A small-business WordPress site needs a routine for updates, reliable backups, and checks that customers can still use the site—not a long list of chores all performed on one calendar day. Each month, review update and backup status, test the pages and forms that bring in business, and check statistics if the site is active. Before any significant change, make a backup that includes both site files and the database.
What should you check on a WordPress site each month?
Use this checklist as a monthly review, not a rule that every task must happen on the same date. WordPress.org’s maintenance guidance, last updated June 9, 2024, says checks should reflect a site’s activity and size. It recommends checking statistics at least monthly for an active site. WordPress site maintenance
- Review updates: In the WordPress dashboard, check for available core, plugin, and theme updates, along with failed automatic-update notices. Prioritize security updates, and make sure you have a current backup before applying updates.
- Verify backups: Confirm the latest backup completed, includes both files and the database, and is stored somewhere separate from the live site. Check that multiple recent copies are retained.
- Test the customer journey: Load the homepage and key product or service pages. Submit a contact, booking, or inquiry form and confirm it works. Check that contact details and calls to action are accurate.
- Check statistics: Review site statistics monthly if the site is active. Look for changes that merit attention, such as a key page no longer attracting visitors.
How should you handle WordPress updates?
Keeping plugins and themes current is a security practice, but enabling automatic updates does not remove the need for oversight. WordPress.org says, “To keep your WordPress site secure, you should always update your plugins and themes to the latest version.” Its auto-update guidance also advises regular backups before enabling automatic updates. Plugin and theme auto-updates
Automatic updates may depend on WordPress cron tasks and on how the hosting environment or plugins are configured. Check the dashboard for update notices and failures rather than assuming every scheduled update ran successfully. If you update manually, take a backup first and check the site afterward, especially its business-critical pages and forms.

What makes a backup useful?
A backup should capture both the site’s files and its database: files alone may not preserve the site’s content and settings, while a database alone does not include all of the site’s files. WordPress learning material recommends backing up before core, plugin, or theme updates and before installing a plugin or theme. WordPress backups
Choose a frequency that matches the cost of lost changes
WordPress Developer Resources suggests weekly backups for smaller websites and daily backups for high-activity sites. These are general suggestions, not a universal schedule. A business that frequently publishes, captures leads, or processes transactions may need more frequent backups than a mostly static brochure site. Backing up your WordPress site

Keep copies away from the live site
The WordPress developer guidance recommends retaining at least 3–5 recent backups in different locations. Examples include the hosting server, cloud storage, and a local computer. A copy downloaded to local storage can be part of the plan, but a single copy on one device is not a substitute for retaining multiple backups in separate locations. Backing up your WordPress site
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare methods by coverage and recovery
Host-provided backups, backup plugins, and manual backups can all be options. Choose based on whether the method captures files and the database, runs often enough for the site’s activity, stores copies separately with useful retention, and provides a restore path. Know who is responsible for noticing failures, and periodically confirm that the restore process works. A backup that cannot be restored when needed may not protect the business.

What should happen before a significant change?
Create a backup before updating WordPress core, plugins, or themes; installing a plugin or theme; or making another major change. This gives you a recovery point if the change causes a problem. WordPress backups
What can wait longer than a month?
Some maintenance depends more on site activity than on a fixed monthly deadline. Periodically review older content, check internal and external links, remove obsolete plugins or themes, and assess how the site is presented. WordPress.org’s maintenance guide offers a sample calendar but says the appropriate checks vary with site activity and size; treat it as guidance, not a universal schedule. WordPress site maintenance

Does your hosting still meet WordPress requirements?
When choosing or renewing hosting, check the current WordPress.org requirements page for supported software and HTTPS. As checked October 7, 2026, that page recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. Requirements can change, so verify the live page rather than treating these recommendations as permanent. WordPress requirements
