For Skill Exchange, backend engineer Mohan describes a two-rail checkout: international buyers choose USD and pay through PayPal, while Indian buyers choose INR and pay through Razorpay with UPI. The design lesson is not that one provider fits every buyer; it is to let the buyer choose a currency, keep the choice visible, and verify the resulting payment on the server before recording a sale.
This case study follows Mohan’s account of building checkout for an India-based marketplace. It describes his implementation and design judgments, not a controlled test of conversion or a statement of current provider policy. His article was published August 2, 2026: Mohan’s Skill Exchange checkout article on DEV Community.
Why the checkout uses two payment paths
Mohan reports that testing PayPal with Indian buyer and merchant accounts produced a domestic payment failure, while international purchases worked in his tests. His implementation therefore routes buyers to separate providers: PayPal for USD purchases by international buyers, and Razorpay for INR purchases by Indian buyers, including UPI.
That is a practical account of one implementation, not a guarantee that either provider currently supports or disallows a particular transaction. In particular, the article says PayPal stopped India-to-India domestic payments in April 2021, but that historical claim and current PayPal policy are not independently established here. Check each provider’s current documentation and account-specific terms before relying on a payment route.

Let buyers choose the currency and payment rail
In Mohan’s design, choosing the currency also chooses the provider. The checkout uses the browser timezone only to set an initial default: Asia/Kolkata or Asia/Calcutta defaults to INR; other timezones default to USD. The buyer can change the selection.
This distinction matters. Timezone is a convenience heuristic, not proof of residence, nationality, or preferred payment method. An Indian buyer may be travelling; someone outside India may want to pay in rupees. Keep the selector visible rather than making the default a lock. As Mohan puts it, “The important design decision is that the buyer chooses the rail, at checkout, by choosing a currency.”
Set local prices deliberately, not by treating an example rate as current
Mohan’s pricing helper starts with a USD catalogue price, multiplies by a configurable INR_RATE, rounds to the nearest ₹100, subtracts ₹1 to reach a ₹x99 price point, and returns the amount in paise. His sample code uses INR_RATE = 86; that is an example parameter in his 2026 article, not a verified current exchange rate.

These are illustrative outputs from that helper, not observed market prices or evidence that a particular price point improves conversion. If using this pattern, decide how often to update the conversion parameter, whether local prices should remain stable between updates, and how to handle refunds or price changes. The article does not provide a conversion study or a cited basis for its broader claim about regional willingness to pay.
Keep currency, amount, and commission in the transaction record
A ledger amount is ambiguous unless the currency is stored with it: USD cents and INR paise are both integer minor-unit amounts but represent different currencies. Persist the currency and the amount in that currency’s minor units for every purchase. Also store the commission applied at the time of sale, so a later fee change does not rewrite the accounting for an older transaction.
Mohan reports that his marketplace commission changed from 10% to 5%. That is his business history, not a current fee schedule or a recommendation for another marketplace. Seller totals should be grouped by currency rather than added into a single number without a conversion rule; if displaying a converted aggregate, make the exchange-rate basis and date explicit.

Verify payment server-side before writing the ledger
The core safety principle in Mohan’s implementation is to treat the provider’s verified order record—not the browser’s success message or claimed amount—as the source for recording a payment. He describes these provider-specific checks:

- PayPal: capture the order on the server, require
status === "COMPLETED", and compare the order’scustom_idwith the expected item and buyer. - Razorpay: verify the checkout HMAC signature, fetch the order on the server, check its notes against the expected item and buyer, then record the amount and currency from the fetched order.
These are the steps described in Mohan’s article, not a substitute for current provider documentation. Before deploying an integration, confirm the exact API flow, signature procedure, and order fields against the provider’s current documentation. The application should bind the server-created order to the intended buyer and item, reject mismatches, and only then persist the provider-confirmed amount and currency.

A hand-built split gives the marketplace control over the buyer’s currency choice, provider-specific checkout, and ledger design, but the team must implement and maintain each integration and its reconciliation. Mohan’s article comments also raise the merchant-of-record model as an alternative: a service may take on some payment-method routing and related operational work, but the article does not verify any named service’s current India capabilities or terms.

Before choosing a merchant-of-record, verify the details that affect this marketplace rather than assuming it solves local checkout:
- Whether buyers in India can use UPI and what that checkout experience looks like.
- Whether the service onboards sellers in the relevant country and business category.
- Total fees compared with direct processors and the marketplace’s own costs.
- Settlement currency, timing, and the reporting needed for seller accounting.
- Which parts of payment routing, tax handling, and transaction reconciliation the service actually assumes.
Mohan names Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, and Polar as options he considered; they are not vetted recommendations here. Their current eligibility, fees, settlement conditions, and India-facing payment methods need direct confirmation before a decision.
