Reema Singh built a rough version of an idea over a weekend and showed it to her team the following Monday, before anyone could dismiss it without seeing it. The prototype did not win everyone over: one teammate called the idea terrible, another found it interesting, and a third began using it. That mix of reactions helped the team discard most of the concept and keep the part people understood.
What Singh built—and why
In her DEV Community account, Singh describes becoming frustrated when people decided an idea would not work before they had seen it. Rather than keep arguing about a concept in the abstract, she made a rough version over a weekend and brought it to the team the next Monday.

For Singh, the value was not proving that the whole idea was right. She wrote, “I wasn’t trying to prove everyone wrong. I just wanted to replace ‘I think’ with ‘look.’” A prototype gave the team something concrete to inspect and respond to, including through actual use.
What this story does—and does not—show
Singh’s account illustrates one practical advantage of a rough prototype: it can make a discussion less hypothetical. A teammate can react to what is present, try it, or reveal which part makes sense. That can expose a useful fragment even when the broader proposal is rejected.
It is a personal account, not evidence that building first always leads to better decisions. The initial negative reaction did not settle the question, and neither did the positive response. What mattered in this story was the combination of reactions and the team’s decision about what to retain.

- Make only enough to show the idea. Singh describes a rough version, not a finished product. The point is to create something people can inspect, not to polish every detail.
- Ask for reactions to the thing in front of them. Specific observations about what a person understood or tried are more actionable than a vote on an abstract pitch.
- Notice use as well as commentary. In Singh’s story, one teammate began using the prototype without offering a verbal endorsement. That behavior was part of the feedback.
- Be willing to keep only a piece. The team did not preserve the entire original concept. Its outcome was to discard most of it and retain one understandable part.
Singh’s closing thought is modest: “Sometimes that’s all a prototype needs to do.” In this account, it made the idea visible long enough for the team to find what, if anything, was worth keeping.
