Kingdom Hearts’ portable era was not one kind of game squeezed onto smaller screens. From the Nintendo DS and PSP to mobile phones and the 3DS, Square Enix used handheld platforms for different stories and formats: Roxas’s time with Organization XIII, a three-protagonist prequel, a mobile adventure inside Jiminy’s Journal, and Sora and Riku’s Mark of Mastery exam. Today, the official collections preserve those works unevenly: some are playable games, while others are presented as HD cutscene compilations.
Why Kingdom Hearts went portable
In 2007, Square Enix announced three projects for three different portable platforms: 358/2 Days for Nintendo DS, Birth by Sleep for PSP, and Coded for mobile phones. The announcement made their differences part of the pitch rather than presenting them as interchangeable spin-offs. It highlighted DS multiplayer missions, three protagonist scenarios on PSP, and delivery of a role-playing game to mobile phones. Square Enix’s 2007 announcement also named Tetsuya Nomura as director of 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep, and identified h.a.n.d. as a production company for 358/2 Days.

The result was a portable period defined by experiments in story and structure. These entries filled in different parts of the larger saga, but the platform shaped how each one was presented—and affects how players can revisit it now.

| Entry | Original platform and format | Story focus | How it is represented in current official collections |
|---|---|---|---|
| 358/2 Days | Nintendo DS; Square Enix highlighted mission-based multiplayer. | Roxas’s previously untold time in Organization XIII, including his friendship with Axel. | HD cutscene compilation, not a playable remaster. |
| Birth by Sleep | PSP; announced as three scenarios built around three protagonists. | A story set before Sora took up the Keyblade, framed as a beginning connected to the larger saga. | Birth by Sleep Final Mix is listed as a game. |
| Coded / Re:coded | Coded began as a mobile-phone role-playing game. | After Kingdom Hearts II, Jiminy finds a mysterious message in his journal; the characters investigate a data version of the journal. | Re:coded is listed as an HD cutscene compilation, not a playable remake of the original mobile game. |
| Dream Drop Distance | Nintendo 3DS; later remastered in HD for console. | Sora and Riku take the Mark of Mastery exam. | Dream Drop Distance HD is listed as a remaster. |
The distinctions in the table reflect Square Enix’s original announcements and present-day product listings, rather than a comparison based on hands-on play. The publisher’s 2007 descriptions are in its project announcement; the current formats are identified on its collection page and HD 2.8 page.

What each game added to the saga
358/2 Days: Roxas’s Organization XIII story
Square Enix introduced 358/2 Days as the story of Roxas, the other protagonist whose time in Organization XIII had not yet been told. Its premise put his duties in the organization and his friendship with Axel at the center. The DS version was also pitched around missions that could be played in multiplayer, giving the portable entry a format-specific feature alongside its story.
Birth by Sleep: three perspectives before Sora
Birth by Sleep looked further back in the series timeline. Square Enix described it as three scenarios starring three new protagonists, set before Sora took up the Keyblade. The PSP release was presented as a larger, multi-perspective story, with the original announcement calling attention to the system’s graphics capabilities and storage. Its three-scenario structure is the clearest contrast with the mission framing of 358/2 Days.

Coded and Re:coded: a mobile story inside a journal
Coded was the mobile-phone project announced in 2007. Its story starts after Kingdom Hearts II, when Jiminy Cricket discovers a mysterious message in his journal and the characters investigate a data version of it. Keep the names distinct: Coded refers to the original mobile-phone project, while Re:coded is the title used in the current collection listing. That listing offers an HD cutscene compilation; it does not identify a playable remake of the mobile game.
Dream Drop Distance: Sora and Riku’s exam
The portable period reached the Nintendo 3DS with Dream Drop Distance. Square Enix says the game was originally released in 2012 and describes its HD edition as a remaster of the portable game. Its story follows Sora and Riku taking the Mark of Mastery exam; the publisher characterizes the action and exploration as faster-paced. Those are Square Enix’s descriptions, not a claim of comparative hands-on testing.

How to revisit the portable era now
The current official collections do not preserve every portable game in its original playable form. KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- lists 358/2 Days and Re:coded as HD cutscene compilations, but lists Birth by Sleep Final Mix as a game. KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue includes Dream Drop Distance HD, the χ Back Cover movie, and the playable 0.2 Birth by Sleep episode. Square Enix describes the 3DS title’s HD version as a remaster that brought the portable game to console for the first time. See the publisher’s collection listings and HD 2.8 product page for the official contents.
- For a playable version of the prequel, look for Birth by Sleep Final Mix in the collection listing.
- For the 3DS adventure in an HD remaster, look for Dream Drop Distance HD in HD 2.8.
- For 358/2 Days or Re:coded in these collections, expect a cutscene compilation rather than the original portable gameplay.
- Collection editions and availability can vary by platform and region, and a listing does not guarantee current retailer stock.
This distinction matters if the goal is to experience the original mechanics, not just follow the plot. The collection pages identify the format provided; they do not claim to reproduce every portable release as a playable version.

The platform range reflects the period’s variety: mission multiplayer on DS, a three-scenario PSP prequel, a mobile-phone role-playing project, and a 3DS entry later remastered for console. Each offered a different route into the series’ timeline, and their present-day collection formats preserve that history in different ways.
Square Enix reported more than 11 million series shipments in its 2007 announcement, a historical shipment figure covering approximately the five and a half years after the original game’s 2002 release. The company’s 2025 annual report later gave a figure of more than 38 million global package shipments and digital sales. Those measures differ—shipments alone versus shipments combined with digital sales—so they should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison. Square Enix Holdings’ 2025 annual report provides the later figure.
