To report a family member’s death to UIDAI, use the “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” service on myAadhaar, if it is available for the State or Union Territory where the death was registered. Have the death certificate, the deceased person’s Aadhaar number and Death Registration Number ready. UIDAI authenticates and checks the information before deciding whether to deactivate the Aadhaar; submitting a report does not guarantee immediate deactivation.
What to prepare before reporting a death
UIDAI recommends obtaining the death certificate from the authority that registered the death before submitting a report. The death-reporting service asks the reporting family member to authenticate and provide the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and other demographic details. UIDAI’s 2025 announcement describes these requirements.
- Death certificate issued by the death-registering authority
- Deceased person’s Aadhaar number
- Death Registration Number
- The reporter’s ability to complete authentication and provide requested demographic details
UIDAI’s announcement does not provide a complete upload checklist or say that proof of relationship must always be submitted. Check the live myAadhaar form for any additional requirements that apply to your submission.

How to report a family member’s death on myAadhaar
- Obtain the death certificate. Get it from the authority that registered the death.
- Check that the service covers the death’s State/UT. Open myAadhaar and look for “Reporting of Death of a Family Member.” Availability has expanded over time, so verify it on the portal rather than relying on an older coverage figure.
- Complete the reporting form and authentication. Provide the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and the demographic details requested. Follow the current portal instructions for any further information or documents.
- Wait for UIDAI’s validation and decision. UIDAI checks the submitted information against its records and death-registration information. It then decides whether to deactivate the number.
UIDAI describes the outcome this way: “After due process of validation of the information submitted by the family member, further action is taken for the deactivation, or otherwise, of the Aadhaar number of the deceased person.” A submitted report is therefore not confirmation that deactivation has already occurred.

Check current availability for your State or UT
The service’s geographic coverage has changed since launch. UIDAI announced coverage for deaths registered in 24 States/UTs when the facility launched on 9 June 2025. A government announcement dated 26 November 2025 reported coverage in 25 States/UTs and said integration of the remaining States/UTs was underway. Those are dated snapshots, not a current state-by-state list. Confirm availability on myAadhaar for the relevant State/UT before starting.
Family reporting is one way a deceased person’s Aadhaar may be identified; it is not the only route. In November 2025, the government said UIDAI had also sourced deceased-person data from the Registrar General of India, States/UTs, the Public Distribution System and the National Social Assistance Program, while exploring additional institutional sources.

Why an older UIDAI policy may mention different documents
An older UIDAI Data Update Policy described a different process that involved a household record, such as a ration card, to establish a relationship. That historical process is not the current myAadhaar portal checklist. Use the live service’s requirements rather than treating the older policy as instructions for today’s report. Read the older UIDAI Data Update Policy.

If a living person is wrongly reported deceased
UIDAI’s official memorandum listing reviewed 9 October 2026 identifies a newer reactivation procedure uploaded on 1 October 2026. The details of that newer procedure are not established here, so do not rely on older instructions without checking UIDAI’s current document.

A previous UIDAI circular, dated 7 July 2025, said that a living Aadhaar holder could submit a reactivation request to the nearest UIDAI Regional/State Office by post, email or in person. It described an office review followed by supervised submission of full biometrics—face, iris and fingerprints—at a designated Aadhaar centre, and a communication of the disposal status within 30 days after biometric submission. Because UIDAI’s listing now identifies a newer procedure, consult the current UIDAI memorandum for the applicable steps and timelines. Check UIDAI’s circulars and memoranda.
