Expansions, Adventures, and Journeys are different ways Hearthstone delivers both cards and story. An expansion is a large card-set release that defines a season’s setting, characters, and mechanics. A historical Adventure is a focused, encounter-based solo experience built around a contained theme. Journey is the newer campaign layer in the Hearthstone Journal, combining weekly story chapters with quests, rewards, events, and seasonal activities.
The practical distinction is just as important as the terminology: Adventures belong mainly to Hearthstone’s earlier release model and remain historical or Wild-era content, while expansions and Journey campaigns are how current seasons connect ongoing narrative with the live card game. This guide explains the release history, the way stories cross expansion boundaries, and the best way to approach the current campaign structure.
Expansions, Adventures, and Journey at a glance
Hearthstone uses several content formats, and the word “story” does not mean the same thing in each one. Compare them on three axes: the form of the content, the size of its narrative, and how it is made available.

There is overlap in the storytelling goal. Blizzard described Adventures as content that “paint colorful and thematic stories about the Hearthstone universe.” Expansions can now carry that same kind of storytelling while also supplying the cards used in Standard or Wild play. Journey packages the narrative and the surrounding activities into one continuing campaign.

What an expansion actually does
A card ecosystem, not just a chapter
An expansion is the broadest of the three formats. Its defining product is a large card set, accompanied by a setting, cast of characters, visual identity, and mechanics that shape decks for the season. Blizzard’s 2017 description set the expected size at approximately 130 cards per expansion. That number is a planning benchmark from that announcement, not a guarantee that every later set has exactly the same count.
Because an expansion changes the card pool, its story is designed to coexist with competitive and collection systems. You may encounter the setting through card art, flavor text, launch events, quests, or solo activities rather than through one linear campaign screen. The narrative can therefore be wider than any single mission.
Expansion stories can form a larger arc
Modern Hearthstone does not require every expansion to resolve its story independently. Blizzard’s Across the Timeways and CATACLYSM pages show how a later set can continue the plot and consequences of an earlier one.
Across the Timeways, released November 4, 2025, follows Chromie and the Heroes of Time as they confront Murozond across multiple timelines. CATACLYSM, launched March 17, 2026, follows that thread into an alternate-timeline invasion led by Deathwing. To understand the second set’s premise, the first set supplies useful context; the two are best treated as connected chapters in a season-spanning arc rather than unrelated themes.
Why an expansion may feel less linear
Collectible cards are not arranged like a novel. A character can appear in a card before the game provides a complete explanation, and a mechanic may communicate a setting more strongly than a cutscene does. If you want the story, read the expansion’s official announcement and related Journal material alongside the cards. If you want the gameplay, you can enter the set without completing every narrative beat. The format supports both approaches.
What an Adventure is—and what it is not
The historical release category
In Hearthstone’s original content model, Adventures were a distinct release type placed between or alongside expansions. Blizzard’s official chronology records Adventure releases in June 2014, April 2015, November 2015, and August 2016, with expansions interleaved between them.
That chronology matters because “Adventure” can refer either to a named historical product category or, more generally, to focused solo lore content. The historical category describes how Blizzard packaged the release. The broader description describes how the player experiences it: a sequence of encounters built around a concentrated premise instead of a full card ecosystem.

Encounter-based, concentrated storytelling
An Adventure normally gives the story a tighter shape than an expansion. Progress is organized around encounters or stages, so the player has a clearer beginning, middle, and end. The format is well suited to a villain’s lair, a dangerous expedition, or another self-contained episode in the Hearthstone universe.
That focus does not make an Adventure insignificant. A short solo chapter can introduce characters or themes that later appear in cards and expansions. It simply has a different center of gravity: the encounter sequence is the main experience, while the card set is not necessarily the primary product.
Why older Adventures should not be assumed to work like Journey
Journey is not a renamed version of the old Adventure schedule. Adventures were released as discrete historical products. Journey is a living campaign layer in the Journal, designed to unfold during an active expansion and to connect story, quests, rewards, events, and seasonal experiences. The interface and timing are different, even though both formats use solo-friendly storytelling.
How Hearthstone’s release model changed
2014–2016: Adventures alongside expansions
The official Card Sets chronology shows a mixed cadence during the early years. An Adventure appears in June 2014, another in April 2015, another in November 2015, and another in August 2016. Expansions were released between those entries. This was a deliberate alternation of large card releases and more concentrated solo content.

The chronology identifies the release windows, but it does not by itself provide a complete encounter-by-encounter archive or a universal access method for every older product.
2017 onward: expansion-led seasons
In A Year of Mammoth Proportions!, Blizzard explained that the previous model alternated Expansions and Adventures, then announced a plan for three approximately 130-card expansions per year. The same announcement said the thematic storytelling associated with Adventures could be brought into expansion stories.
This change did not eliminate narrative. It moved more of the narrative work into the expansion cycle. Instead of waiting for a separate Adventure release to deliver a setting or plot, a season could introduce its characters and conflicts through the card set and related activities. That is why later Hearthstone stories can span several expansions without each one being a standalone Adventure.

The current connected-story example: 2025–2026
Across the Timeways — November 4, 2025
This expansion establishes a time-spanning conflict. Chromie and the Heroes of Time face Murozond across timelines, making continuity itself part of the premise. The setting gives later content a narrative launch point rather than a one-off theme.

CATACLYSM continues the arc with an alternate-timeline invasion by Deathwing. Its relationship to Across the Timeways is the clearest modern example of an expansion story carrying forward unresolved consequences. If you are following the plot, read or play the Across the Timeways material first, then move to CATACLYSM.
Escape from Violet Hold — July 7, 2026
This release changes the immediate premise to an outlaw prison break in Dalaran. The shift shows that connected seasonal storytelling does not require every release to keep the same location or antagonist. A new setting can begin its own focused episode while still belonging to the broader 2026 content year.
The Year of the Scarab calendar
The official Card Sets page lists 2026 as the Year of the Scarab and shows expansion slots in March, July, and October. It marks the year for both Standard and Wild. The slot calendar explains when the major seasonal card releases are expected; it does not mean every story beat arrives on the same day as an expansion launch.
How Journey works in the 2026 Journal
A campaign layer rather than a single set
Journey is the current way Hearthstone groups narrative and seasonal activity. Blizzard defines it as a living campaign in the Hearthstone Journal that brings together story, Journey Quests, rewards, events, and seasonal experiences into one campaign unfolding throughout an expansion.

The distinction is practical. An expansion supplies the card environment. Journey supplies a timed path through that environment. You may return to the Journal to find a new story chapter, a quest objective, an event, or a reward connected to the same seasonal campaign.
The Road to Ny’alotha
The first announced Journey chapter, The Road to Ny’alotha, begins October 13, 2026. It unfolds in seven weekly parts. Completing each part awards one Reign of the Black Empire Pack, for a total of one pack per completed part across the seven-part schedule.

Because the chapters are weekly, this is not a campaign that must be completed in one sitting. The intended rhythm is to return as each part becomes available, complete its chapter and associated Journey objectives, and claim the reward. The schedule also means that a player joining after launch should check the Journal for which parts are currently open rather than assuming that every chapter is available immediately.
What Journey adds to the player’s routine
- Story chapters: the narrative progression that gives the season a continuing plot.
- Journey Quests: objectives tied to participation in the campaign.
- Rewards: items connected to completing campaign progress, including the announced Reign of the Black Empire Packs.
- Events and seasonal experiences: time-limited activities that sit alongside the chapter progression.
Journey therefore sits between a traditional solo Adventure and a normal expansion. It keeps the episodic, guided feeling of a campaign while remaining integrated with the live card-game season.
What order should you play Hearthstone’s story content?
For the 2025–2026 connected arc
- Start with Across the Timeways and its Chromie, Heroes of Time, and Murozond setup.
- Continue with CATACLYSM, which advances the conflict through Deathwing’s alternate-timeline invasion.
- Move to Escape from Violet Hold for the Dalaran prison-break premise.
- Follow the active Journey campaign in the Journal, beginning with The Road to Ny’alotha from October 13, 2026, and complete its weekly parts as they unlock.
This order follows the dated releases and the explicit continuity between the first two expansions. The later prison-break setting is a new immediate premise, so it can be approached after the earlier arc without requiring it to be treated as the same kind of chapter.
For the historical Adventure era
- Use the official Card Sets chronology as your date order.
- Place the June 2014 Adventure first among the listed Adventure entries.
- Continue through the April 2015, November 2015, and August 2016 Adventure releases, keeping the intervening expansions in their original release positions.
- Check the current client and official availability information for each specific product before planning a purchase or collection goal.
A complete encounter-by-encounter play order for every historical Adventure is not established by the chronology alone. It is safer to distinguish the verified release sequence from assumptions about how every old mission can be accessed today.
If you only want the current story
Start with the current expansion’s official story material and open the Hearthstone Journal. Journey is designed to be the active delivery layer, so the Journal is the place to find the currently available chapter, Journey Quests, events, and rewards. You do not need to complete every historical Adventure to understand the current campaign’s immediate objectives.

Availability, Standard, and Wild considerations
Story format and competitive format are separate questions. An older Adventure may be historically important without being part of the current Standard card pool. Conversely, an older expansion’s cards can remain relevant in Wild even after leaving Standard.

Journey is tied to the active season, so its chapters and rewards follow a live schedule. That makes it different from a permanently fixed historical Adventure: the Journal may present content according to the current week and expansion state.
Common points of confusion
“Is every expansion a story campaign?”
No. An expansion is first a card-set release. It can establish a setting and advance a plot, but its cards, mechanics, and supporting activities are not automatically a linear solo campaign. Journey is the format that explicitly organizes ongoing story and seasonal tasks as a campaign.
“Are Adventures and Journey interchangeable names?”
No. Adventures are the historical release category associated with the 2014–2016 model and with focused encounter content. Journey is the 2026 Journal framework for a living, scheduled campaign. They share a solo-story sensibility but differ in packaging, timing, and integration with the current season.

“Do I have to play every old Adventure before a new expansion?”
No universal prerequisite is established by the chronology. The dated sequence is useful for historical context, while the current connected arc can be followed through its relevant expansion material and Journey chapters.
“Why can a later expansion feel like a sequel?”
Because Hearthstone’s expansion-led model allows stories to continue across releases. The transition from Across the Timeways to CATACLYSM is an explicit example: the later expansion takes the earlier time-spanning conflict and advances it through a Deathwing-led alternate-timeline invasion.
Bottom line for planning your Hearthstone story journey
Use “expansion” for the large card ecosystem, “Adventure” for the historical encounter-focused release type, and “Journey” for the current Journal campaign framework. Follow older content by the verified release chronology, follow connected modern stories in expansion order, and use the Journal for the active weekly campaign. In 2026, that means understanding the Across the Timeways to CATACLYSM connection, treating Escape from Violet Hold as the next dated setting shift, and checking Journey for the seven-part The Road to Ny’alotha campaign.
