A UniFi network screenshot reportedly associated 1,008.45GB of uploaded traffic with a Keurig K-Supreme SMART coffee maker over 10 days and 9 hours. That is an extraordinary counter reading—but it does not prove the brewer sent 1TB of data over the internet. In the incident report, the owner said most of the traffic appeared to stay on the local network, and no packet capture established what the traffic contained or what caused it.
What the 1TB figure actually shows
Tom’s Hardware reported the figure from a UniFi dashboard screenshot: 1,008.45GB uploaded and 9.94GB downloaded over 10 days and 9 hours by a device identified as Keurig. The outlet’s follow-up says the dashboard did not establish that 1TB had gone out to the public internet; the owner believed most of the traffic remained within the home network. Tom’s Hardware’s incident report is based on the owner’s post and follow-up, not an independent network measurement.
That distinction matters. A router may report traffic associated with a device without showing that all of it left the home, reached a manufacturer, or contained personal information. The reported total is a striking network-traffic counter, not confirmed internet data exfiltration.
Which appliance was involved, and why it connects
The device was identified as a Keurig K-Supreme SMART with BrewID. Reporting describes app features including remote brewing, remote on/off, and scheduled brewing, as well as Alexa and Google Home integration. BrewID uses Wi-Fi to recognize Keurig-made pods and apply recommended settings. These features explain why the machine has a network connection; they do not explain the spike.

- 12-CUP DURALIFE GLASS CARAFE: The sturdy 12-cup* carafe has measurement markings for accurate filling and an easy-grip handle for comfortable pouring. *Cup equals approximately 5 ounces (varies by brewing technique).
- SNEAK-A-CUP FEATURE TO PREVENT DRIPS: This feature temporarily stops the flow of coffee so you can pour your first cup before brewing ends without making a mess.
- EASY-VIEW WATER WINDOW: The front-facing window shows you the exact amount of water that will turn into coffee, and the brew basket requires a standard paper coffee filter for proper operation.
- DIGITAL CONTROLS WITH RUBBERIZED FEEL: Large, rubberized buttons give you full control of the coffeemaker, and the easy-read screen displays the clock, brew time, and programming options.
- QUICKTOUCH PROGRAMMING WITH AUTO SHUTOFF: Easily program the 24-hour auto brew feature so you can wake up to a fresh pot of coffee or whenever you desire. 2-Hour Auto Shutoff for added safety and peace of mind with every use.
Cybernews reports that this model uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and WPA2-PSK. Those are reported specifications, not evidence that either the Wi-Fi band or security setting caused the traffic. Cybernews’ incident coverage discusses the model and its connected features, but covers the same underlying post rather than an independent measurement.
What is known—and what is not
- Reported: A UniFi screenshot showed 1,008.45GB up and 9.94GB down for a device identified as Keurig over 10 days and 9 hours.
- Not established: The amount of traffic that left the local network, the contents of the traffic, or its destination.
- Cause: Unknown. The owner suspected a bug, but no packet capture was made to identify the traffic. The available reporting does not establish spying, a hack, cryptocurrency mining, or transmission of personal data.
- Company explanation: The cited reporting contains no attributable Keurig technical statement resolving the cause.
In other words, the event raises a legitimate question about an anomalous counter, but it is not proof of a security breach or of typical behavior across this model or other smart appliances.

- BREW BY THE CUP OR CARAFE: Brews both K-Cup pods and coffee grounds.
- MULTISTREAM TECHNOLOGY: Saturates the grounds evenly to extract full flavor and aroma in every cup, hot or cold.
- BREW OVER ICE: Adjusts temperature for maximum flavor and less ice melt for single-cup iced coffees and teas.

- MULTIPLE BREW SIZES: Brew 6, 8, 10, or 12oz single cups or 6, 8, 10, or 12-cup carafes. 12-cup glass carafe specially designed to limit dripping.
How the reported amount compares with other appliance data figures
Other published figures provide scale, but they are not direct benchmarks for this coffee maker. The products, measurement methods, use patterns, and treatment of local traffic differ.

| Source and scope | Reported data volume | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Reports, connected appliances in a 2023 study | 3.4MB to 19MB sent to manufacturers per week | Appliances were used once per day, which Consumer Reports said was less than average use. The data was encrypted, so researchers could not inspect its contents. Consumer Reports’ study covered other appliances, not this Keurig. |
| Siemens/BSH connected-product and service estimates, page accessed in 2026 | Less than approximately 10MB of product data per day and less than approximately 1MB of connected-service data per day at average use | These are company estimates for its connected products and services, not independent test results or Keurig measurements; the company says actual volumes may vary significantly. Siemens/BSH data-protection information. |
| Reported Keurig incident | 1,008.45GB upload counter over 10 days and 9 hours | UniFi screenshot as described by Tom’s Hardware; it did not establish that this volume went to the internet. |
The contrast is large, but it cannot establish how much data a normally operating Keurig should use. The incident’s local-versus-internet traffic uncertainty prevents a like-for-like comparison.

What to do if a device shows unusually high traffic
Check what your router is counting
- Open your router’s management app or web interface and find its connected-device or traffic-usage view. Labels and menu paths vary by router.
- Identify the device by its name, connection details, or MAC address; names in a dashboard can be ambiguous or change.
- Check the reporting period and whether the counter includes local-network transfers, internet-bound traffic, or both. If the interface does not distinguish them, treat the total as device-associated traffic rather than proof of an upload to the internet.
- Look for whether the counter continues increasing, and note the time and amount. A single accumulated total does not reveal when the traffic occurred or what generated it.
Limit exposure while you investigate
- If you do not need the appliance’s connected functions, disconnect it from Wi-Fi or turn off its network features using the device’s documented settings.
- If your router supports an IoT or guest network with isolation, move smart appliances there so they are separated from trusted devices. The exact protections depend on the router’s configuration.
- Restarting the appliance may be a reasonable troubleshooting step, but it does not identify the cause of a traffic spike.
In this case, Tom’s Hardware reports that the owner rebooted the brewer and placed it on a segregated VLAN; the issue did not recur during the period described. The outlet characterized that result as temporary. It is one person’s report, not a controlled test or a guaranteed fix. The report describes the response and its limits.

The useful lesson is to distinguish a traffic alert from a diagnosis. A per-device dashboard can help identify an unexpected pattern, but it may not tell you where traffic went or what it contained. For a better view, look for router reporting that separates local-network traffic from internet-bound traffic and supports isolation for smart devices. Availability and labels differ by router, so consult the documentation for your own model.

- 2 BREW STYLES: Classic or Rich, each brew is flavorful and never bitter with custom brew strengths.
- 12-CUP GLASS CARAFE: Brew small or large batches of coffee – perfect for day to day or entertaining.
- HOTTER BREWING TECHNOLOGY: Delivers even saturation and temperature control for ultra-flavorful coffee.
- SMALL BATCH FUNCTION: Ensure your coffee is never diluted when brewing a small batch (1-4 cups).
- WAKE UP TO HOT COFFEE: 24-hour programmable delay brew allows you to prepare your brew up to a day in advance.
Until packet-level evidence or an attributable technical explanation clarifies this particular case, the safest conclusion is narrow: a smart coffee maker was associated with an unusually large network counter, while the destination, contents, and cause remain unknown.
