Yes—a desktop vinyl cutter can also draw or write when the machine supports a compatible pen or tool and its software workflow. The right choice depends on the specific model, the materials and project sizes you need, and whether you want matless loading or other tool functions.
What a drawing-and-cutting machine does
A craft cutter follows a digital design to cut materials such as adhesive vinyl, iron-on material, and cardstock. With a compatible pen or drawing tool, some models can also trace designs, write lettering, or add drawn details. These functions are model-specific: check the manufacturer’s supported tools and software workflow rather than assuming every cutter can draw.
For example, Cricut identifies writing and drawing among the Maker 4’s functions and says a fine-point pen is included. Brother describes its ScanNCut DX SDX225 as supporting both cutting and drawing. Those examples establish that the combination exists, not that every model has the same tools or setup. What to compare before you buy
- Material support: Check the exact materials and thicknesses listed for the model. A manufacturer’s material count or compatibility claim applies to that model, not to the whole category.
- Work area and project length: Match the machine’s supported work size to your designs. Long decals, signs, and repeated cuts can have different requirements from small labels or cards.
- Mat or matless loading: Find out which materials can be loaded without a mat and which require one. Matless use may depend on the material type, model, and manufacturer’s material system.
- Drawing tools: Confirm whether pens are included, whether a holder or adapter is needed, and which drawing tools and software functions the machine supports.
- Software and device workflow: Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for designing, sending, and drawing or cutting from your intended device. Device support, offline use, and software terms are not established uniformly across these models.
- Included accessories: Compare the actual bundle contents for the region and listing you plan to buy. Mats, blades, pens, and other tools may be included or sold separately.

Vinyl decals and labels
Start with the dimensions of the largest design you expect to make and whether you want to use a mat. Then confirm that the exact vinyl type is supported and whether the model’s workflow needs a mat for it. A machine’s ability to cut vinyl does not guarantee that every vinyl brand or finish can be loaded the same way.

Cards, lettering, and drawn details
Look for explicit writing or drawing support, then confirm the compatible pen and whether the pen is included. A machine may draw with a pen while also supporting cutting, but those are distinct tool operations: choose the correct tool and set up the design in the supported software workflow.
Thicker materials or mixed projects
Do not infer thickness limits from a general material count. Check the model’s material guidance and the required blade or tool. For instance, Cricut describes a separately sold Deep Cutting Tool for the Explore 5 for materials such as foam and rubber sheets; that does not establish what another cutter can handle.

Sticker projects have a separate print-and-cut constraint
Print-then-cut means printing a design first and then asking the cutter to detect markings and cut around it. Cricut’s guidance says reflective, glossy, or dark materials can interfere with its sensor markings. It names certain Cricut printable vinyl and sticker products as compatible and warns that dark, high-gloss, or holographic third-party materials may reduce scan accuracy. Plan for the tools and consumables
The machine is only part of a working setup. Depending on the project and model, you may also need the right vinyl, a compatible mat, a compatible pen or pen holder, blades, and weeding tools for removing unwanted pieces from a cut design. Match accessories to the exact model and verify bundle contents before purchase; compatibility and included items vary.
