When one AI agent calls another, a circuit breaker is a caller-side policy that stops repeated requests to an unhealthy remote agent. It can fail fast or invoke a deliberately designed fallback while the dependency recovers. It does not come from the A2A protocol itself: A2A defines communication and task handling, while your application chooses breaker thresholds, timeouts, retries, state scope, and fallback behavior.
What changes when an agent calls another agent?
The called agent is an independent system. With A2A, agents can communicate and collaborate without exposing their internal memory, tools, or proprietary logic. That makes the remote agent a dependency whose availability and behavior your caller must handle explicitly. A2A’s specification describes the communication contract, not the reliability policy around it.
A remote interaction also has two layers: the network exchange and the task being performed. The cited A2A specification describes HTTP(S), JSON-RPC 2.0 request and response payloads, and server-sent events for supported streaming and task-resubscription scenarios. A successful transport response does not necessarily mean the task is complete, and a local wait timeout does not prove the remote task failed. The protocol specification describes task state and asynchronous updates; clients should preserve task identity and interpret updates according to the task lifecycle.

A circuit breaker watches for selected failures or timeouts and changes whether the caller sends more requests to a dependency. The usual model has three states: closed, where calls pass through; open, where calls are short-circuited; and half-open, where a limited recovery check is permitted. Exact thresholds and state transitions are implementation choices, not A2A requirements. AWS Prescriptive Guidance explains the circuit-breaker pattern.

- Wide range of applications: Caravans, yachts, off-road vehicles, winches, control electrics, power tools, power sockets, all kinds of generators, electric motors, UPS, electric heating appliances, etc.Easy to Mount in Any Orientation
A breaker is not a retry loop. Bounded retries with backoff may help with transient faults; a breaker suppresses repeated calls when failures suggest a dependency is unhealthy. The two policies can coexist, but retries must fit within the caller’s overall deadline and must be safe for the operation. AWS’s retry and backoff guidance discusses retry handling.
- It can address: repeated transport failures, timeouts, or other explicitly classified dependency failures.
- It cannot establish: whether a successful answer is truthful, safe, or semantically correct. Those require separate application checks.
- It does not replace: authentication, authorization, or network security controls.
Choose failure handling that matches the task
Set an end-to-end deadline
Give the delegated operation a total deadline, then keep connection, response, and task-wait limits within that budget. There is no universal timeout value in the cited protocol or guidance; choose limits for your application’s task and user experience. For asynchronous tasks, distinguish a timeout while waiting locally from evidence that the remote task has ended.

- 3 Minute DIY Install: Hardware included, 2 x 6 1/4" AWG copper lugs, 4 x copper flat washers, 2 x mounting screws, stud size: 1/4" - 28
- Versatile Uses: 12V - 48V protects trolling motors, battery, solar panel, car audio and more
Classify failures deliberately
Connection failures and timeouts are plausible breaker signals. A rejected task, invalid input, authorization failure, or valid business response such as “cannot do this” may call for different handling rather than counting as evidence that the endpoint is unhealthy. The breaker guidance identifies failures and timeouts as relevant triggers but does not prescribe a universal classifier. AWS’s pattern guidance leaves the policy to the implementation.

Retry only when safe and within budget
Use a bounded retry policy with backoff only when the operation can safely be repeated and the remaining deadline allows it. Task-creating calls deserve particular care: establish how the client can identify or reconcile the original task before retrying, so a retry does not unintentionally create duplicate work. A2A task lifecycle features provide task context, but duplicate prevention and reconciliation remain application design concerns. The specification covers task lifecycle and updates; AWS’s retry guidance covers bounded retry behavior.

Define the open-circuit outcome
When the breaker is open, return a clear temporary-unavailable result, route to an approved alternative, or use a task-appropriate fallback. Do not silently present stale or partial output as a completed answer. A fallback should not be assumed to reproduce the remote agent’s output or actions safely; validate it for the task.
Decisions that shape the breaker
| Decision | Options | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Breaker scope | Per remote agent, endpoint, or dependency class | A broad scope can let one unhealthy dependency affect unrelated tasks; a narrow scope can isolate health more precisely. |
| Failure classification | Transport and timeout failures only, selected remote errors, or broader task failures | Counting every unsuccessful task can confuse business outcomes with dependency availability. |
| Retry policy | No retry, bounded retry with backoff, or asynchronous resumption | Retries may help with transient faults but add latency and load; task semantics determine whether repeating work is safe. AWS retry guidance and A2A task lifecycle details address these distinct concerns. |
| Open-state behavior | Fail fast, use an alternate agent, or use a task-specific fallback | The result must be clear and safe for the user. |
| Recovery check | Timed half-open probe or another controlled health signal | A limited check can test recovery without sending unrestricted traffic to a recovering service. |
| State location | In-process or coordinated across caller replicas | Local state isolates decisions to one process; coordination across replicas adds consistency and operational considerations. A2A does not specify breaker state storage. |
Observe resilience separately from task results
For each delegated call, record the remote dependency identity, task identifier when available, breaker state transition, timeout or failure category, retry count, and fallback decision. Avoid logging secrets or unnecessary user context. These are operational recommendations, not fields required by A2A.

Security is a separate layer. A circuit breaker limits repeated calls; it does not authenticate a peer, authorize a task, or secure traffic. Google Cloud documents one platform-specific approach using VPC networking and firewall and service-access controls for agent and tool traffic; it is an example, not an A2A requirement. Google Cloud’s private-networking patterns describe that deployment approach.

A2A is aimed at communication and collaboration between independent agents; MCP addresses how AI applications connect to tools and context. They concern different integration boundaries and can be used together. Neither standard supplies your application’s circuit-breaker policy.
