A résumé can say you know a tool or skill; a portfolio should let someone inspect what you did with it. Organize the site around completed work, your specific contribution, and evidence a reader can verify—not visual effects or unsupported claims.

Turn skills claims into inspectable evidence

After reading a list of skills, an evaluator may still wonder: “What have you actually done?” A project, working demo, artifact, or clearly documented contribution can help answer that question. The goal is not to claim that a portfolio guarantees an interview; it is to make relevant work easier to assess.

Maywise’s 2026 portfolio guide recommends showing what you can do, what you have done, and evidence of it. Treat that as practical editorial advice, not a proven hiring formula. A polished layout can help people navigate, but it cannot substitute for work and attribution.

Build each project story around your contribution

For each selected project, give a reader enough context to understand the work and distinguish your contribution from the team’s. A useful case study follows this sequence:

#1 Best Overall
Sooez 30-Pocket Binder with Plastic Sleeves 8.5x11,Heavy Duty Art Portfolio
  • 30-Pocket Portfolio Display Book: Each art binder with 30 bound clear sheet protectors, letting you show 60 pages of 8.5x11" letter size or smaller. Folder measures 11 1/2" (L) x 9 11/16" (W) x 9/16" (G).
  • Customizable Spine Title: You can label and identify your watercolors, sketches, scrapbook, art pieces, sheet music, certificates, and other projects by customizing the reversible spine insert.
  • High Transparency & Lies Flat When Open: Our presentation book with crystal clear PP sheet protectors offers complete transparency for checking through and organizing. Bound sheet protector lies flat when open, free your hands.
  • Archival Quality & Heavy Duty: Made from durable and light weight polypropylene which is archival quality, acid-free, non-stick, and non-glare, and water-proof. Thickened and sturdy cover won’t easy to crack and keeps your clear sleeves from being damaged.
  • Multi-Function: Not only suitable for long-term storage but also for displaying your paintings, photos, artwork, drawing, stencils. Great gift for students, teachers, office workers, secretaries, musicians, painters, etc.
  1. Context and problem: What needed to be built, improved, analyzed, or solved? Give only the background needed to understand the task.
  2. Your role: Identify whether you worked alone or with others, what you owned, and which parts were completed by teammates.
  3. Approach and decisions: Explain the steps you took and the decisions that shaped the work. Include meaningful trade-offs or obstacles where they clarify your judgment.
  4. Artifact or evidence: Link or show what a reader can inspect, such as a demo, sample, report, or documented contribution. Explain what the evidence demonstrates.
  5. Outcome and limitations: State what was completed and what changed. Use a metric only when you can substantiate it; otherwise describe the observable result and what was not measured.
  6. Learning: Briefly explain what you learned or would change next time, especially if the project did not go as planned.

This structure also works for a project that failed or was abandoned. Explain the original goal, the decisions made, what the evidence shows, and what you learned. A setback is useful portfolio material only when the account is candid and the reader can understand your actual work.

Describe results without inventing impact

If you do not have a defensible metric, do not create one or imply that an unmeasured business outcome was caused by your work. A specific, verifiable description is stronger than a fabricated percentage.

Dunwell 12-Pocket Presentation Binder 8.5x11, 24-Page Portfolio Folder
  • Includes 1 presentation binder with 12 bound clear sleeves (24 viewable pages), customizable front cover and spine inserts, plus an inner storage pocket.
  • Ideal for business presentations, client meetings, job interviews, portfolios, certificates, school projects, recipes, photos, and artwork.
  • Customizable front cover and spine inserts for easy labeling and personalization.
  • Acid-free, PVC-free sleeves resist dirt and moisture while preventing yellowing, ink transfer, and copy lift-off.
  • Fits standard 8.5" × 11" letter-size documents.

For example, instead of claiming that a project “increased efficiency by 40%” without measurement, say what you completed and what can be checked: “Built a prototype that imports a sample data file and flags rows that fail validation; the demo and validation rules are available to inspect. Time saved in real use was not measured.” This communicates scope and evidence without presenting an untested benefit as fact.

Make team work and confidentiality clear

Team projects can still demonstrate your skills, but label your part precisely. Separate your decisions and deliverables from shared work, and do not imply sole authorship of a group result. If a public artifact is not yours to disclose, describe your contribution at an appropriate level and provide only evidence you are authorized to share.

Do not publish private client or employer data just to make a case study more persuasive. Seek permission where needed; where appropriate, remove identifying details and use a suitably anonymized account. Anonymization should not expose sensitive information indirectly through screenshots, sample records, or project details.

Choose a site you can keep current

Use the simplest setup you will realistically maintain. Maywise’s guide describes a custom domain as optional; the available guidance does not establish one universally best platform. Prioritize clear navigation, working links, readable project pages, and a straightforward way to contact you over elaborate features you will not update.

Rank #4
Dunwell Presentation Binder 24-Pocket, 8.5x11 Portfolio Book, Black
  • Includes 24 permanently bound, top-loading sleeves that display up to 48 letter-size pages.
  • Designed for standard 8.5" × 11" documents: Lightweight presentation book fits US letter-size papers.
  • Clear front cover and spine inserts let you add labels or title pages for easy identification.
  • Durable plastic covers with non-glare polypropylene sleeves help protect documents from dirt and moisture for everyday presentation and storage.
  • Holds standard 8.5" × 11" documents.

Choose projects for relevance and inspectability rather than treating a suggested count as a rule. A small set of well-explained examples can make your role and evidence clear; only include additional work when it adds useful proof rather than repeating the same claim.

Open the site as if you had never seen it before. Maywise proposes a 30-second review as an editorial heuristic, not a validated study. Use the quick scan to find friction, then inspect the project pages more carefully.

  • Can the reader inspect evidence, or understand why it cannot be public?
  • Are outcomes and limitations stated honestly?
  • Do the links work, and is there a clear contact route?

If a reader must infer what you did from a skills list, decorative design, or vague team result, revise the project story. Make the work—and your part in it—the easiest thing on the site to understand.
