Error tracking, uptime monitoring, and cron heartbeat monitoring observe three different things: errors reported by running code, responses from a reachable endpoint, and check-ins from scheduled work. A storefront can respond normally while a catalog import or inventory sync has stopped. For critical background tasks, use completion signals alongside endpoint and application monitoring—and treat a heartbeat as evidence of a check-in, not proof that the business result is correct.
What each monitoring signal tells you
| Signal | What starts the check | What it can establish | What it cannot establish by itself | Storefront example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Error tracking | Instrumented application code reports an exception or error. | A captured failure occurred, along with whatever debugging context the application sends. | That a scheduled task ran: a job that never starts may emit no exception. | An exception in an application API or checkout extension. |
| Uptime monitoring | An external service probes a reachable HTTP endpoint. | The endpoint responded according to the configured check. | That separate background work completed or that its output is correct. | A public storefront or API endpoint responds to a probe. |
| Cron heartbeat monitoring | A scheduled task sends a request to its unique monitor URL. | The task sent a check-in within the configured schedule window. | That the job processed the right data or achieved the intended business outcome. | A catalog import, fulfillment export, or inventory sync checks in. |
These signals are complementary, not competing substitutes. An uptime monitor actively probes an endpoint; a heartbeat monitor waits for the monitored task to contact it. Error tracking depends on application code reporting an error. Better Stack describes heartbeat monitors as expecting regular requests to a unique URL; UptimeRobot explains the reverse-check-in model, and Cronitor distinguishes passive heartbeat checks from active endpoint probes.
Does a working storefront mean its background jobs are working?
No. A public page can return a normal response even if an independent scheduled task is no longer running. Storefront availability checks answer whether the endpoint responds; they do not show that imports, exports, or queue processing finished.

Shopify’s Hydrogen production checklist recommends monitoring storefront health with checks such as uptime, log error counts, or a site performance score, and setting alerts for critical events and metrics. For a Hydrogen storefront, that recommendation supports layering endpoint checks and application error visibility with completion signals for high-impact scheduled workflows. The specific jobs to monitor depend on how a store is built; Shopify’s checklist does not require the examples here or a particular monitoring tool.

How to tell if a cron job stopped running
Configure a heartbeat monitor with an expected check-in frequency and an appropriate grace period. The scheduled task sends a request to its unique monitor URL when it completes. If the expected request does not arrive within the schedule window and grace period, the monitor can alert. That alert establishes a missed check-in; it does not diagnose whether the cause was a scheduler outage, a task failure, a network problem, or another issue.
- Choose a meaningful completion point. Send the success check-in only after the task’s important work is complete and its required success criteria have passed. A check-in at job start can make a task that later fails look healthy.
- Set the expected cadence and grace period. Allow for the actual schedule and ordinary delays, then alert when a check-in is overdue. The right values depend on the task’s schedule and operational tolerance; no universal interval is established here.
- Report failures explicitly where supported. Better Stack documents a
/failendpoint and an example that submits output and an exit code. Use failure reporting to distinguish an observed task failure from a missing check-in. - Keep diagnostic context. Retain task identifiers and logs so responders can connect an alert to the specific run and investigate what happened. A ping alone is a narrow signal.
Heartbeat monitoring relies on the task making an outbound request, so it can reveal that a scheduled check-in did not arrive but cannot, by itself, explain why. Better Stack’s heartbeat documentation describes expected-frequency and grace-period alerts as well as explicit failure reporting.

What a heartbeat does—and does not—prove
A successful heartbeat proves that a request reached the monitor. It does not automatically prove that a catalog contains the expected items, an inventory update was applied, an export reached its destination, or a downstream system processed the result. If the task can check meaningful success conditions, make those conditions part of the decision to report success. For stronger business assurance, validate the result separately—for example, by checking that expected records or downstream acknowledgments are present.
This distinction matters when a job completes its process but produces incomplete or stale data. A timely check-in is evidence of activity; correctness and downstream impact require evidence suited to those outcomes.

Shopify-specific monitoring considerations
Checkout UI extensions
Shopify’s Checkout UI extensions documentation describes listeners for unhandled promise rejections and other errors. It notes that third-party error reporting may need extra configuration because extensions run in a Web Worker, and that network access must be requested to transmit errors to a third party. Shopify includes a Sentry example. This guidance concerns checkout UI extensions; it should not be generalized to every Shopify storefront implementation.
Webhook delivery
Storefront uptime does not establish that integrations are processing events. Shopify’s webhook troubleshooting documentation says failed deliveries are retried and persistent failure can lead to a webhook subscription being removed. Delivery metrics and logs can help investigate; recovery may require importing data missed during an outage.

App monitoring dashboards
Shopify’s Dev Dashboard monitoring documentation describes operations charts and logs for app activity. An empty timeline is not proof that nothing happened: some browser-to-backend requests are not represented there. A dashboard only shows activity within its visibility, so use evidence from the layer where the work occurs.

- Monitor the public experience: use an external uptime check for the storefront or API endpoint customers and integrations rely on.
- Capture application failures: instrument relevant code so developers can investigate exceptions it reports.
- Watch critical scheduled work: add heartbeat check-ins to jobs that could stop or fail silently, placing success check-ins after meaningful work and validation.
- Make alerts actionable: assess whether the monitor supports missed-run and timeout behavior, configurable grace periods, explicit failure or exit-code reporting, useful context, and integrations that fit your response process.
- Account for setup constraints: endpoint probes are initiated externally, while heartbeats require the task to make an outbound request. Decide which failure modes each signal can expose in your environment.
Shopify’s Hydrogen production checklist recommends monitoring storefront health, but the combination of checks should match the architecture and consequences of failure. No single signal covers endpoint availability, code errors, scheduled execution, and business correctness at once.
