firstQuartile can appear under <NonLinearAds> in IAB CTV signaling examples, but valid markup does not prove that a CTV player will schedule or fire the event. Check the VAST structure, whether the creative has a meaningful duration, and the target player’s runtime behavior as three separate questions.

Does firstQuartile belong under <NonLinearAds>?

It can: the IAB Tech Lab’s May 2026 CTV Ad Format Signaling Proposal includes examples that declare firstQuartile, midpoint, thirdQuartile, and complete beneath <NonLinearAds>. That is evidence that the pattern appears in an official proposal; it does not establish support in every VAST version, validator, or deployed player. Check the applicable VAST version, schema, and format guidance for the implementation you are working with. IAB Tech Lab’s CTV Ad Format Signaling Proposal

A declaration such as <Tracking event="firstQuartile"> is tracking data in a VAST response. Schema acceptance answers whether the markup is acceptable to the relevant validation rules. It does not answer whether a player will treat the declaration as a schedulable event or send its tracking URL during playback.

Why can a valid tag still produce no quartile event?

Quartile tracking is time-based: the player needs a meaningful creative timeline against which to determine when a quarter has elapsed. The IAB VAST CTV Ad Portfolio guidance says Duration should be included whenever the nonlinear experience’s duration is known, and requires it for video and interactive CTV Ad Portfolio creatives when quartile or other time-based tracking is expected. A static-image overlay may not have a conventional video playhead or a known duration when the VAST response is assembled. The guidance allows Duration to be omitted for static-image units when that duration is not known at response time, and describes other measurement events supported by the integration. Do not assume a static overlay’s time on screen is equivalent to a video quartile.

The CTV portfolio extension distinguishes standard NonLinear tracking from CTV-specific tracking events, and is intended to signal format, creative, and tracking information. Follow the relevant signaling guidance for the creative structure, including format-specific fields such as plcmt or pos when applicable; then verify what the player actually does. How to troubleshoot a missing firstQuartile pixel

  1. Identify the exact runtime. Record the CTV platform, player or SDK, and the VAST version and format in use. There is no universal scheduling rule established for all CTV players.
  2. Inspect the final resolved VAST response. Check the response the player receives after wrappers are resolved, not only the original ad tag. Confirm where the tracking declaration sits and that the event URL is present.
  3. Check the creative and its timeline. Verify that the creative type supports the expected time-based measurement and that Duration is present when required. For a static image, establish how the integration defines its display period and measurement events instead of assuming a video timeline.
  4. Separate validation from playback evidence. A validator’s acceptance confirms only the rules it checks. Use the target player’s playback and event logs to determine whether the quartile event was scheduled and whether its tracking request was emitted.
  5. Compare the event with the measurement goal. If the goal is time spent with a nonlinear overlay visible, confirm that the integration exposes an event representing that experience. A video quartile may measure something different—or may have no meaningful timeline for the creative.

What the reported squeezeback case does—and does not—show

Aleksander Sekowski’s October 7, 2026 article describes a debugging case in which impressions and a rendered creative were observed, but completion and time-on-screen reporting were absent. It also reports that validation and an LLM rewrite accepted the event even though the player might not schedule it. That is one author’s reported experience, not independently verified evidence of a general CTV failure pattern. Sekowski’s reported debugging case

The practical conclusion is narrower: an accepted declaration and a visible creative do not by themselves prove quartile scheduling or measurement delivery. For a deployment-specific answer, test the final response and inspect event output on the player that will run the ad.
