An Osaka University-led team has built a gold-nanogap sensor that reads electrical signals from individual amino-acid molecules and uses machine learning to tell their L and D forms apart. That molecular “handedness” can be a potential biosignature, but the device still needs a collected sample and more validation; it is not a remote alien-life detector or a confirmed life finder.
What the chip actually detects
The device measures quantum-tunneling currents as molecules pass through a tiny gap between gold electrodes. Each crossing produces an electrical spike. A machine-learning model analyzes those spikes to identify amino acids and distinguish the two mirror-image forms of each molecule.
This is a single-molecule electrical measurement rather than an optical image or a conventional chemical spectrum. The study, published in Nature Communications on 5 October 2026, focused on a targeted panel of 11 amino acids.

L and D are mirror-image molecules
Many amino acids exist as two enantiomers, called L and D. They have the same atoms and chemical formula but are arranged as non-superimposable mirror images. Ordinary chemical reactions can make both forms, while terrestrial biology overwhelmingly incorporates L-amino acids into proteins.

An imbalance can be a biosignature
A sample with a strong excess of one enantiomer may therefore deserve biological scrutiny. Abiotic chemistry often produces more balanced mixtures, although that pattern is not universal and an L-rich result alone cannot prove that organisms were present. Geological processes, contamination and chemical alteration must also be considered.
How the experiment worked
- Fabricate the sensor: The researchers made a nanometre-scale gap between gold electrodes.
- Introduce the sample: Amino-acid solutions were flowed across the gap.
- Record molecular events: Individual molecules crossing the gap generated quantum-tunneling current spikes.
- Classify the spikes: Machine learning linked the electrical patterns to amino-acid identity and L or D chirality.
- Check against an established method: Results from extracts were compared with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
The team also analyzed extracts from the Murchison meteorite, which fell in Australia, and soils from Chile’s Atacama Desert. Those are chemically complex natural samples and an extreme Earth environment, respectively; neither sample represents extraterrestrial life.

What the first tests showed
| Test | Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Individual L and D amino acids | More than 80% accuracy | The model could usually distinguish the two forms when analyzing individual targets. |
| Blind test containing 39 amino acids | More than 50% accuracy | Performance remained above random chance in a broader, unseen test. |
| Mixtures of four amino acids with different chiral compositions | More than 66% accuracy | The system could estimate composition in selected mixtures, not just isolated molecules. |
These figures describe different tasks, so the highest number should not be treated as the chip’s universal accuracy. The paper reports that quantitative agreement varied with analyte identity and sample matrix. Confidence filtering removed ambiguous events, but doing so also leaves the system dependent on how many clear molecular events are collected.
Nanogap sensing versus LC-MS
LC-MS remains the reference comparison used in this study. The new approach’s attraction is compact, single-molecule electrical sensing; its present trade-offs are targeted recognition, sample-preparation needs and discrepancies that can appear in complex matrices.

| Characteristic | Gold-nanogap tunneling method | LC-MS |
|---|---|---|
| Readout | Electrical current spikes from molecules crossing a gold gap | Chromatographic separation combined with mass spectrometry |
| Measurement scale | Single-molecule events | Bulk analytical measurement after separation |
| Analyte coverage in this study | Targeted amino-acid recognition | Broader established analytical coverage, depending on method setup |
| Sample preparation | Requires a prepared solution to flow through the nanogap | Requires extraction and instrument-specific preparation |
| Complex-matrix agreement | Dependent on analyte and matrix; not uniformly established | Used as the study’s reference method |
| Deployment status | Experimental platform requiring further validation | Established laboratory technology |
The chip is therefore best understood as a possible miniaturized complement to laboratory analysis, not a replacement for a mature instrument today.
Can it detect alien life on a spacecraft?
Not by itself. A flight instrument would first need to collect material, extract or dissolve relevant molecules, remove or manage interfering compounds, and deliver a suitable solution to the sensor. The current work demonstrates classification on selected amino acids and mixtures, not autonomous analysis of every unknown compound a spacecraft might encounter.

What a rover version would still need
- Rugged sample handling: Drilling, scooping or atmospheric collection would have to produce a clean, repeatable input for the nanogap.
- Matrix-matched calibration: Reference materials that reproduce the expected soil, ice or rock chemistry would be needed to quantify bias.
- More event statistics: Larger numbers of molecular crossings would help stabilize estimates and reduce uncertainty.
- Open-set recognition: The model would need to flag molecules it was not trained on instead of forcing every signal into a known category.
- Contamination controls: A mission would have to distinguish indigenous chemistry from terrestrial amino acids introduced during construction or handling.
What the result means for astrobiology now
The important advance is a targeted way to read amino-acid chirality electrically at the single-molecule level. That could eventually reduce the size or power burden of some analytical systems and provide an additional measurement alongside broader chemical methods.
The evidence remains deliberately narrower than the headline suggests. The team demonstrated promising accuracy on controlled targets and tested natural extracts from Murchison and the Atacama, but it did not find organisms, detect life beyond Earth or show that the sensor can operate unattended on a planetary surface. Its current role is a foundation for further instrument development and validation.

What researchers say should happen next
The authors identify three practical priorities: create matrix-matched reference materials, collect larger numbers of molecular events, and develop open-set recognition for unfamiliar compounds. Those steps would test whether the approach remains reliable when sample chemistry is genuinely unknown rather than limited to a trained panel.
