How to fight the X-40 Nightmare
Keep speed and avoid drawn-out pursuits
The walkthrough’s central flying advice is to preserve speed and avoid long extensions while the X-40 makes aggressive turns and post-stall maneuvers. Rather than following every turn, stay ready to attack when the boss takes a predictable path or is recovering from a maneuver. The guide also recommends using cloud cover or flares against locks.
Use guns up close and save missiles for a good angle
At close range, the walkthrough recommends gunfire. Save missiles for favorable rear or side opportunities instead of spending them during an extended chase. This gives you two different attack windows: guns when you can stay close, and missiles when the boss presents a more useful angle.

Change priorities as the phases shift
Deal with UAVs when they create a barrier
The walkthrough says escort UAVs can provide a barrier during the fight. When that happens, use the recommended 4AAM or HCAA to deal with them; otherwise, keep your focus on the main encounter. The guide does not establish that destroying every UAV is necessary in every phase.
Pressure the detached aircraft sections
Later phases reportedly involve detached sections of the aircraft. The walkthrough advises continuing to pressure these targets rather than treating the fight as a return to a single, unchanged target. Reassess which section is exposed as the encounter develops.

Target the nose unit in the final close-range sequence
In the final sequence, the walkthrough calls for aggressive gun use and says to focus on the nose unit and its laser designator. This is the point where its advice shifts most clearly toward close-range pressure rather than waiting for a missile opportunity.
Time limit reported by the walkthrough
Power Up Gaming reports a 30-minute mission time limit. This is the third-party guide’s claim; the reviewed official material does not independently confirm that figure. Its practical implication is to avoid wasting time on unproductive extensions and take attacks when the boss’s path or recovery gives you a reasonable opening.
