To host an Abyssal Ascent server, install the dedicated server pack for one exact modpack release, run it with a 64-bit Java 17 installation, accept the Minecraft EULA, configure server.properties, and make every player use the identical Minecraft, Forge, and Abyssal Ascent versions. The current files listing identifies Abyssal Ascent 0.2.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, released September 22, 2026. A dedicated server pack is also listed for the 0.2.2.2 release, so check the attachment for the release you actually choose rather than assembling a server from a random client folder.
This guide covers a Windows or Linux/macOS self-hosted installation, memory planning, remote connectivity, upgrades, and the failure points that most often prevent players from joining.
What makes Abyssal Ascent servers different
Abyssal Ascent is a Forge modpack designed around a vertical progression through at least eight dimensions connected with Immersive Portals. Progression begins in the Undergarden and moves through hostile realms toward the Overworld. The pack adds custom recipes, bosses, biomes, equipment, resources, and proximity voice chat.
That design makes the server more sensitive to version changes than a small collection of independent mods. A world can contain portal links, dimension data, structures, recipes, and player inventories that depend on a particular pack build. Treat a pack update as a world migration: stop the server, make a complete backup, test the new files, and keep a rollback copy.

Choose one compatible release before downloading anything
Do not start by copying the newest-looking files into an existing installation. First decide whether you are creating a new world or preserving an existing one.
For a new server
The current listing is Abyssal Ascent 0.2.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, released September 22, 2026. Use that release if all players can install it and you are starting without a world that depends on an older build.

Keep the exact release that created the world unless the project specifically documents a safe migration. The files listing still shows earlier 0.2.2.x builds and a separate 1.19.2 line. A 1.19.2 installation is not interchangeable with a 1.20.1 installation, even when the pack name is the same.

Write the chosen pack version, Minecraft version, and Forge version in a short setup note. That note prevents a later “almost the same” download from silently replacing the files you intended to run.
Server requirements and realistic memory planning
The Abyssal Ascent project reports a stable allocation of 4 GB RAM in its 2025/2026 guidance. That is project guidance from its testing, not a guaranteed minimum for every host. Actual needs vary with player count, loaded dimensions, view distance, simulation distance, Java performance, storage speed, and the rest of the host’s workload.
The same project lists 6 GB RAM for a client targeting 100-plus frames per second at 1080p with Complementary shaders. That is a client example, not a server requirement. The accompanying Core i5-6700 or Ryzen 5 1600 and RTX 2060 6 GB or Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB examples describe that graphical client target and should not be used to size a headless server.
How much RAM should you assign?
- Begin near the project’s published 4 GB allocation for a small private server.
- Watch the server log, garbage-collection pauses, tick time, and operating-system memory pressure while several players explore.
- Increase the value gradually in
user_jvm_args.txtif monitoring shows genuine memory pressure and the host has spare physical RAM. - Do not assume that assigning 8 GB or more is safer. The project warns that higher allocations can cause instability on some systems.
- Leave enough memory for the operating system, Java overhead, file cache, and any other services on the machine.
RAM cannot compensate for a slow CPU, overloaded host, poor storage, or an incorrectly matched modpack. If the server remains unstable at a sensible allocation, inspect logs and configuration before adding more memory.

Download the correct server pack
Use the project’s files listing and select the exact release chosen in the previous step. Prefer a dedicated server-pack attachment when one is provided. For 1.20.1, the listing includes a dedicated Forge server pack for 0.2.2.2; check the individual entry for the matching attachment when running another release such as 0.2.3.
A server pack normally contains the Forge launch files, libraries, configuration, scripts, and the mod files intended for server use. Do not build a server by copying an arbitrary client’s mods directory. Client installations can contain graphics, interface, or other client-only components, and they may not include the launch structure expected by modern Forge.
Use a dedicated folder
Create a new folder for this server, such as AbyssalAscent-0.2.3-server. Keep it separate from the client’s .minecraft directory and from every other modded server. A separate folder keeps worlds, logs, configuration, backups, and rollback files easy to identify.

Extract the complete server-pack archive into that folder. Do not run the archive in place, nest the files several directories deep, or overwrite an older installation before making a backup.
Install and verify 64-bit Java 17
Forge’s 1.20.x documentation requires a 64-bit Java 17 JDK or JVM. Verify the active Java before launching the server:
java -versionThe output should identify Java 17 and a 64-bit runtime. If it reports another major version, a 32-bit runtime, or “command not found,” install a 64-bit Java 17 distribution and ensure the operating system’s PATH points to it. On machines with multiple Java installations, verify the command from the same account that will run the server; a terminal opened under another account can resolve a different executable.
Do not use a generic command such as java -jar forge.jar unless the specific server pack instructs you to do so. Modern Forge server packs commonly generate or supply launch scripts that assemble the required class path and arguments.

First launch: run Forge’s supplied script
Launch from the extracted server folder. On Windows, use run.bat. On Linux or macOS, use run.sh; make it executable first if the archive did not preserve that permission:
chmod +x run.sh
./run.shThe first run may download libraries, create directories, generate a world, and then stop because the EULA has not been accepted. That stop is expected.
Set the memory arguments in the supported file
Edit user_jvm_args.txt to control Java memory. Use the syntax already present in the file or in the server-pack instructions. Keep the allocation close to the project’s 4 GB guidance initially, then adjust in measured steps after observing real server behavior. Avoid editing generated launch files when the pack supplies user_jvm_args.txt; generated scripts can be replaced during a Forge update.
Accept the EULA
- Run the supplied script once and wait for it to stop.
- Open the generated
eula.txtin the server folder. - Read the Minecraft EULA and change
eula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept it. - Save the file and run
run.batorrun.shagain.
The server will not continue until this file contains the accepted value. If the file is regenerated or the process still reports an EULA stop, confirm that you edited the copy in the active server folder rather than a similarly named backup directory.

After a successful first generation, stop the server cleanly before editing files. The main supported surfaces are server.properties and the config directory.
Important server.properties settings
- motd: Set a recognizable server name so players can identify the correct entry in their multiplayer list.
- difficulty: Choose the intended difficulty before inviting players; changing it later affects gameplay but does not repair an already mismatched pack.
- white-list: Enable it for a private group and add approved player names from the server console.
- view-distance: Start conservatively if the host struggles while players explore multiple dimensions, then raise it only after monitoring.
- simulation-distance: Keep active entity and block simulation within what the CPU can sustain.
- server-port: The default Minecraft port is 25565. If you choose another value, that value must be used in firewall rules, router forwarding, and the address players enter.
Review the rest of the file rather than changing every option at once. Make one related change, restart, and inspect the log so a performance or connectivity regression has an identifiable cause.
Review the config directory
Mod configuration files control pack-specific behavior such as progression, recipes, portal mechanics, world generation, and voice-chat settings. Change only documented values or settings you understand. Keep a copy of the original configuration before making extensive edits; an invalid value can stop the server during startup or create a gameplay rule that differs from the clients’ expectations.

Make remote access work
A server that works on the host computer is not automatically reachable from the internet. Test in stages so you know whether the problem is the game, the local network, or the router.

- Ask another device on the same home network to connect using the host’s private LAN address and configured port.
- Allow the Java server process through the host firewall, or create an inbound rule for the configured TCP port according to the operating system’s firewall interface.
- On the router, forward the same port to the host computer’s private LAN address. Reserve that address with a DHCP reservation if possible so forwarding does not break after a reboot.
- Give remote players the reachable public address and port. If
server-portremains 25565, the standard address format omits the port only when the client can use that default; include:portwhen using another value. - Retest after every networking change. A successful local connection does not prove that router forwarding or the public address is correct.
Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding. In that situation, a conventional home-hosted server may be unreachable even with correct firewall and router settings; use a network service that provides an inbound route or a managed host instead of repeatedly changing the Minecraft files.
Ensure every client matches the server
Each player must install the same Abyssal Ascent release, Minecraft version, Forge loader line, and any required client-side configuration. A server running 0.2.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge should not be joined with a 0.2.2.x client or with the 1.19.2 line.
When a player is rejected, compare the complete version strings rather than only the pack’s first two numbers. Also check that the client launcher selected Forge, not vanilla Minecraft or another loader, and that the player is launching the intended profile. If the server pack includes a required voice-chat or configuration component, confirm that the client has it before troubleshooting the network.
What not to synchronize blindly
Do not overwrite the server’s world, server.properties, or config directory with a client copy. Client configuration can contain local display settings and other values that do not belong on a dedicated server. Distribute only the files the pack or its documentation explicitly identifies as shared.

Back up before changing versions
Stop the server with its console stop command and wait for the process to exit before copying files. At minimum, preserve:
- The complete
worlddirectory, including any dimension data. - The
configdirectory. server.properties,eula.txt, whitelist and operator files, and other server settings.- The exact server-pack archive and the launch scripts used for the working installation.
- A dated copy of logs from the last known-good session.
Store the backup outside the live server folder. Label it with the pack version, Minecraft version, date, and whether players were online. Test that the archive can actually be opened before deleting an older backup.

For an update, duplicate the old server folder, apply the new server pack to the duplicate as directed by the project, and test with a copy of the world. Keep the original untouched until players have connected, portals load correctly, and the log remains free of new errors. Never downgrade a world by simply replacing newer files with older ones; restore the complete older backup instead.

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, configuration, backups, Java, and the network. It can be inexpensive when you already have an always-on machine, but you are responsible for every update, firewall rule, crash recovery, and storage failure.
The Abyssal Ascent project names Kinetic Hosting as its recommended partner and says the pack is available through that provider’s one-click modpack installer, with updates tested on those servers. Treat current plan limits, pricing, availability, and commercial terms as details to verify at the time of purchase; they can change.

Choose self-hosting when you need unrestricted file access and can maintain the machine and network. Choose managed hosting when avoiding Java maintenance, port forwarding, and continuous hardware administration is worth the recurring charge.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The process crashes before the server finishes loading
- Run
java -versionand confirm a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. - Verify that the server pack, Minecraft version, and Forge line belong to the same Abyssal Ascent release.
- Check the first error and its preceding “caused by” lines in the latest log rather than relying on the final generic crash message.
- Restore the untouched server-pack files if you manually copied client mods or edited launch files.
The console stops with an EULA message
Open the eula.txt generated in the active server directory, read the license, set eula=true only if you accept it, save, and run the supplied script again.
The server is missing mods or reports wrong files
Download the server pack for the exact release again and extract it into a clean folder. Do not try to repair the installation by selecting random files from a client profile. If you have a valuable world, keep it in a separate backup while rebuilding the server files.

Compare the full Abyssal Ascent release, Minecraft version, Forge version, and client profile on both sides. Remove old launcher profiles that can cause a player to start the wrong line. A 1.19.2 client cannot join a 1.20.1 server, and a 0.2.2.x client should not be treated as equivalent to 0.2.3.
The server lags or becomes unstable
- Start from the project’s reported 4 GB allocation rather than immediately assigning 8 GB or more.
- Check whether the host is swapping, overheating, or sharing CPU and memory with other services.
- Reduce view distance and simulation distance temporarily and test the same player activity again.
- Review logs for repeated errors, failed chunk generation, or a mod repeatedly exhausting resources.
- Adjust
user_jvm_args.txtin small increments and measure the result after each restart.
Friends cannot connect
- Confirm that the server is running and that a local player can join.
- Confirm the port in
server.properties. - Allow the server through the host firewall.
- Forward that exact port to the host’s current private LAN address.
- Have remote players use the correct reachable address and include a non-default port explicitly.
- Check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, which can block inbound connections.
Pre-launch checklist
- One exact Abyssal Ascent release selected for the whole group.
- Matching Minecraft and Forge versions recorded.
- Dedicated server pack downloaded for that release when available.
- 64-bit Java 17 verified with
java -version. - Server extracted into its own folder.
run.batorrun.shused instead of an improvised launch command.- Memory set in
user_jvm_args.txt, beginning near 4 GB unless monitoring justifies a change. - EULA accepted in the generated
eula.txt. server.propertiesand theconfigdirectory reviewed.- Firewall and router forwarding configured for the actual server port.
- Clients installed with the identical pack, Minecraft, Forge, and required configuration.
- A clean backup made before any update or world migration.
Bottom line
The reliable Abyssal Ascent setup is version discipline rather than a special command: choose one release, use its server pack, run the supplied Forge script on 64-bit Java 17, accept the EULA, configure the generated files, and make clients match exactly. Start with the project’s 4 GB memory guidance, monitor before changing it, and test networking locally before exposing the server to friends. If maintaining Java, backups, and router rules is not practical, a managed host with a tested one-click pack installer removes much of that operational work, but you should still verify the available release and backup controls.
