Yes—but only in a limited, experimental sense. Tilefinch is a current browser project that runs directly on a homebrew-capable PlayStation Portable, without sending pages through a proxy or companion computer. Its maintainer targets the PSP’s 64 MB memory mode and identifies the PSP-3000 as the tested model. PSP-2000 and PSP Go are expected to work but are not qualified, while the PSP-1000 is unsupported.
The built-in Sony Internet Browser remains useful for simple, compatible pages. It is not a modern-web upgrade, however: its legacy NetFront engine, restricted memory and outdated TLS and certificate support can prevent current sites from loading even when the PSP connects to Wi-Fi successfully.
What “modern browser” means on a PSP
A modern browser for the PSP does not mean Chrome- or Firefox-level compatibility. The practical definition is a browser project that is still maintained for PSP hardware and can attempt newer pages than Sony’s original software. Tilefinch fits that description, but it is experimental and has strict prerequisites.

- The PSP must support homebrew or custom firmware.
- The project requires the 64 MB memory mode.
- The maintainer has tested a PSP-3000; other model claims are expectations, not independent test results.
Even with Tilefinch, the PSP remains limited by its processor, memory, display and wireless hardware. A page may load but still be unusable if it depends on heavy JavaScript, modern media, large downloads or features the browser engine does not implement.

Check your PSP model before installing anything
| PSP model | Project status | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| PSP-3000 | Tested by Tilefinch’s maintainer | The clearest target for trying the project, although it remains experimental. |
| PSP-2000 | Expected to work, not qualified | Compatibility is possible but not confirmed by the maintainer’s stated testing. |
| PSP Go | Expected to work, not qualified | Do not treat the expectation as a guarantee. |
| PSP-1000 | Unsupported | Tilefinch is not a suitable option for this model. |
| PSP-E1000 (Street) | No Wi-Fi hardware | It cannot browse online directly; only offline software or locally stored content is realistic. |
Find the model identification on the console and confirm it before changing firmware or buying storage. The model decision matters more than the browser file itself.
Tilefinch requirements and installation
You need a PSP that can run homebrew/custom firmware, a working Memory Stick, wireless access and the required 64 MB memory mode. Tilefinch’s maintainer recommends about 20 MB of free storage for normal browsing and updates.
- Download the PSP ZIP from the Tilefinch project’s current distribution source.
- Extract the archive without renaming or removing its internal files.
- Connect the Memory Stick to a computer and open the PSP’s
PSP/GAME/directory. - Copy the complete
TILEFINCHfolder into that directory. The launcher should end up atPSP/GAME/TILEFINCH/EBOOT.PBP. - Safely disconnect the Memory Stick, start the PSP and open the homebrew launcher from the game menu.
- Establish Wi-Fi on the PSP, then start Tilefinch and test a simple, mostly text-based page before attempting complex sites.
A PSP-compatible Memory Stick or compatible microSD adapter is relevant only if your existing card lacks capacity. Extra storage does not improve TLS support, rendering capability or connection speed.

What the built-in Sony browser can still do
Sony’s documentation describes the Internet Browser as a way to view web pages and provides controls for JavaScript, Flash, cookies, cache, proxy settings and memory use. The browser can be launched from the PSP’s Network menu after wireless access is configured.
Sony warns that some page images and animations may not display correctly. Its memory-conservation option can help larger pages fit in available memory, but it lowers image quality. Sony’s documented cache settings list a maximum of 2048 KB (in the 2021 guide), which is tiny by current web standards.
These controls are compatibility and troubleshooting switches, not an engine replacement. Enabling JavaScript or changing the cache cannot add modern encryption protocols or implement missing browser APIs.

Choosing between the available approaches
| Option | Best use | Requirements | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony Internet Browser | Quick access to lightweight, older or specially simplified pages | No homebrew; configure Wi-Fi and use the Network menu | Legacy NetFront rendering, constrained memory and outdated TLS/certificate support; media may fail. |
| Tilefinch | The most current PSP-specific project documented for on-device browsing | Homebrew/custom firmware, 64 MB memory mode, supported storage and Wi-Fi | Experimental; PSP-3000 is the only model identified as tested, and site compatibility will vary. |
| Opera Mini through PSPKVM | A possible lightweight fallback using server-side page rendering | Homebrew PSPKVM and the old Java ME client | Depends on Opera’s proxy servers still accepting that obsolete client; present-day operation is unverified. |
Use five checks when deciding: your exact model, whether you are prepared to run homebrew, whether you want on-device rendering or proxy dependence, the site’s current TLS and content requirements, and the storage and setup effort.
Troubleshooting common failures
Wi-Fi connects, but the page will not open
Separate network access from web compatibility. A successful wireless connection does not prove that the browser supports the site’s TLS handshake, certificate chain, redirects or scripts. Try a simple HTTP or lightweight page first, then test with Tilefinch if your model and firmware meet its requirements.
A large page shows a blank screen or runs out of memory
On Sony’s browser, enable memory conservation and reduce image quality expectations. Disable JavaScript for pages that do not need it, clear the cache, and avoid media-heavy sites. Tilefinch still has finite PSP memory; a newer engine cannot remove that hardware limit.

Tilefinch is missing from the game menu
Verify the folder nesting. The executable must be exactly PSP/GAME/TILEFINCH/EBOOT.PBP, not inside an extra folder created during extraction. Confirm that the PSP is actually running compatible homebrew/custom firmware and that the Memory Stick is readable.
The PSP-E1000 cannot browse
The Street model has no Wi-Fi hardware. No browser installation can add a wireless radio, so use it for offline content instead.

Tilefinch is the strongest answer to the literal question “Is there an updated browser for the PSP?” because it is a current, PSP-specific project with installation guidance. It is not a universal solution: its compatibility statements come from the maintainer, not independent testing, and the project does not turn unsupported models into modern web devices.
Best Value
- Sony PSP 3000 International Console, Fully Technician Tested.
For occasional text pages, the stock browser may be sufficient and requires no firmware changes. For experimentation on a PSP-3000 with suitable homebrew support, Tilefinch is the option with the clearest current path. Opera Mini through PSPKVM should be treated as a historical possibility rather than a dependable 2026 recommendation until its proxy service is verified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a modern browser on a PSP-1000?
No. Tilefinch’s maintainer lists the PSP-1000 as unsupported. The original Sony browser remains available, but its legacy engine and security limitations still apply.
Does Tilefinch require a proxy or PC?
The project documentation says Tilefinch runs on the PSP without a proxy or companion PC. You still need Wi-Fi for online pages.
Recommended Free Tools
Will a larger Memory Stick make websites compatible?
No. Tilefinch recommends about 20 MB free for browsing and updates, but storage capacity does not fix TLS, JavaScript, rendering or memory limitations.
