ACID and BASE are not opposing database types. ACID describes transaction guarantees: what must happen atomically, which rules concurrent work must preserve, how isolated transactions are, and what durability a commit provides. BASE is a loose design shorthand for systems that remain basically available, allow soft or changing state, and converge eventually rather than making every read immediately reflect the newest write.
A useful architecture can apply ACID to critical invariants and use asynchronous, eventually consistent propagation for data that can tolerate staleness. The decision should be made per operation, data flow, transaction boundary and failure mode—not from a vendor label such as relational, NoSQL, ACID or BASE.
What ACID actually guarantees
ACID is a set of transaction properties. It says how a defined transaction behaves, not that every read in a distributed application is globally current.
Atomicity
All operations in a transaction take effect, or none do. If a transfer debits one account and credits another, a failure must not leave only the debit committed when both operations belong to the same transaction.

Consistency
After a successful commit, the database’s declared rules and constraints remain valid. These rules can include uniqueness, referential integrity, check constraints or application invariants enforced inside the transaction. ACID consistency is about preserving those rules across a transaction; it is not automatically the same as every replica returning the latest write.
Isolation
Isolation controls how concurrent transactions interact. The exact result depends on the isolation level: weaker levels may permit particular anomalies, while serializable execution makes the outcome equivalent to some serial order. Stronger isolation can cause lock waits, aborts or retries, so the level and transaction scope must be documented rather than inferred from the word “ACID.”
Durability
Once a transaction is committed, its changes persist according to the system’s durability contract, such as replicated or flushed storage. Durability does not guarantee that every cache, search index or read replica has observed the change at the same instant.
What BASE means—and what it does not
BASE expands to Basically Available, Soft state, Eventual consistency. It is an umbrella term, not a precise protocol or a promise with one universal implementation.
- Basically available: the system aims to continue returning useful responses for many requests, even when some coordination is unavailable.
- Soft state: a value can change as replicas, caches or background processes receive information; the state is not necessarily fixed immediately after one write.
- Eventual consistency: if updates stop and the system’s convergence assumptions hold, replicas can become consistent later. The model still needs rules for stale reads, concurrent writes and conflicts.
Calling a design BASE does not mean “no consistency.” You must identify the actual model—such as eventual, session, causal or snapshot behavior—and explain how conflicts are detected and resolved. Two systems described as BASE may expose very different guarantees.
Why “consistency” creates confusion
Readers often use one word for two different properties. ACID consistency asks whether a transaction preserves database and application rules. CAP consistency asks whether a read returns the most recent completed write or reports an error when that cannot be guaranteed. A transaction can preserve an invariant while another replica is temporarily stale, and a globally current read does not by itself make a multi-step business operation atomic.

CAP applies when communication fails
The CAP theorem concerns a distributed system during a network partition, when messages between nodes are lost or delayed. In that condition, a partition-tolerant design cannot guarantee both a successful response for every request and a latest-write read from every side of the partition.
CAP consistency
A CAP-consistent response returns the most recent write, or an error if the system cannot establish that guarantee. This is a statement about distributed reads during a partition, not the ACID definition of preserving constraints inside a transaction.
CAP availability
Formal CAP availability means that requests receive non-error responses. It is narrower than an ordinary uptime target. FoundationDB’s CAP explanation gives the practical distinction: a majority partition may continue operating while an isolated machine cannot commit. The service can be highly available to clients connected to the majority without every partition accepting writes.
The real design choice during a partition
A system may reject or delay operations that require coordination, preserving a single authoritative result. Alternatively, it may accept more work on separated sides and reconcile divergent state later. The acceptable behavior depends on the invariant and the product: refusing a duplicate entitlement may be preferable to accepting an order that must later be cancelled, while a social reaction or telemetry sample may be safe to merge after a delay.
“Pick any two” is therefore an inadequate architecture rule. Partition tolerance is the failure condition under discussion, and the relevant question is what each operation does when coordination is impossible.

ACID and BASE are complementary design tools
The labels are not opposite ends of one database switch. A single system can use a serializable transaction for a bounded set of rows, replicate a read model asynchronously, cache results with a freshness window and expose a stale-but-useful view to users. A distributed store can support transactions for some scopes while offering weaker guarantees for other operations.

The meaningful unit of analysis is the operation and its invariant:
- Which facts must change together?
- Which constraint must never be violated?
- How stale may a read be, and who may see the temporary difference?
- What should happen if nodes cannot coordinate?
- How are duplicate, conflicting or retried writes handled?
Using BASE-style propagation does not remove correctness work. It moves part of that work into conflict resolution, reconciliation, retries and user-visible handling. Using ACID does not solve a workflow that crosses services or performs an external side effect after a commit.
ACID versus BASE: practical comparison
| Decision axis | ACID-oriented transaction | BASE-style propagation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Preserve invariants within a defined transaction | Keep useful work flowing and converge across replicas or components |
| State visibility | Committed state follows the transaction’s isolation and read guarantees | Readers may observe a prior value until propagation completes |
| Partition behavior | Operations needing coordination may block, abort or return an error | More operations may succeed, with divergence or reconciliation later |
| Write coordination | One transaction coordinates the participating records | Asynchronous replication, multi-writer handling or merge rules are common |
| Conflict responsibility | Database isolation and constraints prevent or expose many conflicts | Application or platform logic must define detection, resolution and compensation |
| Operational cost | Coordination can add lock waits, retries and distributed-transaction overhead | Lower coordination for some paths, but greater reconciliation and UX complexity |
| Typical fit | Balances, uniqueness, reservations and other strict invariants | Caches, feeds, search indexes, analytics views and other staleness-tolerant data |

What current systems demonstrate
Google Cloud Spanner
Google Cloud Spanner documents ACID read-write transactions and serializable isolation in a distributed service. Its documentation also describes transaction retries, locks, transaction-duration considerations and the cost of coordinating distributed work. Distribution therefore does not rule out ACID; it makes transaction scope and retry behavior important.
Spanner also warns that transaction code can be retried. An external side effect inside retried code—such as sending a message or charging a payment method—could occur more than once. Make such effects idempotent, record intent for a separate delivery process, or otherwise use a pattern that tolerates duplicate execution.
MongoDB
MongoDB documents atomic single-document operations and multi-document transactions, including transactions that span shards. Its manual notes that distributed transactions can cost more than single-document writes and should not substitute for effective schema design. A system commonly called NoSQL can therefore provide ACID behavior for specified scopes; that does not mean every operation has identical guarantees. Read and write concerns, transaction boundaries and deployment configuration determine the result.

PostgreSQL 16
PostgreSQL 16 documentation describes serializable transactions for consistency checks. A serialization failure can require a rollback and retry. Serializable isolation protects correctness only when the application handles those expected failures and keeps the transaction boundary appropriate.

- Name the invariant. Write the rule in a testable form, such as “a balance cannot become negative,” “a unique claim has one owner,” or “a reservation cannot exceed available inventory.” These are illustrative application rules, not automatic guarantees from any vendor.
- Define the atomic set. Identify the smallest set of records and actions that must commit together. A smaller boundary usually limits lock duration and distributed coordination while still protecting the rule.
- Specify read freshness. Decide whether a caller needs the latest committed value, a consistent snapshot, session or causal behavior, or an eventually convergent view. State who can observe a stale result and for how long the product can tolerate it.
- Choose partition behavior. For each request, decide whether to reject, wait, serve stale data, accept a potentially divergent write or return a pending status. Document the user-visible outcome rather than saying only “the system is available.”
- Design concurrent-write handling. Define idempotency keys, version checks, merge rules, conflict winners, compensating actions and retry limits. “Eventual” is incomplete until these rules exist.
- Account for side effects. Separate database commits from email, billing, inventory calls or other external actions unless the integration is explicitly designed for atomicity. Retries can repeat application code, so side effects need idempotent handling or durable delivery records.
- Measure the trade-off. Test the target workload for latency, throughput, lock contention, retry frequency, recovery time and reconciliation volume. There is no universal performance winner supported by the ACID or BASE label.
Patterns for combining both approaches
Strong core with asynchronous projections
Keep the authoritative invariant in one transaction, then publish a change for search, reporting, notifications or a user-facing read model. Consumers can be temporarily behind without allowing the authoritative balance, entitlement or reservation to become invalid. Expose a “processing” or “last updated” state when freshness matters to users.
Transactional decision, idempotent effect
Commit the business decision and an effect record together. A worker retries delivery of the effect and records a stable idempotency key so a repeated attempt does not create a second charge, email or fulfillment request. This preserves a strict decision while allowing the external system to be reached asynchronously.
Read-your-writes sessions
After a user changes data, route that user’s next reads to a sufficiently fresh source or carry a version token. Other users may still see an older projection. This is a product-level compromise between globally coordinated reads and an entirely stale-prone interface.
Partition-aware multi-writer updates
If both sides of a partition must accept writes, choose a mergeable data type or explicit conflict policy. Add versioning, deterministic tie-breaking or domain-specific reconciliation, and show users when a conflict changed their result. Do not assume last-write-wins is safe for quantities, ownership or money.

Common mistakes and their fixes
“ACID means every read is current”
Fix: state the transaction’s isolation, the read source and replication lag behavior. ACID properties do not automatically make caches, indexes or replicas synchronous.

“BASE means the database has no rules”
Fix: document the actual consistency model, convergence condition, conflict policy and stale-read experience. Enforce non-negotiable invariants at the authoritative write path.
“CAP says a system must permanently choose two letters”
Fix: describe behavior during a partition. Identify which requests fail or wait and which may succeed with divergence. Normal operation can provide strong transactions and high client-facing availability even though a partition forces a trade-off.
“A distributed transaction is always wrong”
Fix: use one when the invariant truly spans the participating records, then bound its duration and handle retries. Reshape the schema or workflow when a single-document or local transaction can protect the same rule more simply.

Questions to put in an architecture review
- Which invariant is protected by a single transaction, and where is it enforced?
- What isolation level and transaction scope are configured?
- Which reads may be stale, and what freshness bound or user signal exists?
- During a partition, which requests return an error, wait, read old data or accept a divergent write?
- How are duplicate submissions and retried callbacks deduplicated?
- How are concurrent writes merged, rejected or compensated?
- What monitoring reveals lag, failed commits, retry storms and unresolved conflicts?
- What recovery procedure rebuilds projections or reconciles replicas after an outage?
The human and product cost of each choice
Strong coordination can make correctness easier to reason about, but it may increase lock waits, aborts, cross-node latency and operational coupling. Eventual propagation can keep more paths responsive, but developers must build reconciliation, stale-data handling and conflict-aware interfaces. Google SRE’s discussion of critical state attributes the following observation to Jeff Shute: “we find developers spend a significant fraction of their time building extremely complex and error-prone mechanisms to cope with eventual consistency and handle data that may be out of date.” The point is a practitioner’s warning, not a universal measurement: choose eventual behavior deliberately when its product benefit exceeds that engineering cost.
Bottom line for system design
Ask “which guarantees does this operation need?” rather than “is the database ACID or BASE?” Put money, ownership, uniqueness and reservations behind transaction boundaries and constraints that preserve their invariants. Let caches, indexes, feeds, analytics and other staleness-tolerant views converge asynchronously when that improves resilience or scale. Then document partition behavior, retries, conflict resolution and user-visible freshness for every path. A well-designed system is often ACID at its core and BASE at its edges.
