ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE is the current mainline choice: it released on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam, and adds a much broader online structure than its predecessor. ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN remains the direct older alternative for its Strangereal campaign and established aircraft-customization formula. Project Wingman is the most distinct option, with an alternate-Earth story, Conquest mode, explicit VR support and HOTAS/DirectInput compatibility on PC.

What ACE COMBAT 8 offers
A released game, not an upcoming one
ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE launched on October 2, 2026. Early access began on September 29 for eligible purchases. Bandai Namco lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, and its launch announcement says the game is available now on those platforms. The official ACES WEB news index records both the October 2 release notice and the September 29 early-access notice.

The campaign setting and premise
The story is set in July 2029. The Federation of Central Usea has fallen under invasion by the Republic of Sotoa. The player is rescued by the carrier Endurance, receives the name Wings of Theve and inherits a legend created to maintain morale. The campaign follows the effort to reclaim the homeland alongside three comrades in the Joker Flight squadron.
This setup makes ACE COMBAT 8 a direct continuation of the series’ cinematic, fictional-war tradition while moving the location and cast to a new conflict. Official materials emphasize an arcade-style aerial-action structure rather than a military simulator. They also describe cinematic first-person scenes between combat, squad bonds and decisions that affect the story. Those are publisher descriptions; they should not be read as independent measurements of immersion or narrative quality.
Online play is the largest structural change
ACE COMBAT ONLINE has progression and save data separate from the single-player campaign. The official FAQ identifies several modes:
- Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare for cooperative sorties.
- Scramble and Emergency Sortie, listed as special online activities.
- Limited-time PvP events and other special PvE sorties.
- An Air Base hub that can host up to 100 players.
Bandai Namco says cross-play connects players across the listed platforms. That makes ACE COMBAT 8 the clear choice of these three games if your purchase decision depends on a supported, platform-spanning online ecosystem. The separate progression track also means online unlocks and campaign progress are not simply one shared save.
Season passes and paid content
The game includes a free ACE PASS and paid Premium Ace Pass tiers. According to the publisher, Premium tiers add seasonal rewards such as aircraft, cosmetics and aircraft-upgrade items. The Deluxe Edition includes a voucher for one season of Premium Ace Pass Plus. Bandai Namco says there are no paid loot boxes or randomized paid rewards and says there are currently no plans for consumables.
Seasonal rewards and availability are subject to change. A Premium Ace Pass is therefore an optional live-content purchase, not a requirement to access the core game or its campaign. Check the current platform store for the season, region and edition you are buying.
Technology claims and what they do not prove
Bandai Namco says ACE COMBAT 8 uses Unreal Engine 5 together with proprietary technology. The publisher has also used phrases such as “most immersive” and “breathtaking” in promotional material. Those are marketing claims, not independent performance tests. The available information does not establish frame rates, resolution targets, mission counts, load times or comparative visual performance against ACE COMBAT 7.

Campaign: new setting versus established Strangereal
ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN is the prior mainline baseline. Steam lists its release date as January 31, 2019, with Bandai Namco Studios Inc. as developer and Bandai Namco Entertainment as publisher. Its store description centers on high-speed dogfighting, aircraft and weapon customization and the fictional Strangereal setting.

ACE COMBAT 8 changes the fictional geography and presents a new FCU-versus-Sotoa conflict, the Wings of Theve legend and Joker Flight relationships. If you want a new campaign premise with explicit cinematic first-person sequences and decision points, the newer game is the more relevant purchase. If the appeal is returning to Strangereal and its established war setting, ACE COMBAT 7 remains the one that provides it.
The publisher calls ACE COMBAT 8 the first mainline entry in seven years. That supports treating ACE COMBAT 7 as the direct predecessor, but it does not prove that every control, mission structure or aircraft system is identical between the games.
Customization and combat expectations
ACE COMBAT 7’s official store description specifically highlights aircraft and weapon customization. ACE COMBAT 8’s cited materials emphasize its campaign presentation, online progression and seasonal rewards, but they do not provide a complete feature-by-feature specification of its aircraft roster, upgrade tree or mission count. Do not assume that a familiar ACE COMBAT 7 aircraft, control option or upgrade behaves exactly the same way in ACE COMBAT 8 without checking the current platform documentation.

For multiplayer, ACE COMBAT 8 has the strongest documented offering: cross-play, cooperative modes, limited-time PvP, special PvE sorties and a 100-player social hub. Steam’s ACE COMBAT 7 listing identifies single-player, while the official page reviewed here does not establish a comparable cross-platform online structure. That does not prove that every version of ACE COMBAT 7 has no other functionality; it means the available listing is not enough to promise a multiplayer feature to a buyer.

Is Project Wingman like Ace Combat?
Project Wingman is a credible alternative if you want fast, accessible flight action rather than a simulator. Steam describes it as a flight-action game designed for players who do not want a simulator experience. Its campaign takes place on an alternate-history Earth, not in ACE COMBAT’s Strangereal or the FCU/Sotoa setting.
Its defining modes and content
Project Wingman’s Steam description highlights:
- A single-player campaign on an alternate-history Earth.
- Conquest mode, a territory-capture experience with roguelike and RPG elements.
- More than 20 aircraft and over 40 weapons.
Those details make it similar to Ace Combat in broad format—arcade-oriented aerial combat, fictional conflicts and a campaign built around aircraft and weapons—but distinct in structure. Conquest gives Project Wingman a separate replay-oriented mode rather than simply reproducing the mainline Ace Combat campaign format.
VR and HOTAS support
Project Wingman’s Steam page explicitly states VR support and compatibility with HOTAS equipment using DirectInput peripherals. That is a concrete advantage for a PC player who already owns a compatible flight stick or wants to play in VR.

Do not transfer that assumption to ACE COMBAT 8. The official ACE COMBAT 8 sources reviewed do not establish VR or HOTAS support. ACE COMBAT 7’s Steam page carries a VR tag, but the available information does not explain which modes or platforms that tag covers. Check the current store listing and hardware documentation for your exact edition before buying accessories.

Choose by the feature you care about most
Choose ACE COMBAT 8 if…
- You want the newest mainline campaign and a current FCU/Sotoa story.
- You play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Steam and want documented cross-play.
- You want co-op, limited-time PvP, special PvE sorties and a large online hub.
- You are comfortable treating seasonal passes as optional content that may change over time.
Choose ACE COMBAT 7 if…
- You specifically want the Strangereal setting.
- You value the aircraft and weapon customization emphasized in its Steam description.
- You are buying an older mainline entry and have verified the platform version you need.
Choose Project Wingman if…
- You want an independent, alternate-history campaign rather than either Ace Combat setting.
- Conquest’s territory-capture structure and roguelike/RPG elements appeal to you.
- You want explicit Steam-listed VR and HOTAS/DirectInput support.
- You are shopping for a PC-focused flight-action game and do not need documented cross-play multiplayer.
Platforms, editions and purchase checks
ACE COMBAT 8 editions
The official ACE COMBAT 8 page lists Standard and Deluxe editions. Deluxe includes the full game, three days of early access, a Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher and cosmetics. Because the game has already launched, do not assume preorder bonuses are still included: Bandai Namco says the Deluxe Edition remains purchasable after launch, but preorder early-access bonuses are not included in post-launch purchases.
The same page lists the Joker Flight Pack. It combines the Deluxe Edition with ACES at WAR: A HISTORY 2029, described as a book of more than 200 pages, plus two LP vinyl records with a slipcover and slipmat. Those physical extras belong to that collector bundle; they are not part of the ordinary digital Deluxe Edition.
Before checkout, verify the seller, platform, region, edition name and current inventory. Digital platform purchases should not be described as including the collector pack’s book or vinyl unless the specific listing says so.
Hardware and storefront verification
Platform features can differ even when a game has the same title. Check the current listing for:
- Whether your console or PC storefront carries the edition you want.
- Whether cross-play is enabled for the mode you intend to use.
- Whether VR support applies to the game, a particular mode or a specific platform.
- Whether your DirectInput or HOTAS device is supported by the exact PC version.
- What a Premium Ace Pass season currently contains and how long its rewards remain available.
What the available information does not establish
No reliable comparison here establishes frame-rate targets, image quality, mission counts, aircraft totals for ACE COMBAT 8, control latency, review consensus or a universal ranking of the three games. The documented evidence supports comparing setting, campaign presentation, online scope, platform access and hardware support—not declaring one title objectively superior in every respect.
Likewise, the presence of a Steam VR tag for ACE COMBAT 7 does not identify supported modes, and Project Wingman’s explicit HOTAS support does not establish compatibility with a particular flight stick model in either Ace Combat game. Treat those as questions to verify on the current platform page rather than as cross-game guarantees.
Bottom-line buying advice
Buy ACE COMBAT 8 for the newest mainline campaign and the only one of these three with a clearly documented cross-play online ecosystem. Buy ACE COMBAT 7 for its Strangereal setting and established customization-focused formula. Buy Project Wingman when alternate-history storytelling, Conquest mode, VR or HOTAS support matters more than the Ace Combat brand and its online structure.
