogy useful.
Why condensates are useful
A Bose–Einstein condensate provides a highly controllable quantum fluid. Researchers can shape its density and flow, prepare a long-lived configuration, and measure correlated excitations. That control makes it possible to study both the creation of an analogue horizon and changes in the emitted signal over time.

A condensate experiment therefore tests phononic modes in a flowing quantum medium. It does not test photons escaping from a gravitational horizon. The condensate’s microscopic physics, finite size and dispersion remain part of the interpretation.
How an optical black-hole analogue works
Light responds to a refractive-index disturbance
In an optical analogue, the medium is dielectric: light travels through material whose refractive index determines how its modes propagate. A deliberately produced refractive-index perturbation can move through the medium or otherwise form the optical equivalent of a moving boundary.
In the appropriate reference frame, the perturbation can separate regions in which light modes can and cannot overtake the disturbance. That separation functions as an optical analogue horizon. The relevant “flow” is not bulk liquid moving past the light; it is the effective propagation environment created by the refractive-index change.
Fibre optics and controlled pulses
Fibre-optical experiments can launch intense pulses that modify the fibre’s optical properties and create a travelling perturbation. Probe fields then interact with that disturbance. The experiment records changes in optical frequencies, correlations or output fields that are interpreted using the analogue-horizon model.
Why dispersion matters especially in optics
Real dielectrics are dispersive: different optical frequencies propagate differently. The optical horizon is therefore frequency-dependent, and the measured spectrum cannot be interpreted as if the medium were perfectly nondispersive. Yuval Rosenberg’s 2020 review discusses the roles of classical fields, negative frequencies, regular optics and dispersion when evaluating optical black-hole experiments.
This does not make the optical analogy invalid. It means that a claim must specify which modes were measured, how the refractive-index perturbation was generated, and how the observed signal was separated from ordinary nonlinear-optical effects.

The most important differences
Different waves, different meanings of “escape”
In the acoustic case, “escape” means a sound disturbance travelling against the material flow and crossing the acoustic horizon. In the optical case, it means a light mode overtaking or crossing a moving refractive-index feature. Neither statement means that matter or light is being trapped by astronomical gravity.
Different media and control parameters
Acoustic experiments tune flow velocity, density and sound speed. Optical experiments tune the refractive-index profile, pulse velocity, optical frequency and material dispersion. These parameters determine where a horizon appears and which modes can be measured.
Different experimental signatures
Condensate studies can measure phonon populations and correlations in the quantum fluid. Fibre experiments measure optical fields and their frequency components. A signal that is persuasive in one platform cannot simply be transferred to the other without accounting for the platform’s noise, mode structure and dispersion.

Both systems address horizon-related wave behaviour. They are complementary tools rather than interchangeable versions of one apparatus. An acoustic result can support the study of horizon physics without confirming every detail of an optical model, and an optical result does not automatically validate a condensate interpretation.
What experiments have actually reported
Spontaneous radiation in a condensate analogue
A Nature Physics paper published in 2020 reported observation of stationary spontaneous Hawking radiation and the time evolution of an analogue black hole using a Bose–Einstein condensate. In this context, “spontaneous” refers to radiation-like phononic excitations arising from the quantum analogue system rather than being driven by an externally injected probe in the same way as a stimulated measurement.
The result is evidence that the configured condensate produced the predicted type of analogue signal under the experiment’s conditions. It is not an observation of particles emitted by an astrophysical event horizon.

Stimulated radiation and backreaction in fibre optics
A Nature paper published on 1 July 2026 reported experimental and theoretical evidence concerning stimulated Hawking radiation in a fibre-optical analogue. It also examined the optical field’s reaction back onto the process, known as backreaction.
“Stimulated” means that an input field helps drive the process, making the resulting response easier to measure than an entirely spontaneous signal. Backreaction matters because the generated optical field can alter the conditions that produced it; treating the analogue horizon as perfectly fixed would omit that feedback.
The paper’s result remains an optical-analogue measurement. It does not constitute an astronomical detection. The article states: “Hawking radiation has never been observed in astronomy, only in laboratory analogues.”
What these results establish—and what they do not
They establish behaviour in engineered media
- Researchers can create horizon-like conditions for sound or light in a laboratory.
- The resulting wave modes can show radiation-like behaviour predicted by analogue models.
- Different platforms can expose different parts of the problem, including time evolution, stimulation and backreaction.
- Laboratory controls allow parameters and readouts that are inaccessible around an actual cosmic black hole.
They do not establish an astronomical observation
- No analogue experiment creates the gravitational field of a collapsed star.
- A laboratory horizon is defined for selected waves in a selected medium, not for every form of matter and radiation in spacetime.
- Analogue dispersion, boundaries, losses and nonlinearities can influence the measured spectrum.
- A signal in an analogue medium cannot by itself prove that Hawking radiation has been detected from an astrophysical black hole.
The distinction is not a dismissal of analogue gravity. It is the condition for stating the result accurately: the experiment tests a transferable mechanism or mathematical prediction within a deliberately designed physical system.
How to evaluate a claim about “Hawking radiation”
- Identify the platform. Is the experiment using a moving fluid, a condensate, a fibre or another dielectric? The medium determines which wave is involved.
- Identify the horizon mechanism. Look for the flow crossing the sound speed in an acoustic setup, or the moving refractive-index perturbation in an optical setup.
- Separate spontaneous from stimulated measurements. A driven probe can make a response measurable but is not the same as observing an unprompted signal.
- Check the mode analysis. Optical negative-frequency components, material dispersion and ordinary nonlinear processes must be accounted for; condensate measurements likewise require a model of phonon modes and correlations.
- Read the claim at the correct level. “Observed in an analogue” is narrower and more accurate than “detected from a black hole.”
- Check the date and source. Experimental interpretations are active research. The 2020 condensate report and the 1 July 2026 fibre-optical report address different platforms and processes.
Which analogue is useful for which question?
Choose an acoustic analogue when the question concerns flowing quantum fluids
Acoustic systems are suited to questions about phonons, flow-relative horizons, condensate dynamics and correlations in a quantum fluid. Their central control variable is the relationship between the medium’s flow and its sound speed.
Choose an optical analogue when the question concerns light and material response
Optical systems are suited to questions about light modes, refractive-index perturbations, frequency conversion, dispersion and the feedback of an optical field on the process. Fibre platforms can offer precise control of travelling disturbances and direct optical readout.

Use both when comparing mechanisms
Because the two platforms share a horizon concept but differ materially, agreement between them can be informative about features that survive a change of medium. Any comparison still has to keep the wave type, dispersion and measurement protocol explicit.
Common misconceptions
“An acoustic black hole is a real black hole made of sound.”
No. It is a region of a moving medium in which sound experiences one-way, horizon-like propagation.
“An optical black hole traps ordinary light forever.”
No. The optical horizon applies to modes interacting with a designed refractive-index perturbation. It is not the event horizon of a gravitating object.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“A Hawking-like spectrum proves astronomical Hawking radiation.”
No. It supports the corresponding prediction in the analogue system. The medium’s dispersion, boundaries and other effects must be included in the interpretation.
“Stimulated and spontaneous Hawking radiation are interchangeable labels.”
No. A stimulated experiment uses an input field to drive or reveal the process; a spontaneous measurement concerns radiation-like excitations arising without that same external drive.
“Optical experiments are merely visual demonstrations.”
No. They involve quantitative measurements of optical fields and require analysis of refractive-index changes, frequency modes and dispersion. Their conclusions are limited by the analogue model, not by whether the setup resembles a picture of a black hole.
Why the distinction matters
Calling both systems “black holes” is useful only when the analogy is kept precise. It highlights a common mathematical structure—waves encountering a horizon—while leaving room for very different laboratory implementations. Acoustic experiments make flow and phonon dynamics accessible; optical experiments make light, dispersion and optical feedback accessible.

That division also prevents two opposite errors. It avoids treating an analogue as a literal astronomical object, and it avoids overlooking what the experiments genuinely accomplish: controlled tests of horizon-related wave physics that cannot be performed directly at a distant cosmic event horizon.
For readers asking whether scientists have detected Hawking radiation, the careful answer is: reports exist from laboratory analogues, including a 2020 condensate experiment and a 2026 fibre-optical study, but Hawking radiation from an astronomical black hole has not been observed.
