AAMI Home and Contents insurance is governed by the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) that applies to your policy and the selections recorded on your Certificate of Insurance. It can cover household belongings against specified insured events, but the details depend on limits, exclusions, excesses and optional cover. AAMI’s current Home Contents PDS applies to new policies and renewals commencing on or after 24 January 2025.

What does AAMI Home and Contents insurance cover?

AAMI describes contents as household items you own, or are responsible for, and primarily use for domestic purposes. Examples include furniture, clothing, appliances, computers, tablets and phones. The policy can cover those belongings for insured events such as fire, theft, storms and lightning, subject to the PDS definitions, conditions and exclusions. An event appearing in a product summary does not mean every loss associated with it is covered.

AAMI’s product material describes covered contents as eligible for repair or replacement on a new-for-old basis. This remains subject to policy terms, limits and conditions; it is not a guarantee of unlimited replacement for every claim. The product material also describes legal liability cover for certain injury or property-damage claims arising at home. Check the PDS for its precise scope and applicable amount.

Where is the boundary between building and contents?

Building cover concerns the home and permanently attached elements. Contents insurance is for household belongings, not the home itself or its permanent fixtures. If you are unsure how an item is classified, check the definitions in your PDS rather than assuming it belongs under contents cover.

Which AAMI policy documents apply?

AAMI says its Home Contents PDS applies to new business and renewals commencing on or after 24 January 2025. If your policy began or renewed earlier, do not assume that this is the wording that governs it. Confirm the applicable policy documents for your start or renewal date.

The PDS sets out the policy terms; AAMI’s overview pages are summaries, not substitutes for that wording. Your Certificate of Insurance records customer-specific choices and details, including selected options and specified items. Read the two documents together: use the PDS to understand the rules and the certificate to verify what applies to your policy.

What optional cover can change?

AAMI lists optional covers that change the scope of protection. They are not automatically included: check your Certificate of Insurance for each selection, its limit and any applicable excess, and consult the PDS for the conditions. AAMI Contents Insurance

Option What AAMI describes What to verify
Accidental Damage at Home Optional cover for accidental loss or damage at home, for an extra premium. Whether it is selected and which conditions, limits and excess apply.
Contents with Flexible Limits Lets customers specify higher sums for selected valuable contents, for an additional premium. Specified items appear on the Certificate of Insurance. That each item is specified correctly and the certificate records the intended sum.
Extra Cover Portable Valuables Optional cover for specified valuables away from the insured address in Australia and New Zealand, subject to policy terms. AAMI says specified jewellery may be covered at home and away when the relevant optional cover is selected. Which items are specified, where they are covered, and their applicable limits and conditions.

These options address different questions: accidental damage versus loss from insured events, cover at home versus away, and whether higher limits are needed for particular valuables. AAMI’s description does not establish an individual premium or eligibility; those depend on the quote and circumstances.

What exclusions, limits and waiting periods should you check?

Flood waiting period

AAMI says flood cover is automatically included for current policies and cannot be removed, but flood is not insured during the first 72 hours after policy commencement, subject to limited exceptions. If you already hold a policy, check your Certificate of Insurance for any recorded limitation and the PDS for the applicable terms. AAMI Contents Insurance

Limits and excesses

AAMI gives spoiled food and medication as an example of a capped benefit: its product page states a maximum payment of $400 for spoilage due to an insured event. The policy’s claim circumstances and conditions still apply. Check other item-specific limits, your sum insured and each excess in the documents for your policy; a headline product description does not establish those customer-specific amounts.

Exclusions and policy wording

AAMI’s summary of updates for policies starting or renewing from 24 January 2025 highlights changes involving building works, hacking or cyber incidents, and rust or corrosion among general exclusions. It is a summary, not a complete exclusion list. The full PDS and its defined terms determine how exclusions apply. AAMI also notes temporary accommodation provisions for eligible tenants and strata-title owners; check the PDS for eligibility and conditions. How to check whether the cover suits your household

  1. Match the policy date. Find when your policy started or last renewed, then confirm which PDS applies. For policies commencing or renewing on or after 24 January 2025, AAMI identifies the current Home Contents PDS as applicable.
  2. Check the contents sum insured. Compare it with the belongings you would need to replace, keeping in mind that limits and policy conditions can affect a claim.
  3. Review valuable items. Check item-specific limits and whether selected valuables need Contents with Flexible Limits or Extra Cover Portable Valuables.
  4. Confirm options and excesses. Look at the Certificate of Insurance to see which optional covers were selected, which items are specified and what excesses apply.
  5. Read the clauses relevant to your circumstances. Use the PDS to check insured events, flood timing, exclusions, temporary accommodation provisions and any conditions that matter to your home or belongings.

AAMI also lists a Key Fact Sheet, Target Market Determination and Additional Information Guide alongside its policy documents. These can help explain the product, but the PDS and your Certificate of Insurance remain the documents to consult for the terms and selections that govern your cover.
