A NAS can bring a large file library under your control, but it does not automatically replace cloud storage. It can keep files available on your home network and support local backup and synchronization; cloud storage can still provide an off-site copy and convenient access when home is out of reach. The useful question is not which one wins, but which jobs each one should do.

What a NAS changes—and what it does not

A network-attached storage (NAS) device is storage connected to a network. It can centralize household files and provide tools for managing, sharing, backing up, and accessing them. Synology describes these as core capabilities of its home NAS software, including access from outside the home when configured for it: Synology home NAS software.

That changes where the main library lives and who manages the hardware. It does not, by itself, create a copy somewhere else. If the NAS is damaged, stolen, or inaccessible because the home network is down, a file stored only on it may be unavailable too.

Why I would still keep a cloud role

Cloud storage can solve a different problem from the NAS: keeping data away from home. Synology documents backing up NAS data to cloud services, while TrueNAS documents scheduled or one-time transfers to cloud storage. In a hybrid setup, the NAS can hold the working library and a cloud destination can hold a separate copy for recovery if the local device or home is lost.

Synology DS225+ Private Cloud Media Server - Stream, Back Up Photos & Share Files, Intel CPU for Hardware Transcoding (2-Bay Diskless NAS)
  • Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
  • Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds
  • Creator-Grade Backup Solution - Protect your irreplaceable content with automated backups to cloud services, external drives and remote NAS
  • Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
  • Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring

Cloud services can also suit workflows that depend on provider-hosted availability or straightforward access away from home. A NAS may offer remote access, but that depends on its configuration and the connection back to the home network. Which arrangement is easier depends on the services and devices involved.

Sync is not the same as backup

Synchronization keeps locations aligned; backup is meant to preserve copies that can be recovered. If a change or deletion is synchronized, it may appear in the other location too. Whether that happens, and whether older versions remain available, depends on the particular application and its configuration.

Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS925+ (Diskless)
  • Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
  • Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
  • Sync: Keeps files in two or more places up to date. It is useful for working across devices, but do not assume it protects against unwanted changes or deletions.
  • Backup: Stores recoverable copies, ideally with version history or retention controls. Check what the backup tool keeps and how long it keeps it.
  • Transfer: Copies or moves files between locations. The task type matters: TrueNAS distinguishes COPY, which duplicates source files; SYNC, which keeps locations aligned; and MOVE, which transfers files and deletes the source. See TrueNAS Cloud Sync task types.

Synology likewise distinguishes Cloud Sync, which supports one- or two-way synchronization with public accounts, from Hyper Backup, which offers versioned backups as well as compression and deduplication. The product descriptions are useful for understanding the tools, but check the settings in the application you actually use: Cloud Sync and Hyper Backup.

A NAS alone is not an off-site backup

Synology recommends the 3-2-1 backup strategy: three copies of data, two storage mediums, and one off-site copy. This is vendor guidance, not a measured guarantee of safety. Its practical point is that another copy on the same device—or another device kept in the same home—may still be exposed to the same local disaster. Read Synology’s explanation of the 3-2-1 approach.

  • Secure private cloud - Enjoy 100% data ownership and multi-platform access from anywhere
  • Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
  • Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
  • Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
  • 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates

Synology’s Backup & Data Protection page puts the first step simply: “A local backup is the first step to protecting your data.” A local backup is useful, but it does not replace a separate off-site copy: Synology Backup & Data Protection.

How to decide what belongs in each place

There is no universal break-even point for NAS hardware versus recurring cloud storage charges. A fair comparison depends on your storage volume, location, device costs, internet access, and how much setup and maintenance you are willing to handle. The available vendor material does not establish an independent price comparison.

Need NAS Cloud storage Hybrid approach
Large central file library Can keep a household library on local network storage; capacity depends on the hardware and drives chosen. Capacity and recurring charges depend on the provider and plan. Keep the main library on the NAS and select critical data for an off-site copy.
Access away from home Possible with remote access configured; availability depends on the home connection and setup. Provider-hosted access can suit workflows that need files outside the home. Use the option that best fits the file and task; do not assume every NAS file is reachable during a home outage.
Recovery from accidental changes Depends on the backup software, versioning, and retention settings—not merely having a NAS. Depends on the service’s backup or version-history features and settings; sync alone may mirror changes. Use a backup with recoverable versions, then verify how the off-site copy handles deletions and retention.
Recovery from a home disaster A NAS kept at home does not provide an off-site copy. A cloud copy can be off-site, subject to the service and backup configuration. Keep a separate copy outside the home, in the cloud or another suitable location.
Setup and upkeep Requires selecting hardware and drives, initial network setup, and ongoing management. QNAP lists upfront hardware and drive costs and initial network setup among potential challenges. Requires choosing and managing a service; costs and capabilities vary by provider and plan. Adds more than one system to configure, but separates local storage from off-site recovery.

The table describes general roles, not a neutral product or price ranking. QNAP’s discussion of NAS tradeoffs is a vendor source, and Synology notes that model choice depends on storage and performance needs: QNAP’s NAS and cloud overview and Synology NAS selector.

Build a setup around the failure you want to survive

  1. List the files that matter. Separate irreplaceable documents and photos from files you can download or recreate. This helps determine what needs backup and how much capacity you need.
  2. Choose where the working library belongs. A NAS can make sense when a substantial local library, household sharing, or local access is important. A cloud service may remain more convenient for files that need provider-hosted availability or easy access across locations.
  3. Choose a real backup method. Confirm whether the tool creates recoverable copies or simply synchronizes changes. Check version history, deletion behavior, and retention before trusting it with important data.
  4. Put one copy off-site. Backing up NAS data to cloud storage is one documented option; a separate off-site location can serve the same broad purpose. Do not count a second device in the same home as protection from a home-wide event.
  5. Test recovery. Restore a sample file or version so you know where it is, how to retrieve it, and whether the result meets your needs. A backup that has never been checked may not behave as expected when you need it.

A NAS also brings hardware and setup decisions. QNAP identifies upfront enclosure and drive costs and initial network setup as challenges, while Synology says the right model depends on capacity and performance requirements. Those vendor statements do not establish a universal cost advantage. Compare the full setup for your own capacity and region rather than assuming the NAS becomes cheaper after a particular number of years.
