Modern appliances are not uniformly inaccessible, but controls that rely on touchscreens or phone apps can be difficult to use when they lack tactile, spoken, or screen-reader access. Some manufacturers document tactile labels, audio guidance, and app-based accessibility features; which options work depends on the exact appliance model, language, market, and setup.

Why appliance controls can be hard to use

An appliance may have settings that are difficult to identify by touch or confirm without visual feedback. A touchscreen can hide controls behind menus, while an app may require a phone and account before it can operate the appliance. These are interface and access challenges, not evidence that every modern appliance is unusable by blind people.

When choosing a washer, dryer, or cooking appliance, evaluate the controls and their feedback—not just the feature list. A tactile knob may be easier to locate than a flat panel, but it is still important to know whether the appliance confirms the selected setting in an accessible way.

Tactile points and Braille labels

Samsung’s U.S. appliance accessibility page says tactile points are applied to key buttons and that Braille stickers are available on request for washer and dryer models released from 2019 onward. This is a specific offer for eligible Samsung laundry models, not a general promise that labels are available for every appliance. Samsung appliance accessibility

GE Appliances announced an Access Kit on February 27, 2024, developed with the American Printing House for the Blind. The company described more than 400 tactile and Braille stickers intended to identify buttons, knobs, and functions; its announcement says the designs cover 80 common settings across thousands of GE appliances. These are the announcement’s product claims, not independent usability findings. Check current availability and whether labels fit your specific controls before relying on the kit. Spoken guidance and phone screen-reader access

Samsung documents voice guidance on some screen-equipped products and SmartThings TalkBack support for appliance controls. Its U.S. documentation lists the SmartThings app, Wi-Fi, a Samsung account, connected devices using the same account, and a mobile device among the requirements for the SmartThings TalkBack path. Samsung’s global information says adjustments made through an appliance’s SmartThings page can be read aloud on a mobile device, while warning that availability and functionality vary by model and language. 1. Identify the control surface. Ask whether the main controls are physical buttons or knobs, labeled controls, a touchscreen, or accessible only through an app. Find out whether labels can be read or located by touch.
  2. Check feedback after a selection. Confirm whether the appliance or companion app announces the selected cycle, temperature, timer, or other important setting. Do not assume that an audible alert means every menu or setting is accessible.
  3. List setup requirements. Ask whether use depends on a phone, Wi-Fi, an account, a particular app, or a voice assistant. If you plan to use a phone screen reader, verify that the app and the relevant appliance controls support it.
  4. Verify the exact product and region. Get the full model number and check the feature against that model, its release year, the language you use, and the market where it is sold. A feature described on a global or brand-wide page may not apply to every local model.
  5. Ask about adapting existing controls. If you already own the appliance, check whether compatible tactile labels or another documented accessory can be fitted. Before applying stickers, confirm which controls they identify and whether their size and placement suit the appliance.

These checks are a practical comparison framework, not a published accessibility standard. If possible, ask the manufacturer to confirm the details in writing or arrange a demonstration using the exact model.

Adapting appliances you already own

Tactile labels may help identify existing buttons, knobs, or functions without replacing the appliance. GE Appliances’ announced Access Kit is one documented example, and Samsung describes an on-request Braille-sticker offer for eligible washers and dryers. Neither reference alone establishes current stock, universal fit, or availability in every country. Confirm fit and availability with the manufacturer before making a purchase decision.

What the available information does—and does not—show

The cited feature descriptions come from manufacturers, including a GE Appliances announcement made with the American Printing House for the Blind. They document features and stated requirements, but do not provide independent comparative testing or establish real-world usability for every blind or low-vision user. Treat each feature as a reason to investigate a model, not proof that its entire interface is accessible.
