VitVio, a London/US-European health-tech startup, is deploying its Vetro camera-and-sensor platform in selected operating rooms at University Clinical Centre Gdańsk (UCK) in Poland. Distributor Medim is coordinating the installation, which is expected to begin in a limited set of rooms and could later extend across the operating block.
Vetro is designed as an institutional workflow and documentation system, not a consumer security camera. It builds a live spatial model of the theatre, identifies case milestones and room conditions, and sends status information to perioperative teams.
What UCK Gdańsk is receiving
UCK is described as the first Polish hospital to take Vetro. The Next Web reports that the centre has 1,241 beds and 4,834 employees. The initial deployment is limited to selected operating rooms; neither VitVio nor the hospital has published results from the Gdańsk installation, and there is no announced timetable for a hospital-wide rollout.
Medim, a Polish medical-equipment distributor, is handling installation. The project is intended to start locally so the hospital and supplier can assess the system in its own operating environment before any wider expansion.

How Vetro works in an operating room
A multi-sensor view rather than a single video feed
VitVio says Vetro combines several cameras, ambient sensors and 3D spatial intelligence. The system maintains a live geometric model of the room: where people, equipment and other relevant objects are located, and how the room changes during a case. Its purpose is to interpret workflow context rather than simply store video.
Recognising the case timeline
The platform is designed to recognise and log milestones including wheels-in, induction, incision and closure. It can also track room and equipment context, identify delays and share status with perioperative teams. The resulting timeline is intended to replace or supplement manual updates that staff already enter during a case.
Connecting with hospital software
Vetro’s official product information says workflow data can be written to hospital systems such as Epic and Cerner. In practice, that could give scheduling, nursing and perioperative teams a common status view without requiring someone to call or update several systems manually. The exact interfaces, implementation work and data fields for UCK have not been made public.

Is Vetro monitoring surgeons?
VitVio presents Vetro as team-level workflow support, not an employee-ranking tool. COO Maks Kozarzewski said: “Vetro records a timeline of each case: the same milestones nurses already log by hand, such as patient entry, incision and closure. It doesn’t score or rank individual staff.”
That distinction matters. A system that records when a room is ready, when a case starts or when equipment is in position can help identify process bottlenecks. A system that attributes every delay to a named clinician would create a different form of workplace surveillance. VitVio says Vetro’s outputs describe cases, phases and equipment rather than judging individual performance.
Those statements describe the product’s intended use, not an independent audit of how every hospital might configure or access it. UCK’s governance rules, user permissions and policies for using workflow data in staff management have not been published.

What the company says about patient privacy
Privacy-by-architecture claims
VitVio says faces and personal identities are not required for Vetro to perform its workflow analysis. The company also says original footage is generally discarded shortly after processing, with the system producing operational information about a case rather than a permanent video archive.

Processing and retention reported by Tech.eu
Tech.eu reported in 2026 that processing takes place on the hospital side, with pixelation and deletion of original footage. It said de-identified data is usually retained for seven days and that a small proportion of anonymised clips may be kept to verify detection. These arrangements were reported as company statements, not as findings from an independently audited privacy assessment.
Questions hospitals still need to answer
Public information does not fully specify retention exceptions, hosting architecture, access logs, administrator privileges or the contractual rules governing secondary use. Before a broader rollout, those details should be documented in the hospital’s procurement and data-governance materials, along with a clear separation between operational improvement and individual employee evaluation.

Why hospitals are interested in workflow cameras
Operating theatres lose capacity when rooms, staff, instruments or patients are not ready at the expected time. A continuously updated timeline could help teams see whether a delay occurred during preparation, turnover, equipment handling or another phase, and could make the status of a case visible to people working outside the room.
The context is a workforce shortage. The Next Web has reported an EU-wide shortfall of about 1.2 million doctors, nurses and midwives, although its article does not identify a primary statistical publisher for that figure. Automation that reduces manual status calls and duplicate documentation may therefore be attractive even if it does not replace clinical work.

Kozarzewski described the approach this way: “We prove results in their own rooms and improve multiple challenges they face in the OR before asking them to scale.” That is a deployment philosophy, not evidence that the Gdańsk project has already improved utilisation, waiting times or patient safety.

What is known—and not yet known—about results
- Known: the first Polish deployment is planned for selected UCK rooms, with Medim coordinating installation.
- Known: Vetro is intended to recognise workflow phases, room and equipment context, delays and status updates.
- Known: VitVio says the system does not score or rank individual staff.
- Not yet published: measured changes in operating-room utilisation, turnover time, case delays, documentation workload, patient safety or waiting lists at UCK.
- Not yet published: the installation’s cost, integration schedule, exact retention policy and access model.
The regulatory and governance issue
The central policy question is whether a workflow system can remain genuinely separate from worker evaluation once its data enters hospital operations. The Next Web reported that the EU AI Act category covering systems intended to monitor and evaluate workers’ performance was delayed until December 2027. That reported timetable does not remove the need for hospitals to define their own safeguards now.
For UCK, practical protections will depend on who can view event timelines, whether records can be exported, how long different data types are retained and whether managers may use the information in performance decisions. Those implementation details are still open.
Why the Polish rollout matters
Vetro’s arrival at UCK is an early test of whether computer vision and spatial sensing can improve operating-room coordination without turning clinical spaces into permanent staff-monitoring environments. VitVio has reported $10 million in total funding, including an $8 million seed round closed in October 2025; Tech.eu independently reported those figures in 2026. The company now has to demonstrate that its privacy design, integrations and workflow insights work under real hospital conditions.
For readers, the immediate takeaway is limited but concrete: a Polish hospital is beginning a controlled deployment of AI-enabled cameras and sensors, not announcing a proven productivity breakthrough. The evidence that will matter next is measured performance from the participating rooms and transparent documentation of how images, derived data and staff access are governed.
