Yes, you can carry a Linux desktop on a USB drive and boot it on other computers without installing anything on their internal disks. The important qualification is that “the same on any PC” is too strong: firmware settings, CPU architecture, graphics and Wi‑Fi drivers, Secure Boot rules, and USB-boot support determine whether the drive starts and how well the desktop works.
What a USB Linux desktop actually is
A USB Linux desktop is usually one of three different setups. A standard live USB starts a Linux image in memory and normally leaves the host computer’s installation untouched. A persistent live USB adds a file or partition that stores selected changes between sessions. A full installation on external USB storage behaves more like a conventional Linux system, with normal package management and a complete home directory.
Ubuntu’s Desktop documentation describes a live USB as a way to “Test out the Ubuntu Desktop experience without touching your PC configuration” and to “Boot into Ubuntu on a borrowed machine.” That documentation, updated October 13, 2026, lists an 8GB USB stick or larger as the minimum for its image. Writing the image erases the selected drive, so copy off anything you need first.
Choose the USB method that matches your goal

How to build a portable Linux USB
1. Select and prepare the drive
Use a reputable, high-capacity USB drive. Ubuntu’s documented minimum is 8GB, but a persistent desktop needs room for the operating system, saved packages, updates, and files. A larger drive also gives a full external installation more breathing space. Back up the drive before proceeding: Canonical warns that the image-writing process “will overwrite and destroy all data stored there.”

2. Download and verify the Linux image
Get the ISO from the distribution’s official download page. Where the project publishes checksums, verify the downloaded file before writing it. This catches incomplete downloads and tampered files before they become a boot problem.
3. Write the image

On Ubuntu, open the Disks utility, select the intended USB device, and use its option to restore or write a disk image.

On Windows, Rufus can write the ISO to the selected USB drive. balenaEtcher is another graphical writer available on multiple desktop platforms.

Confirm the destination device by its capacity and name before accepting the erase warning. Do not select an internal disk.

Wait for the writer to finish and safely eject the drive.
A normally written live image is not automatically persistent. If you reboot without configuring persistence, files, installed packages, and most settings from that session are lost.
4. Add persistence when you need saved changes
Choose a distribution and image that document persistent-live support. Create the persistence file or partition using the method required by that image. Ventoy’s persistence guide documents support for selected Linux live ISOs; when configured correctly, it can preserve packages, Wi‑Fi profiles, and files across reboots. Support is not universal, and the writable overlay may have a fixed size or feature limitations.

With Ventoy, install Ventoy to the USB once, copy several ISO files to its data partition, and use its boot menu to select one at startup. For a supported ISO, map the appropriate persistence file or partition according to Ventoy’s documented configuration. Treat each ISO’s compatibility instructions as authoritative rather than assuming that every image will save changes.

5. Boot a target computer from USB

Insert the USB drive while the computer is powered off or restarting.

Open the one-time boot menu. Ubuntu notes that F12 is common, but the key varies by manufacturer; Esc, F9, F10, or F11 are also used on some systems.

Select the USB device and choose the UEFI entry when the firmware offers both UEFI and legacy choices. Use the same mode consistently if you later install a full system.

If the USB is missing, enter firmware setup and check that USB boot is enabled, the boot order allows removable media, and Secure Boot policy is compatible with the image.

Why one drive does not behave identically everywhere
Firmware mode and Secure Boot
A computer can refuse a perfectly written USB if it is configured to boot only from an approved device or only in a particular firmware mode. Switching between UEFI and legacy/CSM can also change which bootloader entry appears. Secure Boot may accept an officially signed image but reject a modified boot chain or an unsigned driver.
CPU architecture
Ubuntu documents support for ordinary PC hardware and older Intel Macs. Apple Silicon Macs are a separate case: Linux support relies on the Ubuntu Asahi community project and depends on the exact Mac model. A USB prepared for x86-64 PCs should not be described as universally bootable on ARM-based Apple hardware.
Graphics, Wi‑Fi, displays, and power management
The kernel may boot while a particular graphics adapter, wireless chipset, touchpad, suspend state, audio device, or external monitor behaves differently. Display scaling and proprietary-driver requirements can make the desktop look unlike the session you used on another machine. Test these functions before treating the USB as a dependable daily environment.
Test the drive before relying on it
- Boot path: Confirm that each intended computer can see the USB and starts it in the expected firmware mode.
- Network: Connect to Wi‑Fi and verify that the saved profile returns after a reboot if persistence is enabled.
- Graphics: Check resolution, scaling, external displays, video playback, and suspend/resume.
- Storage: Create a test file, reboot, and confirm that it remains only when persistence or a full installation is configured.
- Recovery: Keep the original ISO and a second rescue medium available in case the main drive is lost or corrupted.
No authoritative source cited here publishes a universal boot-success rate, speed benchmark, or flash-lifespan figure. Results depend on the USB hardware, port, image, firmware, and workload, so test the exact combination you plan to use.

Protect the data on a portable system
A removable desktop can be lost, overwritten, or physically damaged more easily than an internal installation. Keep backups of documents and configuration files somewhere other than the USB. Do not use the only copy of critical data as a persistence store, and label the drive clearly so it is not mistaken for disposable installation media.
The practical verdict
For testing Linux, troubleshooting a computer, or using a borrowed compatible PC, a standard live USB is the safest and simplest choice. Choose persistence when you specifically need files, packages, and settings to survive reboots and your chosen image supports it. Choose a full external installation when you need a more complete everyday desktop and accept greater sensitivity to firmware, bootloader, drivers, and flash wear. Ventoy is useful when one drive must carry several ISOs, but its persistence and hardware compatibility remain image-specific.
The accurate promise is portability across compatible x86-64 PCs—not an identical desktop on every computer.
