A Pomodoro timer can mark the start of a work interval, but it cannot make an unclear or overwhelming task easier to enter. If you or a friend knows what needs doing and still can’t begin, try defining one small, visible action before adding another time-management tool. The point is not to dismiss timers: it is to match the support to the obstacle.

Why can starting feel harder than working?

“Work on the report” describes an outcome, not necessarily an action you can take right now. A person may understand the goal and want to reach it while still finding the transition from intention to first movement difficult. That is a practical description of being stuck, not a diagnosis or proof of laziness.

Procrastination and difficulty beginning can have many explanations. A 2026 systematic review by Rossella Suriano in Research in Developmental Disabilities included 11 studies with 2,788 participants and found a positive association between ADHD symptoms and procrastination, especially inattention. The authors noted that much of the evidence was cross-sectional, so it does not establish that ADHD causes procrastination—or that procrastination means someone has ADHD. There is no established general-population estimate in the sources cited here for how common task-initiation difficulty is. A timer may help with time structure, but the available evidence does not establish that Pomodoro timing is universally better or worse than making a first step concrete.

Try a smaller, clearer first action

Use this brief experiment when a task feels too large or vague. Adjust the examples to fit the actual task; starting small is an invitation, not a guarantee that the rest will feel easy.

  1. Replace the broad task with an observable action. Instead of “work on the report,” try “open the report and write a rough heading.” The action should be something you can see yourself do.
  2. Shrink it again if it still feels difficult to enter. “Open the report” may be enough. For a complicated task, make a short list of smaller parts and choose one easy first step. Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust recommends breaking work down and starting with an easy step. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust’s de-procrastination guidance, last reviewed April 8, 2025, also suggests dividing complex tasks and trying a five-minute rule.
  3. Attach the action to a cue. For example: “After I put my mug in the sink, I’ll open the application and fill in the first field.” This is an if-then plan: a recognizable situation is linked to a specific behavior. Research by Peter M. Gollwitzer and colleagues describes implementation intentions as a way to prompt action initiation; four studies in the PubMed abstract examined immediate starts under cognitive load. Those findings make cue-based planning worth trying, not a promise that it will work for everyone. See the PubMed abstract.
  4. Choose a brief start commitment if it helps. You might try five minutes, then decide whether to continue. The commitment is to begin for a short period, not to finish the whole task or keep going once time is up.
  5. After the brief start, reassess. Continuing is optional. The small action still counts as progress, even if you stop there.

Choose support for the actual barrier

These approaches can be combined. They are practical options, not a ranking supported by comparative trials or a guarantee of results for any individual.

If the main barrier is… Try…
The task is vague Name one specific, visible first behavior.
The task feels too large Break it into smaller parts and begin with an easy one.
Crossing into action feels difficult Try a short start commitment, such as five minutes.
You forget or keep choosing when to begin Use a reminder or link the action to a cue, such as finishing a routine task.
You lose track of time once working A timer or calendar cue may help structure the work interval.

NHS trust guidance lists timers among optional supports alongside task breakdown, easy first steps, and reminders. So a timer is not inherently the wrong tool; it may simply address a different problem. If you have not yet decided what the first action is, start by making that action concrete.

How to help a friend without taking over

Ask what the smallest visible first action could be, or offer to check in after they try it. If they want company, you can sit nearby while they begin. Keep the choice with them: avoid shaming, insisting they use your preferred method, or turning a small step into a demand to finish everything.

CHADD’s article on procrastination describes starting as often the hardest part and discusses chunking tasks, cues, and environment as practical supports. Its advice is commentary, not proof that a particular tactic will work for every person. Read CHADD’s multi-lens discussion of procrastination.

When difficulty starting may call for more support

Occasional delay does not by itself indicate a condition. If difficulty beginning is persistent, distressing, or interfering with important parts of life, consider talking with a qualified health professional about assessment or support. The association between ADHD symptoms and procrastination does not establish an individual diagnosis, and a quick-start strategy is not a substitute for clinical care. A randomized trial discussed behavioral activation and training in task initiation and termination as part of psychological treatments for adults with ADHD; it does not show that a five-minute start or any other brief tactic is itself a treatment.
