To report a deceased family member, use the UIDAI myAadhaar Reporting of Death of a Family Member service when the jurisdiction where the death was registered is connected to the portal. Keep the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and the demographic details requested on screen ready. The reporting family member must authenticate with their own Aadhaar.
Obtaining the death certificate first is recommended because it provides the Death Registration Number. UIDAI verifies the information before taking action, so submitting a report does not guarantee that the Aadhaar will be deactivated immediately. The published service description does not establish that a scanned certificate or a separate proof-of-relationship document must be uploaded.
What Aadhaar deactivation after death means
An Aadhaar number is not deactivated merely because a family member fills in an online form. UIDAI first checks the death information and the identity details supplied with the report. After verification, it may deactivate the number or take another action under its process.

“Where the Authority receives information regarding the death of an Aadhaar number holder including the Aadhaar number of the deceased individual, wherever available, the said information shall be verified in a manner as prescribed by the Authority, and upon such verification, the Aadhaar number shall be deactivated.”
UIDAI can receive death information from a person, seek it from the Registrar General of India or a State Chief Registrar, or obtain it through another entity in the Aadhaar ecosystem. The family-member service is therefore one reporting route, not the only way UIDAI can learn of a death.

Prepare the following before opening myAadhaar. The portal’s live prompts control what can actually be submitted, and they can change as integration expands.

Keep the original certificate or an accessible official record available while entering the Death Registration Number. Do not substitute a hospital reference, cremation receipt or an unrelated application number unless the registering authority identifies it as the death-registration number.
How to report a family member’s death on myAadhaar
- Obtain the death certificate. Contact the authority that registered the death and obtain the certificate or official death-registration record. Confirm the deceased person’s name and the Death Registration Number.
- Check the registration jurisdiction. Availability is tied to the State or Union Territory where the death was registered, not necessarily the address State or Union Territory shown in Aadhaar.
- Sign in to myAadhaar. Authenticate with the reporting family member’s own Aadhaar and open the service labelled Reporting of Death of a Family Member, if it is available for that jurisdiction.
- Enter the deceased person’s Aadhaar number. Use the number exactly as recorded. If it is unavailable, do not guess; check older official records or ask UIDAI how the portal handles a report without it.
- Enter the Death Registration Number. Copy it from the death certificate or registration record, preserving letters, digits and any punctuation the portal accepts.
- Provide the requested demographic details. These fields are used to match the death information with the Aadhaar record. Check spelling, date of birth and other values against official documents before submitting.
- Review and submit. Save the acknowledgement or reference shown by the portal, if one is provided. A submission confirms that information was reported; it is not a notice that deactivation has already occurred.
- Allow UIDAI’s validation to take place. UIDAI may verify the submitted details and then deactivate the Aadhaar or take another action. No ordinary-report processing time is stated in the published service description.
Where the online service is available
Availability has expanded in stages, so an old list of States or Union Territories can be misleading.

A person may have an Aadhaar address in one State while the death was registered in another. The relevant question is where the death record was registered. If the service is not offered for that jurisdiction, do not select a different State simply because it appears in the deceased person’s Aadhaar address.

What happens after you submit the report
Validation comes before deactivation
UIDAI’s wording makes verification a condition of deactivation. The service description does not promise instant deactivation, a fixed completion time or automatic acceptance. A pending report therefore does not prove that the Aadhaar remains active indefinitely, and a successful submission screen does not prove that it has already been disabled.
UIDAI may use other official information
Under the regulation and UIDAI’s service explanation, the Authority may obtain death information from registrars, another Aadhaar ecosystem entity or an individual. It can compare those records with the report submitted by the family member.
Keep records of what you submitted
Retain the death certificate, the Death Registration Number, the Aadhaar number if available and any portal acknowledgement. These records help explain a mismatch if UIDAI asks for clarification. Do not send original documents by post unless UIDAI specifically instructs you to do so.

Online family reporting, UIDAI-led information and erroneous deactivation

If a living person’s Aadhaar was wrongly deactivated
Act promptly if a living Aadhaar holder is treated as deceased. UIDAI’s July 2025 circular described a reactivation route in which the holder submits the prescribed application to the nearest Regional or State Office by post, email or in person. The office examines the request and calls the holder to a designated Aadhaar centre for supervised capture of the face, iris and fingerprints.
The readable July 2025 circular described a call within two weeks and a decision reported within 30 days after biometric submission. Those time periods belong to that circular and should not be treated as a guarantee for every case.

Information requested in the July 2025 form
- Aadhaar number
- Name, gender and date of birth
- Address, district and State
- Mobile number and email address, if available
- Signature or thumb impression
- Place and date
- Parent details when the Aadhaar holder is under 18
UIDAI’s memorandum index lists a newer reactivation procedure uploaded on 1 October 2026. The detailed file is not reproduced here, so the July 2025 form and timings may have changed. Before sending an application, obtain the latest instructions from UIDAI’s current memorandum or contact the UIDAI helpline at 1947. Ask the office which form, submission channel and biometric appointment rules apply now.

Common problems and practical checks
The service does not appear in myAadhaar
Confirm the State or Union Territory where the death was registered. The service rollout is based on that jurisdiction. If it is not integrated, use the current UIDAI contact route for guidance rather than entering a different jurisdiction.
The Death Registration Number is missing or rejected
Check the number against the death certificate and ask the registering authority to correct or clarify the record if the number is illegible or inconsistent. The portal’s field may reject spaces or punctuation; follow the format it displays. Do not invent a number.
The deceased person’s Aadhaar number is unavailable
Search official documents or records where the number may have been recorded. Because UIDAI’s release lists the Aadhaar number as report information “where available,” ask UIDAI how to proceed when it cannot be located. Do not submit another person’s number.

You are asked for a certificate upload or relationship proof
The published service description does not establish either item as a universal requirement. If the live portal requests one, follow that current instruction and use a document issued by the competent authority. A request shown by the current portal takes precedence over an older description.
You need confirmation that deactivation is complete
Keep the acknowledgement and contact UIDAI if the portal provides no status or if a financial, pension or estate process requires confirmation. Do not describe the Aadhaar as deactivated solely because the report was filed.
How many deceased Aadhaar numbers have been deactivated?
In a February 2026 announcement, UIDAI reported that more than 2.5 crore deceased persons’ Aadhaar numbers had been deactivated. That is a cumulative figure stated at that time, not a live counter or a promise about the current total.
