A fossil foot bone bearing 16 tooth marks offers evidence that a smaller tyrannosaurid fed on a much larger one—but not that it killed it. The researchers interpret the marks as most consistent with scavenging. The animal may have eaten a member of its own species, but the fossil does not establish that identity, and “baby” overstates what is known about its age.
What the fossil shows
The evidence is a partial left second metatarsal, a foot bone catalogued as BDM 124, from Montana’s Judith River Formation. Josephine Nielsen, Denver Fowler, Taia Wyenberg-Henzler, Aase Roland Jacobsen and Christof Pearce documented 16 distinct tooth marks on it in a 2026 paper in Evolving Earth. They used a tooth-mark classification system, high-resolution 3D surface scans and morphometric analyses to study the traces. The paper interprets the marks’ size and spacing as evidence that a small tyrannosaurid fed on a significantly larger one.
This is evidence preserved on a bone, not a snapshot of an attack. The fossil records contact between teeth and bone; researchers infer the feeding behavior from the marks’ pattern and condition.
Was it a baby T. rex?
“Baby” is not a precise age designation established for BDM 124. The research supports calling the feeder a smaller or juvenile tyrannosaurid, but the exact age is not established in the cited material. A 2026 Journal of Paleontology discussion of the study reports estimated lengths of about 5.8 metres for the smaller animal and 10–12 metres for the larger adult. Those are estimates, not direct measurements, and they make clear that “baby” should not be taken to mean a tiny hatchling. The discussion also considers uncertainty in assigning bite marks to a particular animal.

Did it hunt or scavenge?
The study favors scavenging: the marks’ placement and morphology, together with the lack of healing, are consistent with feeding after the larger animal had died. That interpretation is different from evidence of a kill. BDM 124 does not show when or how the larger animal died, nor does it identify who killed it. The authors’ reading is that the smaller tyrannosaurid ate from a carcass, not that it brought down the larger animal.
Does this prove cannibalism?
Not conclusively. Cannibalism means an animal consumed a member of its own species. The researchers’ interpretation allows that the feeder and the larger animal were conspecifics, but it also allows that they were closely related tyrannosaurids of different taxa. The feeding inference is stronger than the exact species identification, so the careful description is possible cannibalistic scavenging—or scavenging on a larger tyrannosaurid relative.

The attribution problem is not unique to this fossil. The 2026 Journal of Paleontology discussion describes tooth marks on an Albertosaurus specimen, TMP 2022.007.0040, whose maker cannot be identified with certainty. If the marks were made by Albertosaurus, that would be cannibalism; other possible makers remain under consideration. A pattern can support feeding while leaving the biter’s identity unresolved.

How can scientists tell a bite from another mark?
Researchers examine the marks’ form, dimensions and spacing, then compare those features with known tooth patterns. In the BDM 124 study, 3D scanning and morphometric analysis helped characterize the traces and assess whether they fit a small tyrannosaurid. Placement and the absence of healing also informed the interpretation that the marks were made during feeding after death rather than during a survived injury. These methods support an interpretation; they do not turn a bite-marked bone into a record of the entire event.

How this fits earlier tyrannosaur feeding evidence
Other studies provide context but concern different fossils, not BDM 124. A 2010 PLOS ONE study described tooth marks on four Tyrannosaurus specimens and attributed them to other Tyrannosaurus, interpreting the traces as likely opportunistic scavenging. It considered whether smaller marks could have come from juveniles or subadults, while also discussing the possibility that they came from smaller teeth farther back in the jaws of a large animal. The study is earlier evidence of feeding traces, not proof about the animal that marked BDM 124.
A 2019 study compared marks on a vertebra with tooth dimensions and spacing across Tyrannosaurus growth stages, attributing those traces to a juvenile T. rex. It used the specimen known as Jane, whose age had been estimated histologically at about 11–12 years, as a comparison. That figure belongs to Jane, not to the BDM 124 animal. The 2019 study adds context for juvenile feeding traces without resolving BDM 124’s age or species.
