After a year of self-hosting free and open-source software (FOSS), the biggest surprises are often not installation problems but the recurring work of keeping services secure, available, recoverable, and understandable. Updates, backups, monitoring, and documenting decisions become part of running the software—not optional extras.

Why self-hosting feels different after the initial setup

Installing an application is a milestone, not the end of the work. Once a service matters to you or other people, you are also responsible for operating the environment it depends on. Supabase’s official self-hosting documentation is one concrete example: it assigns the operator provisioning and maintenance, security hardening and updates, service configuration, database maintenance, availability, backups and disaster recovery, monitoring, and uptime.

That list is not a universal specification for every FOSS project. It is a useful way to see the layers that can sit beneath an application. The precise workload depends on what you run, how you deploy it, and how much disruption you can tolerate. Community posts asking about a year of self-hosting and operational headaches show the concerns people raise, but they are anecdotes, not a representative measure of how often problems occur.

Updates are change management, not just a button

An update can change application behavior, database schemas, or assumptions embedded in your local configuration. Automatically applying every release may save routine effort, but it can also make a breaking change before you have understood its effect or prepared a recovery path.

  • Know what is installed. Record the application version and how it was deployed.
  • Read release notes before consequential upgrades. Check for migration steps, compatibility changes, and configuration changes.
  • Keep data backups separate from deployment files. A copy of configuration does not necessarily preserve databases or uploaded files.
  • Plan recovery before changing production. Know how you would restore data or return to a working version if the upgrade fails.

Supabase’s supported self-hosting updater illustrates why update procedures can be project-specific. Its documentation describes tracking a base version and using a three-way merge to compare upstream changes with local files; conflicts and manual steps for breaking changes may need attention. The guide also says the updater backs up configuration, not Postgres or Storage data. That behavior applies to Supabase’s updater, not every FOSS update tool. Supabase’s update guide

Backups matter only if you can restore them

A backup is a recovery plan in practice only when it contains the right things and you know how to use it. Identify which data and configuration are irreplaceable, preserve secrets and encryption keys securely, keep a suitable copy away from the server, and rehearse a restore. Hetzner’s self-hosting guide recommends having backups running before production and testing a restore before it is needed. Hetzner’s self-hosting guide

Back up the whole service, not just its name

Depending on the application, recovery may require persistent data, deployment configuration, database contents, uploaded files, and keys or secrets. NetBird’s backup documentation provides a specific example: its backup contents include deployment configuration and state, including the management database and keys; optional certificate data is handled differently because certificates can be reissued. Contents vary with enabled components and database choice. NetBird also warns that its archive contains encryption keys and configuration secrets and should be protected like a private key. Choose a destination that survives a host failure

An external hard drive can serve as one backup destination, but a drive kept beside the server may share the same risks from theft, fire, or other physical damage. Consider whether an additional offsite copy is appropriate for the data and recovery needs. Whichever destination you choose, confirm that the backup actually runs, covers the intended files and data, and can be restored.

Quiet failures need monitoring

Some problems do not announce themselves until someone tries to use the service. Hetzner identifies unavailable services, expiring certificates, and storage filling up as issues worth monitoring and alerting on. Useful checks include whether a service responds, whether disk space is shrinking, and whether certificates are approaching expiry.

Access failures can also come from the network around the application. Hetzner’s guide points to ports, firewalls, and DNS as basic concepts that help explain why a service may not be reachable. When diagnosing an incident, NetBird’s troubleshooting documentation recommends checking service status and logs. NetBird’s troubleshooting guide

Document the decisions you will otherwise forget

Months later, a working configuration may be difficult to understand if nobody recorded why it was chosen. Hetzner recommends documenting decisions because their rationale can fade over time. Keep a concise, private operations note with the details needed to maintain or recover your setup:

  • Ports, firewall rules, and relevant DNS settings

Decide what is still worth self-hosting

There is no single right hosting choice for every service. A USENIX Security 2023 study describes variation in self-hosters’ motivations, use cases, setups, administrative capability, and social context. That diversity matters: one person’s worthwhile control can be another person’s unwanted maintenance burden. USENIX Security 2023 study

For each workload, weigh the following factors:

  • Control and data custody: How valuable is direct control over the software and its data?
  • Availability: How disruptive would downtime be, and can you provide the response the service needs?
  • Time and expertise: Are you willing and able to handle updates, monitoring, database care, and recovery?
  • Recovery needs: Can you restore the service and its data within a timeframe that works for you?
  • What managed hosting would take over: Identify which operating duties a provider would actually assume and which remain yours.

Managed hosting can reduce the amount of infrastructure you maintain, but it may not fit the control or autonomy that motivated you to self-host. Make the decision workload by workload; keeping one service self-hosted does not obligate you to run everything yourself.
