A project described as PhoneBot pairs a two-legged robot with a 2017 Android phone that supports its core sensing and movement controls. The robot’s hardware was estimated at about $400, excluding the phone; that figure is a reported estimate, not a current retail price or a complete cost including the handset.

What is PhoneBot?

PhoneBot is described in a Tech Xplore search-result summary as a two-legged robot that uses an Android phone as part of its control system. The summary identifies the handset as a 2017 model and says it supported core sensing and movement controls. The original reporting page was not available to verify the project’s identity and specifications against a primary source, so details beyond that description are not established here.

What does the $400 estimate include?

The reported figure is about $400 for the robot hardware, explicitly excluding the phone. It is an estimate attributed to Tech Xplore reporting, not a verified price to buy PhoneBot today. The available description does not provide a parts list, explain the estimate’s date or method, or establish whether assembly or other costs are included.

Can an Android phone act as a robot’s brain?

A smartphone can support important robotics functions, but the PhoneBot description only establishes a role in core sensing and movement controls. It does not establish that the phone performed all computation, ran a particular AI model, or was the robot’s sole controller. Those stronger claims require a project paper or technical specification.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How PhoneBot differs from other phone-based robots

Other projects show that smartphones have been used in robotics, but their designs and reported costs should not be treated as direct comparisons with PhoneBot.

Project Form and phone role Reported cost
PhoneBot Described as two-legged; a 2017 Android phone supported core sensing and movement controls. Further architecture details are not established. About $400 for hardware, excluding the phone; a reported estimate, not a current retail price.
University of California, Irvine smartphone-robotics platform A 2013 research and education platform; its paper describes a neural network running on an Android phone during an outdoor foraging task. It is not described as a tiny humanoid. $350, excluding the phone, as reported by the authors for that platform.
FlutterMind A separate Android-powered, 3D-printed humanoid upper body. Its README describes USB-C OTG connection to Arduino motor controllers, two Arduino Nano boards, and 22 MG90S servos. About ₹7,050 for the approximate parts total listed in its README, accessed in 2026.

The projects differ in form, hardware, phone responsibilities, and what their cost figures cover. The reported amounts therefore do not establish which design is cheaper or performs better. FlutterMind’s README also says its servos need a separate power source rather than the Arduino 5V pin; that power guidance applies to FlutterMind, not PhoneBot.
