The right AI data loss prevention (DLP) tool is the one that covers your actual data paths and can enforce policy before sensitive information leaves them. Start by mapping repositories, endpoints, browsers, SaaS applications, network traffic, APIs and AI services. Then verify, channel by channel, what each candidate can discover, inspect, detect and enforce. A product marketed as AI DLP may protect only a browser on managed Windows devices, only cloud applications, only endpoint peripherals, or only an API that your developers integrate.
Use the framework below to build a requirements matrix, test real AI workflows and calculate the complete cost of deployment. The product examples are evidence-backed categories for evaluation, not an independently tested ranking or a claim that one vendor is best for every organization.
What an AI DLP tool actually protects
Traditional DLP identifies sensitive information and applies rules when data is stored, used or transferred. AI DLP applies the same discipline to workflows involving generative-AI websites, copilots, internal model applications, model APIs and the files or text users submit to them. The difficult part is not the label; it is the control path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A control can operate in several places:
- Repositories at rest: Microsoft 365 sites, cloud storage, SaaS records, databases, file shares and endpoint files.
- Endpoints in use: Copy and paste, screen capture, printing, removable media, Bluetooth, local applications and browser sessions.
- Network traffic in motion: Web uploads, downloads, proxy traffic and API requests.
- Integrated applications: An internal application can send prompts or documents to a model through an API that the DLP service scans.
- Sharing and collaboration: Public links, external recipients, guest access and synchronization to unmanaged devices.
Discovery and enforcement are separate capabilities. A scanner may find exposed credentials in a repository but have no way to stop a user from pasting them into an AI prompt. Conversely, an endpoint agent may block a browser upload while having no visibility into data already stored in a SaaS application. Your selection must specify both functions for every route that matters.

Define your scope before comparing products
Inventory sensitive data and locations
List the information your policies must protect and where it exists. Typical categories include personal data, payment information, health records, source code, credentials, customer contracts, unreleased financial results, legal material and proprietary model prompts. Record the repositories and owners for each category rather than creating one generic “sensitive data” rule.
Microsoft documentation describes DLP across Microsoft 365 services and endpoints, while other products document cloud, SaaS or endpoint-specific coverage. Those statements do not establish coverage for every repository in your environment. Mark each location as required, optional or out of scope, and ask the supplier to demonstrate the connector or agent that provides the claimed visibility.
Map how data moves
Document the actions users and services take:
- Typing or pasting text into a public or enterprise AI chat.
- Uploading a document, image, source-code archive or spreadsheet.
- Sending prompts and attachments through an internal application that calls a model API.
- Downloading generated content to a managed or unmanaged endpoint.
- Copying content to removable storage, a printer, Bluetooth device or network share.
- Creating a sharing link or inviting an external collaborator.
- Moving data between cloud services through automation or synchronization.
For each movement, identify the identity, device state, application, destination and point at which a decision can still prevent disclosure. A control that evaluates an event after an API request has completed may be useful for investigation, but it is not equivalent to pre-transfer blocking.

Require a capability entry for every data path. Use the following sequence when questioning a supplier:
- Discover: Can the service locate and classify data at rest in the required repository or endpoint?
- Inspect: Can it read the content while it is in use or in transit, such as a browser upload or API payload?
- Detect: Which information types, regular expressions, classifiers, labels, fingerprints and contextual signals can trigger a policy?
- Decide: Can rules account for user, device trust, application, destination, file type, sensitivity label and business justification?
- Enforce: Is the response an alert, user coaching, warning, block, quarantine, access restriction or remediation? At what point does it occur?
- Prove: What event, content evidence and administrator action are logged for investigations and audits?
Ask whether each function is native, an optional license, dependent on an endpoint agent or browser extension, or dependent on an application or API integration. A feature that appears in a product family may require a different SKU, a particular client version or a separate service.
Is there any DLP designed specifically for AI applications?
Some controls are designed around AI interaction, but no single behavior should be assumed across every AI application. Microsoft documents warning or blocking when sensitive information is shared with third-party generative-AI sites through a browser on onboarded Windows computers. Microsoft also documents app-specific AI interaction management for Entra-registered applications that integrate with Purview APIs; the described behavior requires pay-as-you-go billing. These examples establish particular integration paths, not universal protection for every model, browser or device.
Ask candidates to demonstrate the exact applications your staff use. A browser control may see a prompt and file upload, while an internal application may require an API integration to expose the request body. A network control may see a destination but not understand the semantic sensitivity of encrypted content. Record these distinctions instead of accepting a general “AI protection” statement.

Build a buyer’s comparison matrix
Populate one row for each required channel and one column for each control. The questions below prevent marketing terms from hiding gaps.
| Axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Data locations | Which repositories, SaaS applications, cloud platforms, endpoints and AI services are supported today, in your region and edition? |
| AI control path | Does the product inspect browser prompts, uploads, API traffic, integrated AI applications, downloads or only a subset? |
| Data state | Can it discover data at rest, monitor data in use and inspect data in motion? |
| Detection | Which sensitive-information types, classifiers, labels, fingerprints and contextual signals are available? Can you create custom detectors? |
| Enforcement | Can it alert, coach, warn, block, quarantine, restrict access or remediate on the relevant path? |
| Deployment | Are agents, browser extensions, network routing, mobile-device management, SaaS permissions or app APIs required? |
| Licensing | Which exact SKU or add-on enables each control? Is usage metered by users, endpoints, events, scans or API volume? |
| Operations | How are exceptions, false positives, investigations, audit evidence and policy tuning handled? |
| Lifecycle | Are there announced deprecations, migrations or shutdown dates that affect a new deployment? |
Require a written support-and-action matrix during procurement. If a cell is not documented, mark it as not stated and make the supplier demonstrate it in the pilot.
Product categories worth evaluating
Microsoft Purview DLP and DSPM
Microsoft describes DLP across Microsoft 365 services and endpoints. Its published browser scenario can warn or block certain sensitive data shared with third-party generative-AI sites on onboarded Windows computers. Purview DSPM brings together insights from DLP, Insider Risk Management, information protection and investigations.
Confirm the entitlement for every required feature. Microsoft’s app-specific AI interaction guidance for Entra-registered applications requires pay-as-you-go billing and integration with Purview APIs for the described behavior. Verify whether your AI application, device platform and browser route match the documented scenario; do not infer identical enforcement for unmanaged devices or unrelated applications.
Netskope DLP and Endpoint DLP
Netskope documents DLP for cloud services and endpoint controls covering removable devices, printers, Bluetooth and network shares. Its documentation identifies Endpoint DLP as an optional add-on to the client and lists platform and client prerequisites. Request a supported-application and action matrix for your operating systems, browsers and collaboration services. Check whether the control is delivered through the client, a cloud connector, a proxy path or another component, and test behavior when traffic bypasses the expected route.
Palo Alto Networks Enterprise DLP Endpoint DLP
Documentation for Enterprise DLP Endpoint DLP covers peripheral-device controls and scanning sensitive data at rest on managed Windows and macOS endpoints. The documented setup requires an Endpoint DLP license, Prisma Agent and a supported Prisma Access or next-generation firewall configuration. Production Prisma Agent deployment requires mobile-device management. This category may fit organizations that already operate the relevant Prisma environment; otherwise, include the additional architecture and operational work in the comparison.
Nightfall
Nightfall’s developer references describe APIs for querying SaaS-application violations and scanning arbitrary text with configured detectors, including custom integrations. The company also markets broader endpoint, SaaS and AI-application protection. Validate the exact modules, supported connectors, detector behavior and enforcement path in a technical evaluation. An API that returns a violation is not automatically a control that blocks the original transaction, so test timing and response options.

Google Cloud Security Command Center DSPM
Google Cloud describes Security Command Center DSPM as a data-centric view of Google Cloud security. Its overview also states that Data Security Posture Management will be shut down on February 1, 2027. Treat that lifecycle notice as material: request Google’s transition guidance, identify replacement capabilities and calculate migration effort before including the service in a new design.

Test the AI workflows your users really follow
A proof of concept should use representative data and approved test accounts, not a feature checklist. Create test cases for both permitted and prohibited activity.
- Prepare labeled samples: Use synthetic records or approved redacted data representing credentials, personal data, source code, contracts and ordinary business text. Record the expected classification for each sample.
- Test prompt entry: Paste each sample into every approved and unapproved AI site. Test a full prompt, a fragment, a translated version and text split across fields if those behaviors are realistic.
- Test files: Upload documents, images and archives through the browser and through internal applications. Include files with labels, fingerprints and custom detector matches.
- Vary device state: Repeat on managed Windows, managed macOS, unmanaged personal devices and virtual or remote sessions where policy permits. Record which agent, extension or network route was active.
- Test API paths: Send the same samples through internal applications that call a model. Determine whether the DLP service sees the request before transmission, receives a copy asynchronously or sees only an application event.
- Exercise responses: Verify alert, coaching, warning, block, quarantine and exception flows. Test business justification, manager approval, time-limited exemptions and an administrator override.
- Check evidence: Confirm that logs contain user, device, application, destination, matched detector, policy version, action and relevant content evidence without creating a new exposure.
Measure false positives and false negatives with a fixed test set. A product that blocks everything may be unusable; one that misses small but critical secrets may create unacceptable risk. Have security, privacy, legal, IT operations and the application owner sign off on the acceptance criteria.
Deployment and licensing questions
Architecture can determine feasibility before detection quality does. Ask for prerequisites in writing:
- Supported Windows and macOS versions, browser versions and server or mobile coverage.
- Endpoint agents, browser extensions, client health requirements and administrator privileges.
- Mobile-device-management enrollment for production endpoint deployment.
- Proxy, secure-web-gateway or network-routing changes, including behavior when a user is off-network.
- SaaS connector permissions, cloud-account roles and data-retention settings.
- API authentication, payload limits, latency and rate limits for integrated AI applications.
- Dependencies on a broader platform subscription, an optional endpoint add-on or usage-based billing.
Netskope identifies Endpoint DLP as an optional client add-on. Palo Alto’s documented endpoint path requires a license, Prisma Agent and supported Prisma Access or firewall configuration. Microsoft entitlements vary by plan and feature. Treat these as architecture and budget inputs, not implementation details to resolve after purchase.

Roll out controls without disrupting work
Start in audit mode
Deploy discovery and monitoring first. Capture which rules match, which applications generate events, which users need legitimate exceptions and which data types are misclassified. Keep the test population broad enough to expose different devices and workflows but small enough for daily review.
Tune detectors and policy logic
Use labels, exact-data matching, fingerprints and contextual conditions where available. Exclude known test data and low-risk destinations. Separate policies for high-confidence secrets, regulated records and lower-confidence business content so that each can have an appropriate response.
Introduce coaching and warnings
Explain why a prompt, upload or transfer is restricted and provide a safe alternative, such as an approved internal AI application or a redaction procedure. Measure override reasons and update guidance before moving to hard blocks.
Block narrowly, then expand
Begin with high-confidence matches and the highest-impact destinations. Keep a documented emergency break-glass process, require an expiry for exceptions and review policy changes. Expand coverage only after alert volume, false-positive rate and response times are acceptable to the operations team.
Common selection mistakes and their fixes
Choosing by the phrase “AI DLP”
Failure: Assuming a product protects every model, browser, endpoint and API. Fix: Demand a channel-by-channel demonstration and mark unsupported paths explicitly.
Confusing scanning with prevention
Failure: Treating a repository scan or post-event alert as proof that a prompt upload can be stopped. Fix: Test the control point and timestamp; record whether the action is blocked before transmission or investigated afterward.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring unmanaged devices
Failure: Designing policy around managed endpoints while users access AI services from personal devices. Fix: Decide whether unmanaged access is blocked, limited to approved applications, handled through a remote workspace or accepted as an explicit risk.

Underestimating exceptions
Failure: Using permanent allowlists that become invisible bypasses. Fix: Require justification, owner approval, scope limits, expiration and review for every exception.
Overlooking lifecycle risk
Failure: Building a new program around a service with a published shutdown date. Fix: Obtain a transition plan and migration estimate before signing, and store policies in a portable format where possible.
Governance and success measures
Assign ownership for data classification, policy authoring, endpoint health, application integrations, incident response and privacy review. Define who can approve an exception and who can release quarantined content. Keep an inventory of connectors, agents, API integrations, policy versions and license dependencies.

Track measures that reflect risk reduction and operational quality:
- Coverage of required repositories, endpoints, AI applications and transfer paths.
- Percentage of sensitive-data events detected before transmission.
- Confirmed policy violations, false positives and user overrides by rule.
- Mean time to investigate and contain an incident.
- Endpoint and connector health, including unenrolled or bypassing devices.
- Age and ownership of exceptions, with expired exceptions closed automatically.
- Cost per protected user, endpoint or inspected transaction within the agreed scope.
Review these measures whenever an AI application, browser, endpoint platform or data repository changes. AI services evolve quickly, so a control that worked for a web form may not cover a new desktop client or API integration without a new test.
Make the final decision
Select the candidate that satisfies the highest-risk paths with enforceable controls, acceptable deployment effort and a lifecycle you can support. A smaller product with reliable pre-transfer blocking on your real AI workflows can be a better fit than a broad platform whose required integrations, licenses or agents are unavailable in your environment.
Before signing, obtain a dated feature and entitlement statement, complete the workflow pilot, document residual gaps and agree on exit and migration terms. Recheck volatile capabilities, pricing and lifecycle notices during procurement; the 2026 documentation snapshot includes a February 1, 2027 shutdown notice for Google Cloud’s Data Security Posture Management service and should not be treated as a permanent roadmap.
