The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI can deliver a bright, color-rich display and strong gaming performance, but Tom’s Guide’s review unit also ran hot and loud, weighed nearly 6 pounds, and lasted only 4 hours 11 minutes in its browsing-and-video battery test. Whether it is worth buying depends on the exact configuration: the tested laptop is not the same model as Acer’s US PHN16-73-7166 listing.
What Tom’s Guide tested—and what Acer lists
The Predator Helios Neo 16 AI is a family of configurations, not one fixed specification. Tom’s Guide published its review on September 22, 2026, and tested a unit with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, 32GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, and 1TB of storage. Its configuration table also describes a starting model and a higher-end model, neither of which should be mistaken for the tested unit.
| Configuration | Processor | Graphics | Memory and storage | Display |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tom’s Guide review unit | Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX | GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | 32GB RAM; 1TB storage | Review results refer to this tested unit; panel details are not stated here |
| Review table’s starting configuration | Core i7-14650HX | RTX 4060 | 16GB RAM; 512GB storage | 180Hz |
| Review table’s top configuration | Core Ultra 9 290HX | RTX 5080 | 32GB RAM; 1TB storage | 240Hz OLED |
| Acer US PHN16-73-7166 | Core Ultra 7 255HX | RTX 5070 with 8GB GDDR7 | 16GB RAM; 1TB PCIe NVMe 4.0 SSD | 16-inch, 2560 × 1600 IPS, 240Hz |
These specifications come from Tom’s Guide’s review and Acer’s US specification page for PHN16-73-7166. Configurations and availability can differ by region and date. Before comparing prices or reviews, check the product’s SKU, processor, graphics chip, memory, storage, and panel type; an IPS model and an OLED model are not interchangeable.

Tom’s Guide measured the review unit’s display at 520.8 nits peak brightness, with 155.2% sRGB and 109.9% DCI-P3 color coverage and a Delta-E color accuracy result of 0.09. Those are the review’s reported measurements, not results for every Helios Neo 16 AI configuration. Its configuration table lists refresh rates of 180Hz for the starting model and 240Hz OLED for the top model; Acer lists a 240Hz IPS panel on PHN16-73-7166.

In Tom’s Guide’s tests, the RTX 5070 Ti review unit ran games at native 1600p with these results:
| Game | Settings | Average frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| Counter-Strike 2 | Highest | 228fps |
| Forza Horizon 5 | Extreme | 112fps |
| F1 25 | Ultra High | 60fps |
The figures show why a 240Hz label is not a promise of 240 frames per second in every game. The review unit reached 228fps in Counter-Strike 2 but delivered lower frame rates in the other tested titles at the stated settings. When comparing laptops, use results for the same game, resolution, graphics settings, and GPU tier rather than treating refresh rate as a performance guarantee.

What are the main day-to-day drawbacks?
Battery life is limited away from a charger
Tom’s Guide recorded 4 hours 11 minutes in its web-browsing and video-streaming battery test at 150-nit brightness. Gaming on battery lasted just over 45 minutes in the review. Acer’s PHN16-73-7166 specification page gives a manufacturer maximum battery-run-time figure of 5 hours; that is an Acer specification, not a result from the same test, so the two figures should not be treated as directly comparable.
Expect substantial weight, heat, and fan noise
Tom’s Guide lists the top configuration at 5.95 pounds, and Acer lists the same weight for PHN16-73-7166. That makes it a substantial machine to carry, though the cited weight does not establish that every regional configuration weighs exactly the same. The reviewer also called out heat and fan noise as ownership concerns. If you need a quiet laptop or regularly move between locations, these compromises matter more than a high refresh rate.

Initial SSD results improved after removing installed software
With the pre-installed software present, Tom’s Guide reported SSD results of 1,092 MB/s write and 934 MB/s read. After uninstalling software, the review reported 3,128 MB/s write and 3,786 MB/s read. This is an observation about the tested unit and its software state, not proof that every unit will have the same out-of-box performance or respond identically to software removal.
The review also reported 2,749 single-core and 23,100 multi-core in Geekbench 7, and a 2:26 result for its 4K-to-1080p HandBrake transcode. These are additional results from Tom’s Guide’s review unit, not guaranteed outcomes for other configurations.

Is it worth buying?
Consider it if your priority is gaming at a high resolution on a bright, color-rich screen and you mostly play near a power outlet. The review’s results show strong performance in Counter-Strike 2 and Forza Horizon 5, though the frame rate varied considerably by game. The tested display measurements are appealing, but the exact panel and refresh rate depend on the configuration you buy.
Look elsewhere if you need long unplugged sessions, a lighter machine, or quieter cooling. The battery result, nearly 6-pound listed weight, and reviewer-reported heat and fan noise are meaningful trade-offs rather than minor spec-sheet footnotes.

For a purchase decision, compare the exact SKU and its price with similarly equipped laptops, matching the GPU tier where possible. Include panel technology and refresh rate, tested game settings, battery-test conditions, weight, and out-of-box SSD behavior in that comparison. Acer’s US store listing for PHN16-73-7166 was out of stock when accessed October 7, 2026, so its availability then should not be read as current or stable: Acer Store US listing for PHN16-73-7166.
Tom’s Guide summed up the review unit’s downsides this way: “The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI is far from perfect, with glaring issues when it comes to its battery life, SSD speeds (hampered by bloatware), cooling system, and its hefty weight.”
