Real estate agents can use SEO to attract people searching for help in a specific market, then guide relevant visitors toward a call, consultation, or inquiry. The practical goal is not a guaranteed ranking or a fixed number of clients: it is a useful local presence and a way to measure whether the inquiries it generates are worth following up.
How can real estate agents get more leads from SEO?
Build a connected system: define whom you serve and where, publish useful pages that match local search intent, maintain an accurate Google Business Profile, make it easy to contact you, and evaluate leads rather than clicks alone. Search engine optimization helps search engines understand a site and helps people find it. Google Search Central’s SEO Starter Guide cautions that “There are no secrets here that’ll automatically rank your site first in Google (sorry!).”
SEO can support ongoing discovery, but it takes relevant content, accurate information, and maintenance. It is not a promise of a first-place result, a specific lead count, or a particular conversion rate.
Start with your service area and the leads you want
Choose a realistic geographic area and clarify whether your core work is with buyers, sellers, or both. This keeps your site focused on the people and services you can actually serve instead of trying to target every nearby place and every kind of transaction.
#1 Best Overall
Define a qualified lead before measuring results. For example, you might count an identifiable buyer or seller with a plausible need in your service area who has agreed to be contacted. That is a practical definition to adapt to your business, not a universal industry standard. Record whether each inquiry becomes a conversation, appointment, or client; a form submission by itself does not establish quality.
What keywords should a real estate agent target?
Use phrases that reflect what local clients need, and group them by intent. Examples to investigate in your market include “real estate agent in [city],” “homes for sale in [neighborhood],” “selling a home in [city],” and specific buyer or seller questions. These are starting points, not verified search-volume claims.
Map each distinct need to a useful page rather than making a separate page for every wording variation. A focused site might include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- An agent or service-area page that explains whom you serve and what help you offer.
- Buyer and seller service pages that explain your process and answer practical questions.
- Neighborhood guides with original, relevant information for people evaluating those areas.
- Answers to recurring local questions about the buying or selling process.
A page for every suburb with only its name changed adds little value and can create a thin, repetitive site. The National Association of REALTORS’ March 2018 SEO training material outlines keyword research, content creation, technical and on-page optimization, user experience, and link and citation building. Its platform-specific guidance is dated, so use current Google documentation for current search behavior and requirements.
How do I get my real estate website to show up on Google?
Make your site useful to people and understandable to search engines. Give each page a descriptive title, clear headings, original information, and working links. Make sure search engines can access the resources needed to render the page as users see it; Google discusses this in its SEO Starter Guide. Monitor how pages appear and perform using Google Search Console, and investigate indexing or page issues rather than assuming a published page will automatically appear in search.
Local visibility also involves your Google Business Profile. Google’s August 2025 guide to real-estate lead generation identifies a complete profile, positive reviews, an optimized website, and relevant local content among the elements of local SEO. Keep business details accurate, including name, phone, hours, and category; provide location or service-area information that accurately reflects your business. Ask for honest reviews, but do not script or purchase them.
Rank #3
Local/map results and standard organic results are distinct search surfaces. A complete profile can support local visibility, but it does not guarantee placement in a map result. The NAR guide describes the distinction, while Google’s current documentation should take precedence for present-day product details.
Turn relevant visits into useful inquiries
Give each page a natural next step tied to the visitor’s need: call, request a consultation, ask a question, or get a genuinely helpful guide. Keep contact details easy to find. Explain what happens after a person submits a form, and ask only for information you need to respond. A short, clear form is more useful than a lengthy form that discourages legitimate prospects.
Set up analytics to record meaningful actions, such as a completed inquiry or booked consultation, and connect those actions to your lead records. Google’s August 2025 guide recommends defining conversion actions and notes that a click alone does not show readiness to buy. Review the lead’s source, service area, stated need, and subsequent outcome so you can distinguish relevant inquiries from activity that does not fit your business.
How long does real estate SEO take?
There is no dependable universal timetable. Google says changes can take from hours to several months to be reflected in search and advises waiting a few weeks before assessing their effect in its SEO Starter Guide. That is guidance about when changes may appear, not a promise that rankings or leads will arrive within a set period.
Track progress over time by page and service area where possible. Useful measures include search impressions and clicks, landing pages, calls and form submissions, qualified leads, appointments, and clients. If a page attracts visits but few relevant inquiries, check whether it matches the searcher’s need and offers a clear next step. If it earns inquiries that rarely fit your service area or focus, revisit the page’s audience and wording.

SEO and Local Services Ads are different channels. SEO supports unpaid discovery through your site and local presence; Local Services Ads are paid visibility, charged on a lead basis. Paid placement may be worth evaluating when immediate intent capture matters, but eligibility, costs, and outcomes depend on the market and account.
Best Value
| Consideration | Organic SEO | Google Local Services Ads |
|---|---|---|
| How visibility is obtained | Unpaid search discovery supported by useful pages and local presence. | Paid ad placement with lead-based charges. |
| Setup and time horizon | Requires ongoing work on content, site usability, and local information; Google says changes can take hours to several months to appear. | Requires an active Local Services Ads account and verification under Google’s stated conditions. |
| Availability | Search visibility depends on the search and market; no placement is guaranteed. | Google’s support page describes Home Listings Ads as currently available on mobile in US markets, subject to account and job-type conditions. |
| Cost and reporting | No per-lead ad charge, though maintaining a website and SEO work can require resources. | Lead prices vary dynamically by market. Google says its reporting does not break performance out by Home Listings ad format. |
Google’s Home Listings Ads help page says the format requires an active Local Services Ads account, verification of the Business Profile, and opting into buyer’s-agent or seller’s-agent job types; it describes availability on mobile in US markets. Google’s June 11, 2026 announcement said enhanced Home Listings formats were rolling out across all 50 US states, with property details powered by HouseCanary and contact options for buyers. Check Google’s current eligibility and market terms before relying on availability. These ads are not organic SEO.
Google’s support page also says sensitive-criteria ad targeting, including race, religion, sex, disability, familial status, and national origin, is not permitted. For either channel, judge performance by the source and quality of inquiries, not visibility or clicks alone; no channel is established as universally better for real estate agents.
