Verdict: Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve delivers a compelling single-player campaign built around cinematic dogfights, consequential weather and a squadron of memorable characters. PC Gamer reviewer Nova Wright scored it 92/100, praising the game’s refinement of the series’ arcade flight action and dramatic storytelling. That is one publication’s review, not an aggregate score. The review does not establish how many hours the campaign takes, and its reviewer did not test multiplayer.
What is Ace Combat 8, and when did it launch?
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is the latest entry in Bandai Namco’s arcade flight-action series. Bandai Namco Studios listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam as platforms. The publisher’s worldwide launch announcement gives October 2, 2026 as the release date; early access began September 29. Bandai Namco Studios’ product page lists the platforms and planned date, while Bandai Namco Entertainment’s launch announcement confirms the worldwide release.
The publisher places the story in Strangereal, a fictional setting where the Federation of Central Usea is occupied. The player takes on the Wings of Theve identity and joins Joker Flight members Baxter, Tasha and Coster against the Republic of Sotoa. That is the official premise; the assessment of the story below comes from PC Gamer’s review.
How long is the Ace Combat 8 campaign?
No substantiated campaign completion time is available in the cited review or official material. There is not enough evidence here to give a reliable hour estimate, and a playtime figure should not be inferred from the review’s praise or score.

What makes the campaign stand out?
Weather changes how you fight
PC Gamer reviewer Nova Wright describes clouds as both cover and a hazard. Flying through cloud cover can offer relief from missile fire, but reduced visibility, ice and turbulence complicate the fight. Enemies also use the conditions, so weather is a combat factor rather than just a visual effect.
Dogfights and missions vary the action
The review characterizes dogfights as pursuit-and-chase encounters and praises the range of mission types. It also notes that the campaign gives air-to-ground-specialized aircraft opportunities to remain useful across more of the story, rather than making that role feel like a narrow detour.

- Magnetic contactless sensors provide smooth, accurate input and long‑lasting durability
- Independent throttle & brake levers offer fast, intuitive control for rapid speed adjustments during combat
- Ambidextrous, symmetrical design

Squadron drama carries weight
Wright praises the dialogue and characterization among Joker Flight and the opposing Shadows, as well as a dramatic late-campaign climax. The story’s mix of aerial action and heightened drama is a central part of the review’s positive case, not a claim that every enemy pilot is equally distinctive: the review identifies limited differentiation among some opposing pilots as a weakness.

- TAKE FLIGHT AS AN ELITE ACE — Step into the cockpit and soar through thrilling missions, intense dogfights, and high-stakes aerial combat developed by PROJECT ACES.
- AERIAL WARFARE IN LIVING SKIES — Experience stunning visuals featuring dynamic multi-layered cloudscapes, realistic weather conditions, and breathtaking skies that transform every battle.
- FAST-PACED ARCADE AIR COMBAT — Engage enemy aircraft, deploy powerful weapons, and dominate the battlefield with the signature high-speed gameplay the ACE COMBAT series is known for.
- A VISCERAL PILOT STORY — Experience dramatic first-person sequences, cinematic storytelling, squad relationships, and the pressures of command between missions.
- THE LARGEST ONLINE MODE IN SERIES HISTORY — Explore the franchise's first online lobby, customize your avatar, and sortie into online missions with pilots worldwide.
- Strengths: mechanically meaningful weather, varied encounters, useful aircraft-role variety, squadron characterization and a strong late-game climax.
- Weaknesses: some enemy pilots feel insufficiently distinct, and repeat superweapon encounters can feel rigid.
- PC performance: Wright tested on a Radeon RX 6600, Ryzen 7 7700X and 32GB DDR5 RAM. The reviewer reports mostly stable performance at 1440p, with occasional cutscene hitching and frame-rate dips in demanding scenes.
- PC controls and options: the review notes no field-of-view slider and one instance of stick-input ghosting after a frame-rate dip across two playthroughs.
- Multiplayer: the reviewer did not try it, so the 92/100 assessment should be read as evidence about the campaign and other reviewed aspects—not hands-on confirmation of multiplayer quality.
Is Ace Combat 8 worth playing?
If you want a single-player arcade flight game where missions, weather and character drama all shape the experience, the review makes a strong case for Ace Combat 8. Its best-supported strengths are the campaign’s combat variety and cinematic squadron story. The most important qualification is scope: multiplayer remains unassessed in this review, and the available sources do not establish campaign length, current price, retailer stock or joystick compatibility.
