Flurry, a recruitable and fully playable snowman from Frostburg, is the unexpected star of Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United. In a New York Comic Con demo, the character joined the party as its fifth member, throwing punches and casting spells while bringing an absurd visual contrast to a serious fantasy adventure.
That oddity matters because Flurry is not merely a joke character. The demo showed a usable party member inside a modernized version of the original game’s turn-based systems, even if this brief hands-on session is not enough to judge the final balance.
What Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United is
Destinies United is Square Enix’s full 3D remake of the 1995 JRPG Romancing SaGa 3. Its story keeps the series’ apocalyptic premise: “Every 300 years, Morastrum, the Star of Death, rises, dooming all born beneath it except the mysterious Child of Destiny.” Nearly two decades after the last appearance, an uprising in Loanne reveals that the Four Sinistrals are trying to reopen the gates to the Abyss. Eight heroes must unite to stop them.

The remake updates the presentation and speeds up the feel of play without abandoning the original’s turn-based foundation. Square Enix describes eight protagonists, while 2026 announcement coverage by RPGamer reports more than 20 additional recruitable characters. That large roster is central to the game’s appeal: your party can look and fight very differently from another player’s.

Who is Flurry?
A recruitable snowman from Frostburg
Flurry is a sentient snowman from Frostburg and can be recruited as a party member. The preview’s most memorable description is also the simplest: “Yes, Flurry is an honest-to-goodness snowman.” In the demo, Flurry occupied the fifth party slot and could attack with punches or use spells.
Funny appearance, real combat role
Flurry’s design is an immediate visual surprise in a party otherwise made up of conventional adventurers. More importantly, the character uses the same combat systems as everyone else rather than serving as a noncombat mascot. The preview found Flurry weaker than the other demo characters overall, but noted that the snowman could still hit hard with punches. That is an early demo impression, not a final assessment of Flurry’s statistics, usefulness or late-game performance.
How the remake’s combat works
Turn order remains visible
Battles are turn based, with a turn-order indicator displayed across the top of the battle screen. You can see the sequence of upcoming actions and make decisions within that structure instead of relying on real-time inputs.

Characters retain distinct specialties
The demo party illustrated how recruit choice affects your available attacks:
- Khalid: sword techniques and water-based attacks.
- Ellen: electric punches and kicks.
- Peony: spear abilities.
- Robin: a masked swordsman.
- Flurry: punches and spells.
These are observations from the demo party, not a complete class or ability guide for the finished game.
Glimmers let abilities evolve
Glimmer is the remake’s ability-upgrade system. During combat, a chosen technique can be replaced by a similar but stronger one. In the preview, Peony’s Spear Attack transformed into Giant Swing, and the upgraded move remained available for the rest of the demo. The system adds progression to individual actions while preserving each character’s general fighting identity.

Formations make placement tactical
Where party members stand affects line and area attacks. Formation choices therefore matter beyond presentation: a group arranged for one encounter may be vulnerable to a different attack pattern in the next. The demo did not establish every formation or its full list of bonuses, but it clearly treated positioning as part of battle planning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOverdrives enable paired attacks
After an Overdrive meter charges, two party members can combine for a stronger attack. The preview saw combinations including Khalid and Ellen, Ellen and Peony, and Robin and Flurry. Building the meter and choosing the right pair gives battles a team-oriented payoff in addition to individual turns.
What the New York Comic Con demo showed
The appointment took place on October 14, 2026, with the party travelling through Gwayne’s Den along a mountain route toward a dragon encounter. The limited slice was useful for demonstrating faster battles, the turn-order display, formations, Glimmers and Overdrives, but it cannot establish the complete difficulty curve, story scope or final balance.

That distinction is especially important for Flurry. A character that feels underpowered in a short, fixed demo may have different equipment, abilities or growth options in the full release. The reliable conclusion is that Flurry is recruitable, playable and mechanically integrated—not that the snowman will be the strongest or weakest character in the finished game.

How it compares with the 1995 original
The remake’s defining trade-off is preservation versus presentation. It keeps the classic turn-based structure and party-building freedom while moving the world and characters into full 3D. Faster-feeling encounters, visible turn order, Glimmers, formations and Overdrives provide modern clarity and additional tactical layers without turning the game into an action RPG.
Flurry also highlights how much the recruitable-party concept can stand out in a remake. The original’s unusual roster is being presented with a contemporary visual language, and a sentient snowman can now share the screen with swordfighters and spear users without being reduced to a novelty cameo.
What is still unknown
- The demo does not establish Flurry’s final balance, progression or best equipment.
- No final review scores, sales figures, player counts or performance benchmarks have been published in the available coverage.
- The demonstrated abilities and character specialties should not be treated as a complete guide to every recruit.
- Regional prices and the contents or availability of collector’s and deluxe products may differ from the Japanese listings.
For now, the clearest reason to watch Destinies United is the combination of a faithful turn-based core, more legible modern systems and a roster willing to include someone as wonderfully improbable as Flurry.
