Los Angeles residents reported a severe mosquito nuisance in 2026, while Los Angeles County had recorded more than 180 West Nile virus cases by October 11, according to The Guardian. That is a report-date snapshot, not the final count for a season that was still underway. The headline’s “taken over” phrasing captures residents’ experience; it is not a measured finding that mosquitoes had infested the entire county.

The reported increase reflects seasonal conditions and more than one kind of mosquito. The distinction matters: Culex mosquitoes can spread West Nile virus after feeding on infected birds, while invasive Aedes mosquitoes bite people and can spread other viruses. A bad bite season, West Nile activity and local dengue transmission are related concerns, but they are not the same thing.

What happened in Los Angeles in 2026?

On October 11, 2026, The Guardian reported that Los Angeles County had documented more than 180 West Nile cases that year, describing the count as the highest in nearly a decade. Because mosquito season was still in progress when the article appeared, the figure should be read as a snapshot rather than the final 2026 tally. The article also quoted residents describing mosquitoes as an unusually severe nuisance; those accounts convey individual experiences, not a countywide survey.

The report linked increased mosquito activity to a warm winter and hot, humid, moist conditions, and quoted a local vector-control official discussing environmental conditions. These are reported explanations for the season, not proof that one weather factor alone caused the activity. The Guardian also reported that an Orange County vector-control district had about 850 trap collections test positive for West Nile virus. That means positive mosquito collections from 850 traps—not 850 individual mosquitoes—and it is an Orange County figure, not an LA County count.

Which mosquitoes are biting, and what risks do they carry?

Culex mosquitoes and West Nile virus

Culex quinquefasciatus, locally nicknamed “quinx,” commonly feeds on birds. A mosquito can acquire West Nile virus from an infected bird, including a crow, and later transmit it to a person. This is the mosquito-virus pathway behind the West Nile case figures in the 2026 reporting.

Invasive Aedes mosquitoes and repeated bites

Invasive Aedes mosquitoes are described as human-targeting “ankle biters” that can bite repeatedly and breed in very small amounts of water. They are associated with dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever—not identified in this reporting as the West Nile vector. Their tendency to use small water containers near homes makes them a distinct nuisance and prevention concern.

Has dengue spread locally in Los Angeles?

Yes, local dengue transmission has been documented in Los Angeles County, but the established cases described here occurred in 2024; they do not show that dengue was spreading locally in 2026. A CDC Emerging Infectious Diseases investigation published in 2026 identified 14 locally acquired cases in the county from August through November 2024. Six patients required hospitalization. The investigators found short transmission chains after introductions associated with returning travelers, including evidence of ongoing transmission for up to seven weeks in one neighborhood.

The same investigation recorded 222 travel-associated dengue cases in the LA County Department of Public Health jurisdiction in 2024, compared with 35 in 2022 and 75 in 2023. The CDC paper notes that most dengue cases in the continental United States occur in returning travelers. Local transmission is possible where competent Aedes mosquitoes are present, but the 2024 investigation is not evidence of a current outbreak.

In the 2024 investigation, response activities focused around patients’ residences within the mosquitoes’ limited flight range, approximately 150 meters. The authors cautioned that not detecting dengue-positive mosquito pools does not rule out transmission: mosquito infection prevalence can be very low.

How can you reduce mosquitoes around your home?

Remove water where mosquitoes can breed

LA County advises removing standing water at least once a week and after rain. Check buckets, planters and trash containers, along with other small containers that can hold water. A small amount can be enough for Aedes mosquitoes to breed.

Block bites indoors and outdoors

Keep screens on open windows and doors, and cover exposed skin when practical. The county lists repellents with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or its active ingredient PMD, IR3535, and 2-undecanone. Choose an EPA-registered product and follow its label directions for the intended use.

OLE or PMD in an EPA-registered repellent is not the same as pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil. LA County does not recommend the pure essential oil as an insect repellent because it has not undergone the same validated safety and efficacy testing and is not registered as a repellent. See the county’s mosquito prevention guidance.

What are local agencies doing about mosquitoes?

The Guardian described several approaches that serve different purposes: removing breeding habitat, adulticide spraying in major problem areas, and experimental releases of sterile male mosquitoes in targeted areas. Habitat removal addresses breeding sites; spraying targets adult mosquitoes; sterile-male releases are a targeted experimental measure focused on Aedes aegypti. They are not interchangeable methods, and none should be treated as a guarantee of eliminating mosquitoes across a neighborhood.

According to The Guardian, some experimental sites saw targeted populations reduced by more than 80%. The report also quoted an estimated $30,000 cost for an experimental program covering 25 acres in the San Gabriel Valley. Those figures describe reported experimental results and a specific program estimate, not a guaranteed outcome or standard price for a local intervention. Vector-control work can also face access barriers: a district official told The Guardian that not everyone allows staff onto their property.

How to choose personal protection or assess a control option

For a repellent, compare the active ingredient, whether the exact product formulation is EPA-registered, its label directions, and whether it suits the exposure and household. The county guidance identifies active ingredients but does not rank brands or establish one best product.

For community control, the useful questions are what the intervention targets—breeding habitat, larvae or adult mosquitoes—which species and area it covers, what evidence supports it, what it costs, and which agency administers it. A response aimed at one species or neighborhood should not be assumed to control all mosquito activity countywide.
