A tracking scan can show that a shipment identifier was observed; by itself, it does not prove the next carrier accepted possession. Model a carrier handover as a sequence of distinct, time-stamped events—such as shipping, arrival, and receiving—and keep the event time separate from the time your platform recorded it. That gives customers a continuous timeline without claiming more than the available evidence establishes.

Why a single “handover” status can mislead

“Handed over” may sound like a completed transfer, but a tracking platform should not assume that every carrier uses the label to mean the same thing. A scan establishes that an identifier was observed at a particular point and time. It does not, on its own, establish a contractual transfer of possession or ownership.

Separate the evidence from the interpretation. A carrier-reported shipping or dispatch step is different from an observation in transit, an arrival at an interchange, or an acknowledgment by the receiving carrier. If an integration supplies only a generic status, preserve that status and its source rather than converting it into a stronger claim of acceptance.

Represent the handover as a sequence of events

GS1’s EPCIS guidance describes a simple business transfer as shipping and receiving events. More complex transfers can include distinct arrival and acceptance steps, along with intermediate carrier observations. A complete transfer may span multiple events generated by more than one party, rather than a single scan.

  1. Tendered or shipped by the first carrier: Record the outbound event at the origin. Do not imply that the next carrier accepted the shipment unless an acceptance event exists or the partners have agreed that the supplied status means acceptance.
  2. Observed in transit: Record intermediate carrier or transport observations when available. These can show progress without suggesting that the platform sees every movement.
  3. Arrived at a transfer location: Record arrival at a facility or interchange. Arrival establishes reaching a location; it need not establish that the next carrier took possession.
  4. Accepted by the next carrier: Record the receiving party’s acknowledgment when that event is available. Keep it distinct from the first carrier’s shipping event.
  5. Recorded by the tracking platform: Preserve when the platform received or stored each update, separately from when the underlying event occurred.

This is a modeling pattern, not a universal carrier scan-code dictionary. Map partner codes to meanings using the carrier’s own documentation and business agreements; labels such as “handover,” “manifested,” and “received” do not have an established, universal custody meaning across carriers.

Keep event time and platform record time separate

Event time is when the business event happened. Record time is when the event was entered into the repository. Record time helps a platform find newly recorded events, but it does not replace event time. If a carrier update arrives late, showing only its ingestion time can make a physical event appear to have happened later than it did.

Retain the local time-zone offset for the event as well. It lets systems interpret the timestamp in the place where the event occurred, particularly when a shipment crosses regions. If the source provides event time but not an offset, or supplies only a platform receipt time, do not silently present that value as a fully qualified local event time.

What to capture for each shipment event

GS1’s EPCIS and Core Business Vocabulary (CBV) provide a shared structure for describing the “what, when, where, why and how” of products and other assets, including status, movement, location, and chain of custody. An implementation should preserve the dimensions that are known rather than filling gaps with assumptions.

  • When: The event time and its local time-zone offset; store platform record time separately when available.
  • Where: The known location or read point for the event, and any expected destination location the event supports.
  • Why: The business step, disposition, and relevant business context that explain what the event means.
  • Who and transfer context: The source and destination parties, and relevant transaction context, when supplied and applicable.
  • Evidence and provenance: The reporting party or system and the underlying partner event or observation, so downstream users can distinguish an observed scan from a receiving party’s acknowledgment.

Keep the transfer dimension explicit. Ownership, physical possession, and location can refer to different parties or change at different times. Source and destination information can describe these separately when known; a location change should not be treated automatically as a change in ownership or possession.

Choose event detail to match the evidence and use case

There is no single correct level of detail for every network. Decide how to represent an event based on what the source actually reports and what users need to know.

Use EPCIS without assuming every carrier implements it

GS1 describes EPCIS as a supply-chain visibility standard for capturing and sharing interoperable event information. EPCIS and CBV make common event dimensions explicit, supporting information shared within and between enterprises. The GS1 implementation guidance explains how event context can identify the objects involved, when and where an event happened, and why it occurred, including business-step and business-context information.

EPCIS 2.0 adds JSON/JSON-LD syntax and REST APIs for capturing and querying events, and supports sensor data and certification details. Those capabilities can support richer shipment or cold-chain visibility, but a standard does not mean that every carrier exposes those data or APIs. Validate technical conformance against current normative GS1 artifacts and confirm what each integration actually supplies.

  • Widely Use Range - This NetumScan Handheld USB barcode scanner can be used in supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouse, library, bookstore, drugstore, retail shop for file management, inventory tracking and POS(point of sale), etc.

GS1 logistics interoperability material discusses identifiers such as GLN, GTIN, and SSCC. Use identifiers consistently across partners and define what each identifies. If one system reports a parcel while another reports its pallet or shipment, their events can appear disconnected even when they relate to the same physical journey.

What a tracking platform can and cannot promise

An event model can preserve and communicate what carrier integrations report; it cannot create facts that those integrations do not provide. Some networks expose sparse or delayed updates. A platform can receive an event after it happened, and the available fields may not establish acceptance, possession, or ownership.

For each partner, document the meaning and source of event codes, which identifiers they refer to, which party supplies each event, and what evidence supports any customer-facing custody claim. A shared standard supplies structure, not automatic agreement on these operational details or a promise of real-time scans.
