KIO S3 lets Linux users access Amazon S3 buckets and objects from KDE applications that use KIO, including Dolphin, Kate, and Gwenview. It is a software integration—not a storage provider—and support for any particular S3-compatible service is not established by KDE’s product page.
What KIO S3 does
KDE describes KIO S3 as a way for KIO-aware applications to access and edit Amazon S3 buckets and objects. In practical terms, it connects supported file-management and editing apps to object storage, so you can work with bucket contents from an application such as Dolphin rather than treating KIO S3 as a separate cloud-storage service. Amazon S3 stores data as objects in buckets, accessed through keys and a REST interface. KIO S3 provides an application-facing route to that storage; it does not supply the bucket or the underlying storage account. AWS describes its service at Amazon S3 FAQs.
How do I access an Amazon S3 bucket in Dolphin?
Install KIO S3 through your Linux distribution’s package manager or an available AppStream software store, then use a KIO-aware application such as Dolphin to access S3. KDE names Dolphin, Kate, and Gwenview as examples. The available official product-page information does not document the exact connection fields or click-by-click setup, so consult the KIO S3 handbook linked from KDE’s page for current instructions rather than guessing endpoint or authentication settings.

How do I install KIO S3 on Linux?
KDE lists Linux installation through Discover, other AppStream stores, or your distribution’s package manager. Package availability and the exact package name can vary by distribution; search your distribution’s software catalog for KIO S3 and follow its installation steps. KDE identifies the software as GPL-2.0-or-later.
Does KIO S3 work with S3-compatible storage?
Do not assume that a service will work solely because it describes its storage as S3-compatible. KDE’s product page specifically confirms access to Amazon S3, but does not name other providers or document which endpoints, authentication methods, API features, or operations KIO S3 supports for them. Verify the provider and required configuration in the KIO S3 handbook or project documentation before relying on the connection.

AWS documents strong read-after-write consistency for writes and listings in Amazon S3. That is an AWS service behavior, not evidence that every S3-compatible implementation behaves the same way; check the chosen provider’s documentation for its guarantees. See AWS S3 features.

Latest release and large-file changes
KDE lists KIO S3 version 1.0.2, dated April 23, 2026, as its latest release. KDE says it improves large-file handling by refining multipart-upload chunking and streaming downloads instead of buffering them in memory. The page also lists version 1.0.1, dated March 24, 2026, with fixes for renaming S3 profiles and more standard mkdir operations, and version 1.0.0, dated March 13, 2026, as the initial release. These are release notes, not a published performance benchmark.

KDE’s KIO S3 page links to a handbook and a community forum. Use the handbook for setup and configuration details; ask in the forum if the documentation does not address your distribution or connection scenario. The page also offers ways to support KDE, but does not make a contribution a requirement for using KIO S3.
