Olivia Moore’s perspective on consumer AI appears in two distinct a16z publications: a June 2025 podcast conversation about consumer technology in the age of AI and a December 2025 article coauthored with Justine Moore that directly examines consumer AI products and the startup landscape. The December article’s central argument is that dominant general-purpose assistants can attract enormous audiences while leaving room for focused consumer applications. Its statistics are dated and attributed claims, not current 2026 measurements or independent product tests.
Which Olivia Moore source is about consumer AI?
There are two relevant a16z publications, and they should not be treated as the same interview or article.
- “The State of Consumer Tech in the Age of AI”, published June 6, 2025, is a podcast conversation with a16z General Partner Erik Torenberg and Consumer team members Anish Acharya, Olivia Moore, Justine Moore, and Bryan Kim. Its topics include AI-native consumer tools, companion apps, consumer spending, the prospect of an AI-powered social graph, and the importance of speed and iteration. The episode description asks, “Why does it feel like breakout consumer apps have slowed down?”
- “State of Consumer AI 2025: Product Hits, Misses, and What’s Next”, published December 18, 2025, is a written article by Olivia Moore and Justine Moore. It is the closer match for the market comparisons and startup thesis usually meant by “Olivia Moore on the state of consumer AI.”
A later a16z discussion, “Where Does Consumer AI Stand at the End of 2025?”, was published December 29, 2025. It offers additional podcast framing around concentration, multimodal workflows, product design, templates, and distribution; it is separate from both earlier publications.

What the December article says about the consumer AI market
Moore and Moore describe a market where general-purpose assistants have achieved substantial reach and usage concentration. At the same time, they argue that those assistants do not serve every consumer need equally well. Their thesis is that a product built around a particular task, audience, or interaction can offer a more deliberate experience than a broad assistant, even as model providers continue adding consumer features.

The article frames this as an opportunity for builders: “This leaves huge white space for founders who are building dedicated consumer experiences.” That is the authors’ investment perspective, not a neutral forecast or proof that every focused app can succeed. It is also not a claim that general assistants will stop expanding; the tension between expanding platforms and focused products is central to the argument.
What the article’s usage figures do—and do not—show
The December 18, 2025 article presents estimates and comparative measures from different sources. The comparisons describe particular metrics, audiences, and measurement windows; they should not be collapsed into a single verdict that one assistant is categorically “better.”

These figures are claims presented in the 2025 article. The underlying commercial datasets are not independently verified here, and the available source material does not establish updated 2026 values. Their most useful lesson is methodological: reach, engagement, retention, growth, and paid adoption answer different questions. A product can grow quickly from a smaller base while another remains larger or retains users at a higher rate.
Where focused consumer apps fit
The article’s examples span products oriented around making, creating, or interacting—not just asking a general assistant for information. It names Replit, Gamma, Character AI, Suno, ElevenLabs, Manus, Krea, and Lovable as examples of dedicated consumer experiences. These are examples used to illustrate the authors’ argument, not endorsements or a ranking.

The distinction is about product shape rather than a strict divide between “AI” and “non-AI.” A general assistant offers breadth and can add new capabilities within an existing interface. A focused application can instead organize the interface, workflow, and output around a narrower user goal. That focus may make a task easier to start and complete; it does not guarantee better results, durable demand, or a defensible business.
- Breadth versus workflow: A general assistant can handle many kinds of requests; a dedicated product can guide a user through a particular creation or task flow.
- Existing distribution versus standalone experience: A feature inside a widely used assistant benefits from an established destination, while a separate application has to make its own value and entry point clear.
- Platform expansion versus product focus: Model providers can add features across their products, while application builders can concentrate on a narrower audience or use case. The two approaches can coexist, and their success depends on execution and user needs.
How to interpret Moore’s perspective
The December article is useful as a snapshot of a16z’s view of consumer AI at the end of 2025, particularly its distinction between concentrated general-assistant usage and opportunities for specialized experiences. It should be read with its perspective in mind: the article’s startup thesis is written by investors, and the cited usage figures are reported comparisons rather than independent evaluations of product quality.
