Highsted Chalk Quarry, south of Sittingbourne near Rodmersham Green in Kent, was being worked in 1955 when a human skull rolled down the quarry edge. The discovery led to a rescue excavation that was later thought to have recorded 26 people. A 2026 study of the surviving material now shows that Highsted was a Late Iron Age and Early Roman cemetery and ranks it as the third-largest known Deal-rite cemetery, after Mill Hill and Thanet Earth.
That ranking needs a qualification: the quarry was destroyed, the excavation paperwork became scattered, and the surviving remains represent at least 17 individuals rather than a complete inventory. Even so, radiocarbon dating, skeletal study, isotope analysis and ancient DNA have recovered a detailed picture from a collection once treated as effectively lost.
How the Highsted cemetery was discovered
A skull at the quarry edge
In 1955, quarry worker Archie Pack saw a human skull tumble down the bank at Highsted Chalk Quarry. Frederick George Winter then uncovered additional skeletons and pottery, prompting an archaeological rescue excavation while chalk extraction continued.
What the rescue excavation recorded
The excavation documentation described 20 burials and six features interpreted as cremations. Contemporary reporting later counted 26 individuals. The figures do not describe two different cemeteries: they reflect the incomplete and changing record produced during an emergency excavation. As quarrying continued, the site itself was eventually removed.

Why the evidence became difficult to use
Highsted’s physical context is gone. Finds, labels and paperwork were dispersed, and some remains were mixed together. Without the original graves and a secure plan, researchers cannot reconstruct the cemetery’s full extent or assign every bone to a particular burial.
What the 2026 reanalysis established
At least 17 people survive in the collection
Michael Legge and colleagues examined surviving material at Maidstone Museum. Although the collection is fragmented and commingled, osteological work shows that it contains remains from at least 17 individuals. At least seven are probably male and three probably female; juveniles are also represented. Those figures are minimums, not a complete demographic profile of everyone buried at Highsted.
The cemetery spans the Roman conquest period
Radiocarbon results place the burials in the Late Iron Age and Early Roman period. One individual may date to the second century AD. Highsted therefore records continuity and change around the Roman conquest rather than a single, short-lived burial episode.

Scientific methods used together
The study combined radiocarbon dating with osteology, isotope analysis and ancient DNA. Dating supplied the sequence; skeletal examination identified age, sex and disease evidence; isotopes addressed childhood origin and diet; and DNA tested biological relationships and wider ancestry. That combination is particularly important at Highsted because the lost excavation context prevents researchers from relying on grave layout alone.
Why Highsted is called the third-largest Deal-rite cemetery
Several graves were arranged in neat north–south rows, a pattern associated with the Deal-rite, an Iron Age burial tradition named after Mill Hill near Deal. The 2026 reanalysis describes Highsted as the third-largest known cemetery of this type, behind Mill Hill and Thanet Earth, using the reported total of 26 burials.
“Third-largest” is a current scholarly ranking within known Deal-rite cemeteries, not an absolute count of every person ever buried at Highsted. The quarry destroyed part or all of the cemetery, and the surviving collection contains fewer individuals than the contemporary total. The ranking could change if better records or additional remains from other sites are identified.

Were the six features really cremations?
The original excavation called six features cremations, but the new interpretation is more specific and more cautious. They may have been bustum burials: a pyre constructed directly over an open grave, allowing the body and burning debris to fall into the grave as the pyre collapsed.

Where the buried people came from and what they ate
Mostly local childhood origins
Isotope results indicate that the people buried at Highsted generally grew up locally. The evidence does not suggest a cemetery populated mainly by newcomers from distant regions.

Diet changed without becoming wholly foreign
Carbon and nitrogen isotope patterns fall between typical local Iron Age and Roman dietary signatures. A small seafood or imported-food signal appears in the results, indicating some dietary change or access to foods beyond the most typical local pattern as Roman influence expanded.
DNA shows regional connections
Ancient DNA broadly fits Iron Age southern Britain. One person had an affinity with France or Switzerland, while another showed an affinity with Scotland. These results point to local continuity alongside movement and contact across the Channel and within Britain.

Because the bones are damaged and commingled, none of these observations can reliably be assigned to a named individual from the excavation record. The study also found that one man and one woman were related at third degree or more distantly, demonstrating a biological connection without establishing a close family relationship.
What Highsted changes about the “lost cemetery” story
- The cemetery was not simply an undated Iron Age site: radiocarbon evidence places it across the Late Iron Age and Early Roman transition.
- The 26-person contemporary count and the minimum of 17 people represented in surviving remains are compatible but answer different questions: one records the reported excavation total, while the other reflects what can still be identified in the museum collection.
- Scientific testing can recover population history, diet and biological relationships even when a site plan and excavation paperwork have been damaged or dispersed.
- The apparent cremation areas may preserve evidence for bustum practice, although that interpretation cannot be confirmed without the lost contexts.
What cannot be reconstructed
No surviving evidence can establish the cemetery’s original boundaries, the exact number of graves or the complete arrangement of people within them. The quarry’s destruction also prevents a new excavation that could resolve those questions. Highsted’s importance therefore rests on a carefully qualified reconstruction: a substantial Deal-rite cemetery, used from the Late Iron Age into the Roman period, whose surviving fragments still preserve evidence of local lives, changing diets and wider connections.
