For demanding games on the A20 Pro iPhone generation—the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in current coverage—start with Game Mode enabled whenever the game supports it, keep Low Power Mode off when maximum frame rate matters, and use Adaptive Power for battery management between or around sessions. Apple says Low Power Mode can cap ProMotion displays at 60 frames per second, while Adaptive Power can reduce brightness, restrict background activity and make system-level performance adjustments without managing performance during games running with Game Mode.
Those choices involve trade-offs rather than a hidden “gaming” switch that guarantees a particular frame rate. The A20 Pro’s published gains are generation-over-generation claims, and independent tests show different results for the Pro and Pro Max. Actual performance still depends on the game, graphics settings, session length, temperature, display mode and remaining battery.
The best starting configuration

- Low Power Mode: Leave it off for high-refresh competitive play or visually demanding games. Turn it on only when preserving the remaining charge is more important than maximum frame rate.
- Adaptive Power: Enable it when you want iOS to reduce background power use during the rest of the day. Apple says it does not manage performance while you are playing a game with Game Mode on.
- Brightness: Use the lowest level that remains comfortable. This is a battery measure, not a guaranteed frames-per-second boost.
- Background work: Close or pause unnecessary activity when practical, particularly downloads, cloud syncing and video recording.
- Heat: Take breaks when the phone becomes uncomfortably hot and remove a heat-trapping case during extended play if doing so is safe and practical.
This setup preserves the display’s available refresh rate for games that can use it, while allowing Adaptive Power to save energy outside the maximum-performance portion of the session.

Game Mode: the performance-first setting
What it changes
Game Mode is the primary setting to favor when a supported game needs the most consistent input response. Apple’s Adaptive Power documentation specifically excludes maximum-performance activities such as games with Game Mode on from its performance management. In practical terms, Adaptive Power can continue to help with ordinary background use, but it is not intended to downshift an active Game Mode session.
How to use it
Open a game that supports Game Mode and verify that Game Mode is enabled when iOS presents the game’s gaming controls. The exact controls can vary by game and iOS interface context, so do not assume every title exposes the same option. If a game does not support Game Mode, the phone cannot use that feature to prioritize the session; use the display, battery and heat practices in the rest of this guide instead.
What Game Mode does not promise
Game Mode does not establish a universal frame-rate target. A title may be locked to 30 or 60 fps, offer a variable mode, or reduce detail as the device warms. No published source in the available coverage supplies a universal A20 Pro gaming frame-rate guarantee.

Why competitive players should normally disable it
Apple states that on iPhone models with ProMotion display technology, Low Power Mode limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second. It may also make some tasks slower. That is a direct conflict with a high-refresh game or a title whose controls benefit from the lowest possible display latency.
A 60-fps display limit does not mean every game will run at exactly 60 fps, nor does it prove that the game engine itself is capped at 60. It means the ProMotion display will not refresh above that rate while Low Power Mode is active. The game can still be limited by its own settings, workload or thermal behavior.
When enabling it makes sense
Turn Low Power Mode on when the remaining battery is more important than peak responsiveness—for example, when travelling, waiting without a charger, or finishing a short session before you can recharge. Treat it as a battery-preservation fallback, not as a performance optimization.

Because Low Power Mode can affect more than the display, expect slower background or system tasks as well. If a game feels less fluid after enabling it, check this setting first before changing in-game graphics.
Adaptive Power: battery savings without a Game Mode penalty
Where to enable it
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Power Mode.
- Select Adaptive Power.
Apple says Adaptive Power can lower screen brightness, limit background activity and make performance adjustments to conserve power through the day. It can also turn on Low Power Mode automatically at 20 percent battery.
Allow time for it to learn
Apple’s support information says Adaptive Power needs at least seven days to learn your charging habits before it engages its automatic behavior. Do not judge it from a single gaming session immediately after turning it on. The feature is designed for day-long battery management, not for producing a measurable frame-rate increase inside a particular game.
Does Adaptive Power hurt gaming?
Apple says Adaptive Power does not manage performance while you use features that require maximum performance, including playing games with Game Mode on. That makes it compatible with a Game Mode-first setup. The qualification matters: a game without Game Mode support is not covered by that explicit exclusion, so monitor how the title behaves and disable Adaptive Power temporarily if you notice an unacceptable change and need to isolate the cause.
Brightness and background activity
Lower brightness saves energy
Screen brightness is one of the simplest variables to adjust. Lowering it reduces display power draw, especially during a long session. Adaptive Power and Low Power Mode both use brightness reduction as part of their battery-saving behavior, according to Apple. The trade-off is visibility: dimming the display too far can make dark scenes, targets and interface text harder to see, which can hurt play more than it helps.

Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads and other activity that competes for network, storage and processor time. Adaptive Power limits background activity automatically as part of its design, but manually stopping an unusually heavy task can prevent needless heat and battery use before you start playing.

Do not treat background cleanup as a guaranteed FPS fix. It reduces avoidable power consumption and contention; the game’s engine, resolution, frame-rate cap and thermal state remain the dominant factors for in-game performance.
Find the apps consuming your battery
Use Settings > Battery after a session to see which apps used power. Apple says iOS reports each app’s proportion of battery use and identifies background activity. This helps distinguish a game that is simply demanding from another app that kept working while you played.
Look for these patterns:
- The game dominates usage during the session: high power draw is expected for a demanding 3D title; adjust in-game resolution, effects or frame-rate options if available.
- Another app shows substantial background activity: stop its sync, upload or download before the next session and recheck the report.
- Battery falls quickly while the screen is dim: network activity, heat, a high rendering workload or a worn battery may be involved; the Battery report narrows the next check.
The report is diagnostic rather than a benchmark. It does not convert battery percentage into a guaranteed number of gaming hours.

Why results change over time
Sustained performance depends on the model and workload. A brief benchmark result cannot establish what will happen after an hour of rendering, wireless communication and charging. As the phone warms, iOS or the game may adjust behavior to protect the device. The available coverage does not provide a universal temperature threshold or frame-rate promise for A20 Pro gaming.
Practical steps
- Play on a hard, open surface rather than under bedding or clothing that traps heat.
- Remove a thick or heat-retaining case during a long session when the phone can be handled safely without it.
- Avoid charging in a way that adds unnecessary heat during the most demanding play; if you must charge, keep the phone ventilated.
- Take a break if the handset becomes uncomfortably hot, if touch response changes, or if the game begins stuttering after a previously stable start.
These are risk-reduction steps, not promises of a particular temperature or FPS improvement.
Optional physical cooling
An iPhone-compatible game controller can reduce the need to hold the touchscreen and may be more comfortable for long sessions. A clip-on or other phone cooler is an optional thermal accessory. Neither is a required settings change, and no Apple setting or published result here guarantees that a cooler will raise frame rate or prevent throttling.

What A20 Pro performance evidence actually shows
Apple’s generation-over-generation claims
MacObserver’s September 2026 review records Apple-published comparisons for the A20 Pro generation:

Solar Bay Unlimited is a synthetic test. Its frame-rate figures are not guaranteed in-game FPS, and the stability percentages describe that test’s behavior rather than every game or session.

The independent results show a higher Solar Bay Unlimited result and stability score for the iPhone 18 Pro Max than for the iPhone 18 Pro in that test. The Pro Max recorded 67.9 fps, a score of 17,850 and 79.4% stability; the Pro recorded 61.93 fps, 16,288 and 62.8% stability.

Those figures support a test-specific sustained-performance advantage for the Pro Max, not a universal ranking for all games. Screen size, thermal design and battery capacity are relevant decision factors, but the cited coverage does not provide a complete gaming-runtime measurement for either model. Choose the Pro Max for its larger display and the cited test result only if those attributes matter to you; do not assume the larger model guarantees a fixed FPS lead in every title.

Real games and battery-life claims
TechRadar reported that Real Flight Simulator, Wuthering Waves and Genshin Impact ran smoothly in its testing and that heat was distributed better than on the prior generation. “Smoothly” is a reviewer observation under that review’s conditions, not a universal setting recommendation or benchmark guarantee.
The same coverage reported Apple’s video-playback claims of up to 36 hours for iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for iPhone 18 Pro Max. Those are video-playback figures, not gaming-runtime results. A 3D game can consume power faster because it keeps the GPU, CPU, display and often the network active, so do not convert the playback claim into an expected number of gaming hours.
A repeatable session checklist
- Install the game and iOS updates before a demanding session, then restart if an update has just completed.
- Open Settings > Battery and check whether another app is performing heavy background work.
- Set a comfortable but not excessive brightness level.
- Open the game and confirm Game Mode is active when the title supports it.
- Ensure Low Power Mode is off if high-refresh or maximum-FPS play is the goal.
- Leave Adaptive Power enabled if you want all-day battery management; its performance exclusion applies explicitly to supported Game Mode sessions.
- Play in a ventilated position, watch for uncomfortable heat and take a break rather than continuing through severe warming.
- Afterward, review Settings > Battery to identify the game’s share of use and any background activity.
Troubleshooting common complaints
“The game feels capped at 60 fps.”
Check Low Power Mode first. Apple documents a 60-fps ProMotion limit while it is enabled. Turn it off, then verify the game’s own frame-rate setting and whether the title supports Game Mode.
“Adaptive Power changed my game.”
Confirm whether Game Mode is active. Apple excludes Game Mode gaming from Adaptive Power’s performance management. If the title does not support Game Mode, temporarily disable Adaptive Power for a controlled comparison and check brightness, background activity and heat as well.
“Performance starts well and drops later.”
Suspect sustained workload or heat rather than a single toggle. Lower in-game effects or resolution if the title offers those controls, improve ventilation, remove a heat-trapping case and pause if the phone becomes uncomfortably hot. No universal temperature or FPS threshold is established for this generation.
“My battery estimate does not match the advertised hours.”
The 36-hour and 45-hour figures are Apple video-playback claims, not gaming tests. Use the Battery screen’s app breakdown to measure your own workload instead of treating the playback numbers as a gaming guarantee.
Bottom line for A20 Pro gaming
Use Game Mode for supported games, keep Low Power Mode off when frame rate and ProMotion responsiveness matter, and enable Adaptive Power for background battery savings without a documented Game Mode performance penalty. Adjust brightness and background work to reduce drain, inspect Settings > Battery after sessions, and manage heat with ventilation and breaks. The A20 Pro generation is faster in Apple’s comparisons, while independent synthetic tests show the iPhone 18 Pro Max ahead of the Pro in one sustained workload; neither result guarantees a particular game’s FPS or battery runtime.
