ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE launched worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. It has a single-player story campaign and a separate online mode with cross-play, cooperative and competitive activities, and an Air Base hub for up to 100 players. Bandai Namco has not published a verified campaign-hours estimate, and current official material does not confirm a complete list of compatible HOTAS or flight-stick models.

How long is the Ace Combat 8 campaign?
There is no verified number of hours for completing the ACE COMBAT 8 campaign. Bandai Namco’s official game descriptions explain that Campaign Mode is a single-player, story-driven experience built around high-stakes missions, difficult choices and relationships within the player’s squadron, but they do not translate those features into a runtime figure.
That means any precise claim such as “20 hours” or “40 hours” should be treated as an estimate from an individual player or publication rather than an official specification. Mission difficulty, selected objectives, retries and optional activities can also make a large difference to the time required. A war in Strangereal
The PlayStation Blog places the story in July 2029 in the fictional world of Strangereal. The Federation of Central Usea is invaded by the neighboring Republic of Sotoa. The player joins the effort to retake the capital, Theve, after being rescued by the aging aircraft carrier Endurance.

Different mission types
Official story material describes air-to-air battles, ground-attack missions, anti-ship operations and encounters with giant weapons. The setting therefore covers more than conventional fighter-versus-fighter sorties: your aircraft choice and weapon loadout may need to suit naval targets, ground forces or unusually large threats.
Aircraft and squadron decisions
Bandai Namco’s PlayStation Blog says the game includes more than 30 aircraft. They are grouped as fighters, attack aircraft, multi-role aircraft and electronic-warfare aircraft. The campaign also lets players choose a squadron composition and issue commands to wingmen, while the developer describes decisions and squad connections as central parts of the story.
The fictional Land Battleship is described as approximately 450 meters long. That number is a scale detail from the game’s story world, not a real-world performance specification or a promise about a particular mission’s difficulty.

Does Ace Combat 8 have multiplayer?
Yes. Multiplayer is provided through ACE COMBAT ONLINE, a mode separate from Campaign Mode. The publisher’s FAQ says online progression and save data are maintained independently from the single-player campaign, so progress in one mode does not function as progress in the other.
Air Base hub
ACE COMBAT ONLINE uses an Air Base hub that can accommodate up to 100 players. This is a social and organizational space for the online mode rather than an indication that every activity places 100 aircraft into one combat mission.
Cooperative activities
The official FAQ identifies Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare. In Co-Op Assault, two teams of four compete for the highest score while fighting computer-controlled enemies, making the listed format an eight-player, team-based player-versus-environment activity. Co-Op Warfare is also named by the publisher, although the FAQ does not provide the same level of rules detail for that activity.

Competitive and time-limited events
Bandai Namco’s European launch announcement adds cross-platform play, time-limited emergency missions, competitive player-versus-player events and an online reward system. These activities are part of the online service and should not be confused with the campaign’s story progression.

The October 9 release update from Bandai Namco confirms availability after the October 2 launch. The publisher also describes cross-play, allowing players on the listed console and PC platforms to play together online. Cross-play does not mean that every platform has identical graphics settings, frame-rate options or input menus; the available material does not provide a standardized performance comparison.
Which platform should you choose?
Choose PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S if you want a console setup
The two current-generation consoles are the straightforward choices for players who want a fixed living-room system and do not need PC graphics options. Select the console you already own, especially if your friends are concentrated on one platform. Cross-play reduces the importance of platform choice for online matchmaking, but your local controller, display and storage setup still matter.

Choose Steam PC if you want configuration flexibility
Steam is the listed PC distribution platform. A PC can offer more flexibility in display settings and peripheral configuration, but the flight-stick situation requires particular caution: the existence of a USB connection or a device that worked in ACE COMBAT 7 does not establish that every control option will be available in ACE COMBAT 8.
Do not buy for an unlisted platform

Early access began on September 29, three days before the worldwide October 2 launch, for editions that included that benefit. After launch, do not assume that a listing still grants preorder bonuses simply because it uses the same edition name.

Does Ace Combat 8 support a flight stick or HOTAS?
A blanket “yes” would be too broad. The available information does not provide an official device-by-device compatibility matrix for ACE COMBAT 8.
A troubleshooting thread in the ACE COMBAT community reproduces a statement attributed to the ACE COMBAT Team: “At this time, some of the configuration options available for certain devices in ACE COMBAT 7 are not available in ACE COMBAT 8.” The reproduced statement says the team is reviewing the situation and working on improvements for flight-stick users. Because the original official post was not independently located with the material available here, treat that wording as a developer statement quoted by the community post, not as a complete support list.
What this means before you buy hardware
- Do not buy a named HOTAS or flight stick solely because it worked with ACE COMBAT 7.
- Check the current game’s control menus and the latest patch notes for your platform.
- Verify whether the game detects the device, assigns axes correctly and exposes the calibration or mapping options you need.
- Confirm the retailer’s return policy before purchasing hardware for this game.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Connect the stick or HOTAS before launching the game, then check whether it appears in the input-device list.
- Open the game’s control configuration and test pitch, roll, yaw, throttle and trigger inputs independently.
- Look for missing axis assignment, dead-zone or sensitivity controls; those are the kinds of configuration options the reproduced developer statement says may be unavailable for some devices.
- Update the game and the device’s platform drivers or firmware where applicable.

How successful was the launch?
In an October 9, 2026 announcement, Bandai Namco Entertainment America said ACE COMBAT 8 had reached one million units worldwide and had done so at the fastest pace in the franchise. That is a publisher-reported sales milestone, not an independent sales audit, and it does not predict future online population, discounts or support duration.
What is still unknown?

- A complete, current list of supported flight sticks and HOTAS models has not been established.
- The available material does not provide a standardized performance comparison between PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam PC.

Those gaps matter because they affect buying decisions. A campaign-hours number should not be inferred from the number of aircraft or mission types, and a device that worked in the previous game should not be treated as guaranteed hardware support.
Bottom line for prospective players
ACE COMBAT 8 is a current-generation and PC flight-combat game with a story campaign, more than 30 aircraft, squadron and wingman decisions, and a separate cross-play online mode. Buy it on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Steam according to the platform and input setup you already use. Choose the Deluxe or Joker Flight Pack for their documented extras, not for an assumed campaign length. If a flight stick is essential, wait for device-specific confirmation or a later official compatibility update, because current information does not justify promising full HOTAS support.
