Above the scroll means the part of a webpage visible in the initial viewport, before someone scrolls. It is another way of saying above the fold. The exact boundary changes with the screen, browser window, and interface, so it is not a fixed pixel height.

What does “above the scroll” mean?

It refers to the content a person can see when a page first appears, without scrolling. When precision matters, “visible in the initial viewport” is clearer than either shorthand phrase.

The expression adapts the newspaper term “above the fold”: the upper part of a folded paper remained visible when it was displayed for sale. In web design, the phrase describes the browser’s immediately viewable area. The preview of The Graphic Designer’s Electronic-Media Manual lists “above the scroll” as a variant of “above the fold.”

Is there a fixed “fold” on a screen?

No. The visible area varies with the device and viewport: a phone, tablet, laptop, desktop monitor, or television can show different amounts of a page. Even on the same device, changing the browser-window size can move the boundary. The term is a useful shorthand, not a universal coordinate or a specific number of pixels.

How should designers use the idea?

Make the page’s purpose and essential context understandable in the initial view, while making it clear that more content continues below. Do not treat the fold as a wall or try to cram every important detail into a fixed-height strip; the viewport varies, and readers may scroll.

Spacing matters, too. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative’s “Use White Spacing” cognitive accessibility pattern cautions: “Do not add so much white space that important content cannot be seen above the scroll.” The page says the underlying content was first published on 29 April 2021 and the interface was posted in January 2022.

Is designing above the scroll outdated?

There is no single rule that every page must place all key material in the first view. A 2015 UXPin book excerpt, Immersive Interactions, calls “designing above the scroll” archaic and describes sites that deliberately offer limited information at first to encourage continued browsing. That is the author’s design perspective, not a universal standard or a current usability finding.

The University of West Florida’s “Maximizing Your Program Page Content” offers one institutional example: it uses “Above the Scroll” for a section containing a title, teaser, and primary program description, with attention to readability and search visibility. It is an example of local practice, not a general requirement.
