If your PC fans surge noisily or behave unexpectedly, check the motherboard’s fan settings before buying anything. Many boards let you choose a preset or adjust fan behavior in BIOS/UEFI, but the controls vary by model. A familiar system may take only moments to change; 30 seconds is a best-case estimate, not a reliable promise.
First identify the board and the fan you want to adjust
Find your motherboard’s exact model, then consult its manual for the BIOS/UEFI fan-control instructions. Fan behavior is usually configured per header: a CPU fan connected to the CPU_FAN header may have separate settings from case fans connected to chassis or system-fan headers. Some boards also let you select which temperature sensor controls a fan, so confirm both the header and sensor before changing a setting.
Manufacturer labels are examples, not universal menu paths. ASUS calls its interface Q-Fan Control; supported GIGABYTE boards use Smart Fan 6; MSI documents fan settings under Hardware Monitor. Intel’s server-board instructions illustrate that even BIOS fan controls can differ substantially by board type.

Change a profile or edit a curve in BIOS/UEFI
- Restart the PC and enter BIOS/UEFI using the key shown during startup or specified in the motherboard manual. The key and available access methods depend on the system.
- Open the board’s fan-control screen. Look for a label such as Q-Fan Control, Smart Fan 6, Hardware Monitor, or a model-specific equivalent.
- Select the header for the fan you mean to control. Choose a preset profile if the board offers one, or open its manual curve controls if you need finer adjustment. ASUS describes Q-Fan as supporting both fan profiles and manual configuration for CPU and chassis fans.
- Check the control mode and temperature source before adjusting behavior. These options are hardware- and board-dependent; do not assume a displayed header is controlling the fan or sensor you intended.
- Save or apply the change using the BIOS control, then let the system start and observe the fan behavior. ASUS’s documented Q-Fan interface includes an Apply option; the exact save procedure varies by firmware.
Some interfaces can calibrate fans or help generate a curve. GIGABYTE describes Smart Fan 6 as offering multiple fan headers and temperature sources, plus a four-point EZ Tuning option to generate a curve. That does not establish one curve as right for every CPU, cooler, case, or fan placement.

Choose PWM or DC to match the fan and header
Fan control mode matters. ASUS documents Auto, PWM, and DC options, describing PWM for 4-pin CPU fans and DC for 3-pin fans. MSI likewise advises switching the relevant setting to DC for a supported 3-pin fan. Follow the instructions for your exact board and header; selecting an incompatible or unsupported mode can limit control or make the fan behave unexpectedly.
For ASUS’s interface details, see the ROG STRIX B650 Series BIOS Manual. MSI’s mode guidance is in FAQ MB-2537.

Why 30 seconds is not a dependable estimate
A quick change may take only a short time if you already know the correct header, mode, and menu. But entering firmware, finding the right control, and checking the result all take time, and menu layouts differ. ASUS estimates that its automatic Optimize All operation takes 2–5 minutes; that is a vendor estimate for that operation, not a benchmark for manually changing a curve or a promise about other boards. See the ASUS ROG UEFI BIOS EZ Mode GUI introduction.
A factory curve is not automatically wrong
A curve that seems too loud for one person may be acceptable to someone prioritizing cooling, and the official material here does not establish how often factory curves are unsuitable. Make a change only to address behavior you can observe, and avoid copying a temperature-and-speed recipe without accounting for your own hardware and cooling needs. The board documentation explains the available controls; it does not provide a universal curve that is safe or quiet for every setup.

- 【Intelligent Temperature Control Function】The fan has PWM temperature control function, after connecting the 4-pin power supply interface to the motherboard, there is no need to manually adjust the speed, the fan will automatically set the unfixed speed according to the temperature, if you want a fixed speed, you can adjust the fan to DC mode.

When the setting does not behave as expected
- The fan speed does not change: Confirm the fan is connected to the header you selected and that the selected control mode matches the fan and board instructions.
- The wrong fan responds: Recheck the header assignment; CPU and case-fan controls may be separate.
- The curve follows unexpected temperatures: Check which temperature source is assigned to that header, if the board exposes that option.
- You cannot find the control: Check the manual for your exact motherboard and firmware. A feature documented for one board or manufacturer is not guaranteed on another.
Changing an existing supported profile or curve is a settings adjustment; the cited documentation does not require a new fan or separate controller. ASRock also documents BIOS fan-control guidance in its FAQ 427.
