A $10 test transfer did not catch the fake address because the wallet sent the test to the same lookalike destination it later used for the main payment. On November 17, 2025, a Solana wallet intended to send USDT to a Gate.io deposit address but instead sent 30,749.80 USDT—reported as $30,750—to an attacker-controlled lookalike. The episode shows why a test is useful only after the destination has been checked against a trusted source.
What happened in the Solana address-poisoning incident?
Bitquery reported that the wallet intended to deposit USDT at Gate.io. After a legitimate interaction, a similar-looking address sent the wallet a tiny transfer. The wallet later copied that lookalike from its transaction history and sent it $10 as a test. When the transfer arrived, the wallet sent the rest of the payment to the same address: 30,749.80 USDT, which Bitquery listed as $30,750. Bitquery’s incident analysis describes the transaction sequence.
The $10 transfer proved only that the copied address could receive funds. It did not establish that the address belonged to Gate.io or was the intended deposit destination. A successful test cannot verify an address if both the test and the main transfer use the same address copied from a poisoned history.
How address poisoning tricks a sender
Address poisoning is a copy-and-paste scam. An attacker sends a tiny amount from an address chosen to resemble one the victim has used or expects to use. The unsolicited transfer adds the lookalike to transaction history, where the victim may later mistake it for the real destination and copy it.

The scam relies on destination confusion, not necessarily on access to the victim’s wallet or seed phrase. Solscan’s address-poisoning explainer describes the same general tactic. A tiny unsolicited transfer is a reason to treat transaction history cautiously, not evidence by itself that the sender has taken control of the wallet.
Why matching a few characters is not enough
Wallet addresses are long, and many interfaces show only a shortened beginning and ending. A lookalike can imitate the fragments visible in that shortened display while differing elsewhere. Do not decide that a destination is correct simply because its first and last characters resemble the address you expect.

Instead, compare the full destination with the address from the original trusted source—for example, the deposit address shown in the exchange account where you intend to deposit. Do not retrieve it from a recent-transfer list or an unsolicited transfer’s details. Re-open the trusted source and compare before signing.
How to verify a Solana destination before sending
- Retrieve the address independently. Open the intended recipient’s official account or payment instructions and obtain the destination there, rather than copying it from transaction history.
- Compare the full address. Check the destination shown in the wallet against the full address from that trusted source before approving. A partial match is not enough.
- Confirm the asset and account type. Make sure you are sending the intended asset to the correct kind of account. Solana’s official address-verification guidance says to verify that an off-curve address is intended to receive funds through a smart wallet and to check that a token-program-owned destination is a token account for the expected mint. It also warns that SOL sent to a token account is outside the sender’s control.
- Use a test only after verifying the destination. A small test can help check that a payment reaches the address you independently verified. If the address was copied from poisoned history, a successful test merely confirms that the wrong destination can receive funds.
- Recheck before the larger transfer. Confirm the destination in the transaction details again before signing the main payment; do not assume a prior test established the identity of the recipient.
What Bitquery’s figures say—and what they do not
Bitquery’s 2026 on-chain analysis reported that 4.5 million Solana wallets were poisoned between October 30, 2025, and October 7, 2026, averaging about 42,000 poisoned wallets on the median day in that period. These are figures from Bitquery’s analysis, not a verified count of every address-poisoning incident.

For losses, Bitquery counted 1,104 wallets that later paid a lookalike, totaling $940,106. That cohort includes wallets poisoned through July 9, 2026, giving each a three-month observation window. The median payment was $50, and 64% of payments were under $100. Yet twelve payments of $10,000 or more accounted for 62% of the stolen amount in the analysis. The figures show why a scam built around tiny bait transfers can still lead to substantial losses for a smaller number of victims. Bitquery’s analysis provides the figures and their scope.
