A neural-network epoch is one configured pass through the training data. The model usually processes that data in batches, making multiple optimizer updates during an epoch rather than one update for the whole dataset. The exact number of batches—and whether an epoch consumes every example—depends on the training setup.

How an epoch works

Training loops commonly have an outer cycle and an inner cycle. The outer cycle is the epoch; inside it, the model handles batches of training examples. For each batch, the model makes predictions, calculates a loss, computes gradients, and typically uses an optimizer to update its parameters. PyTorch describes an epoch as a pass over the dataset and shows these batch-level operations in its optimization tutorial and training tutorial.

For example, with 1,000 training examples and a batch size of 100, a conventional full pass takes 10 batches. That is arithmetic for this example, not a guarantee about every training run: a framework may keep or drop a final partial batch, sample data differently, distribute work, or use a configured step count.

Epoch, batch, and iteration: what each term counts

Term What it counts Typical role in training
Example or sample One training input, often paired with its target Part of a batch
Batch A group of examples processed together Handled inside an epoch; commonly followed by an optimizer update
Iteration or update step Often one batch-processing and update cycle in mini-batch training Repeated within an epoch
Epoch A configured pass or number of steps over training data The outer training-loop cycle

In mini-batch training, one epoch therefore usually contains several iterations or update steps. “Iteration” is not perfectly uniform across libraries and algorithms, so check the specific framework’s definition rather than assuming it always means an epoch or a single gradient update.

Does one epoch always use every training example?

Not necessarily. For a finite dataset and an ordinary full pass, an epoch generally means the training procedure has gone through the data once. But the framework’s input configuration can change what counts as one epoch. TensorFlow’s Keras Sequential API documentation defines an epoch as an iteration over the supplied input and target data unless steps_per_epoch is set to a different value. A custom step count can define an epoch by a specified number of batches, which is useful with generated or repeated datasets.

For a finite dataset with N examples and batch size B, a full pass usually requires about N/B batches. If N is not divisible by B, the final partial batch may be kept or dropped; the setting determines whether the count rounds up or down. Sampling, distributed training, and explicit step limits can also make the actual number of examples processed differ from a simple full pass.

How many epochs should training run?

There is no universally correct epoch count. More epochs mean more opportunities for the model to learn from the training data, but the count alone does not show whether the model is improving usefully or generalizing well. Monitor performance on validation data and use an appropriate stopping rule.

For example, scikit-learn’s MLPClassifier documentation describes stopping when improvement in training loss is insufficient, or when validation score stops improving if early stopping is enabled. It also documents learning-rate adjustments when improvement criteria are not met. These are framework-specific mechanisms, not a universal best epoch count.

One detail that varies by library

Some APIs use “iteration” to mean something other than a batch update. Scikit-learn notes that max_iter for stochastic MLP solvers determines epochs—the number of times each data point is used—not the number of gradient steps. When reading a parameter or training log, use that library’s documentation to interpret its terminology.
