It could reach Earth, but NASA has not committed to a return date or a final mission plan in the cited 2026 documents. Perseverance collected and sealed a sample from the Cheyava Falls rock in Jezero Crater. NASA says the rock’s features may help scientists investigate whether ancient Mars hosted microscopic life; they are not proof that life existed. The sample remains on Mars, and its eventual return is uncertain—not confirmed canceled forever.
Why the Cheyava Falls sample matters
NASA identifies Cheyava Falls as a rock with features relevant to the question of whether Mars was once home to microscopic life. Perseverance collected a sample from the rock in July 2024 and sealed it as part of the rover’s sample-caching work. A potentially interesting rock is not the same thing as a life discovery: minerals, organic compounds, or textures can have nonbiological explanations, which scientists would need to test.
NASA’s Perseverance mission began after the rover landed on Mars on February 18, 2021. In an inventory reported as of October 2024, NASA said Perseverance had driven more than 30 kilometers (18.65 miles) and collected 24 rock and regolith samples plus one air sample. Those are dated figures, not a current 2026 inventory.

Perseverance can examine rocks with its onboard instruments, but a rover has limited instruments, power, and opportunities for analysis. Returning sealed material would let laboratories on Earth apply a broader range of sophisticated techniques, compare results, and preserve material for later scientists to study with technologies that do not yet exist. NASA describes the purpose as investigating Mars’s geological history and looking for indications of past life.
#1 Best Overall
- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- MARS ROVER PERSEVERANCE & INGENUITY HELICOPTER – 4.5 Sheet Model with a challenging difficulty level. Assembled Size: Rover: 4.92 L x 3.54 W x 2.95 H inches. Helicopter: 1.02 L x 1.30 W x 0.79 H inches. 1:30 Scale.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
That makes the Cheyava Falls sample scientifically valuable even though there is no guarantee it will be returned. Its potential matters because Earth-based analysis could examine questions the rover cannot settle as fully; it does not mean that the sample is expected to prove life existed.
What happened to the Mars Sample Return plan?
NASA’s January 2025 announcement described two candidate approaches for the mission’s landing and retrieval elements. The agency said it would pursue both during formulation and expected to confirm the program and its design in the second half of 2026. That was a planned decision timetable, not confirmation that an architecture had been selected, funded, or approved for flight.

| Candidate approach in NASA’s January 2025 announcement | What NASA said | What was not established |
|---|---|---|
| Previously flown landing designs | A lander would use designs flown before, such as the sky crane. | The announcement did not establish a final mission selection or provide comparative cost, schedule, or risk figures. |
| Commercial landing capabilities | A lander would use commercial capabilities. | The announcement did not establish a selected provider or provide comparative cost, schedule, or risk figures. |
| Shared element in both approaches | Both relied on the European Space Agency’s Earth Return Orbiter to capture the orbiting sample container. ESA was evaluating NASA’s plan. | The announcement did not establish that the orbiter or the overall return mission had been approved as a final, funded architecture. |
NASA’s proposal described an orbiting sample container with capacity for 30 sample tubes. That was the proposed container’s capacity—not the number of samples Perseverance had collected, and not evidence that the proposal became the adopted mission design.
What do NASA’s 2026 documents say about the sample’s future?
Two later NASA documents make the return outlook less certain than the 2025 decision timetable might suggest. NASA’s FY 2027 budget request, published in April 2026, says subsequent missions could retrieve
Perseverance’s sealed samples and return them to Earth. The conditional wording describes a possibility, not a scheduled retrieval.

A NASA Planetary Mission Senior Review final report dated March 2, 2026 uses the phrase With the termination of Mars Sample Return (MSR)
in a discussion of options for Perseverance’s future science work. That is significant language in the report’s planning context, but it does not by itself establish that the samples are permanently abandoned or that no future U.S. or international return effort can happen.
Taken together, the cited documents do not establish a current, committed return architecture or an expected Earth-arrival year. They also do not establish whether NASA made the second-half-of-2026 design decision it had forecast in January 2025. The evidence supports uncertainty, not a definite prediction that the sample will or will not reach Earth.

What “abandoned” means—and does not mean
The sample is cached on Mars, not already in an Earth laboratory. Calling it “abandoned” can describe the risk that the prior return plan may not proceed, but it overstates what is known if it means the specimen has been irretrievably discarded or that every future return possibility is closed. NASA’s 2026 materials leave open the possibility of later missions while offering no committed return plan in those documents.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said on April 15, 2024, Mars Sample Return will be one of the most complex missions NASA has ever undertaken. The bottom line is, an $11 billion budget is too expensive, and a 2040 return date is too far away,
describing NASA’s assessment of an earlier plan. Those figures are historical planning context, not the cost or schedule of a newly approved mission.
